Mentor: The Kid & The CEO by Tom Pace (with Walter Jenkins) When I first read the requirements for this book review assignment, I wasn’t currently reading a book. I knew I wanted to do it on a Nicholas Sparks books as those are easy reads for myself and I knew a lot of them had to do with family issues. I went to check out a few options at the library when I stumbled across this book, “The Mentor”. I started reading and I was instantly hooked! • Characters: a. Malcom – CEO and the Mentor throughout the book. i. This character is based off of Tom (the author’s) life. ii. Malcom started out with a troubled passed. He started his now million dollar company with just 62.53. iii. He visits the Jail every Monday to talk to the inmates. It …show more content…

Malcom gave him a shovel to start his digging business, but now Gary owns his own equipment and employs 6 workers. iii. After Tony is released, Malcom suggest that Tony lives with him until Tony is able to find a stable home. A few days after getting out, Gary also offers Tony a job. • Setting: Oklahoma City, OK – The county jail; the trail around the lighthouse and Gary’s house. • Plot: Tony is a young adult who has no direction or hope for this future. That is until he meets Malcom, a businessman who has faced similar challenges. Malcom comes to the county jail on Monday’s and soon builds a connection with Tony. Malcom shares his knowledge and experience with Tony and he soon becomes successful himself. This book shows what a role of a mentor has on someone’s life. It is a simple story about an unlikely pair of friends who learn the meaning of trust to overcome their failures and turn those failures into
“Wes was so confused. He loved and respected his brother. Tony was the closest thing Wes had to a role model. But the more he tried to be like his brother, the more Tony pushed back.” (72) Wes then got his girlfriend pregnant 4 times and dropped out of school to help out with her. With multiple arrests for shooting someone and drug dealing. Tony his "so called role model" helped Wes rob a jewelry store and they were convicted for murdering Sergeant Prothero along the way. Tony's motives were right but he never really got across to Wes with leading him in the right direction. Tony tried to push Wes away from the drug game but Wes was to drawn to it.
I would recommend this book to people who love realistic stories. Personally for me it is hard to find books that interest me and this one felt like if I was watching someone else's life while I read it. It has so many interesting points. When you think something might happen
Friday April 24th J.P. Walker, Preacher Lee, Crip Reyer, L.C. Davis got into Reyer’s Oldsmobile and took off on a mission to kill Mark Charles Parker. Three other cars of men followed, they went to the courthouse/jail in Poplarville and they could not get in. So they went to Jewel Alford’s House (the jail keeper) to get the keys to the jail. Alford went with the four men to the courthouse.
Conclusively, instead of having a story that delves into a mournful prose about how horrid the author’s life was, this book was surprisingly light-hearted. Although there were some saddening parts in the memoir, Jeannette has achieved a balance of pity, warmth, and light humor that can make you both admire yet cringe in anger at the way the Walls parents raised their children. The way Jeannette had approached and described her difficult childhood was a unique one for she did not make the readers feel pity for only her and her siblings, but sometimes for their parents as well. Overall, I highly recommend this book to read because it does give the reader a very descriptive look into the childhood of the author, but in such a unique way that the ending will show you that in some cases, no matter what happens in a family, they will always be together.
In Chapter 1 the story setting is LA County Court, Juvenile Division. Beckstrand is talking to the author and tell him that the first thing to learn about the system in Inglewood is that nothing works. A case is beginning and the study showing that juvenile detention doesn't work is in question. In many cases it is one really doesn't who wins, or if anyone get will. This part of LA is a poverty based environment community that's really sees the wealthy. The city is divided by race and and economic status.
He takes a necklace for his Gina, who is now grown into a beautiful young women and one thousand dollars’ cash for his mother. His sister is very excited to see him, but his mother not so much. His mother knows how he is making his money and is disgusted. She refuses the money he tries to give her and throws him out. This part of the movie shows a small glimpse into Tony’s past. A conversation between him and his sister, reveals that he was in the army with the communists and that is father abandoned them. It shows his deep love and protection for his sister as well as hers for him. He is able to sneak the money to her. Manny makes small comment about how beautiful Tony’s sister has become and Tony’s rage surfaces, instructed Manny to keep his mouth shut and to stay away from his
I can relate this book to a very good friend of mine that got caught up in a bad situation. I’ll use the name “Bob”. We live in the small town of Cape May, NJ and everyone knows everyone. Not always the best situation for people like Bob. He and I became friends before any of these awful things started to happen. Bob got caught up in the wrong crowd one summer and begandealing cocaine. At the time I was un- aware of this. I began to notice a change in him around the middle of the summer, I asked him if there was anything wrong or if I could do anything for him. Bob wouldn’t tell me what was going on, he said, “I don’t want to hurt you.”
One of the possible research topics I plan to undertake involves analyzing the impact that mentoring can have on the graduation success rate of African American males, particularly when the mentor is a Black male and the relationship takes place in the south. In my opinion, these relationships can have a profound impact on a student’s ability to persist towards graduating from college. Though my research, I want to hear the stories of Black males who have benefited from successful mentoring relationships with other Black men. I believe that establishing a strong mentoring relationship with Black males at a young age can greatly improve their chance of academic success. Furthermore, I believe that mentoring is a strong early intervention mechanism to prevent Black males from dropping out of high school and deterring them from pursuing degrees in higher education. At the same time, I would like my research interest to focus on African American males in the south, but I would like my scope to focus on mentoring relationships between black men; both structured and unstructured.

Immediately in the first few pages, Pattyn, the narrator, openly asks disturbing questions to the reader such as, “Do you ever dangle your toes over the precipice, dare the cliff to crumble” (Hopkins 2). These first impressions of the protagonist allow the reader to infer that Pattyn has a damaged mentality. The reader is continuously presented with harsh narrations of her being constantly disciplined by her drunken father to care for her siblings by playing a motherly role. Pattyn’s life is continuously crushed by reality and burdened by her strict household. It is not until later in the novel- when Pattyn is forced to live with her Aunt J for the summer as a punishment- that she begins to discover happiness and self worth. She illustrates that, “Ever since [she] had been with Aunt J, [she] had learned things” (Hopkins 266). While with her Aunt, Pattyn was introduced to a whole new world of love and happiness; she has newfound relationships with her Aunt and a young boy named Ethan. For once, Pattyn feels wanted and valued. She goes from completely questioning her reason to live to having a genuine sense of self driven happiness. She was at an all time low in life and was able to find reason to live a fulfilling life. Hopkins, since the beginning of the novel, effortlessly captures the reader’s interest and presents them with an exceptional story centered on Pattyn’s overall character
...isted for the 2008 Booktrust Teenage Prize. It has also been long listed for the 2009 Manchester Book Award and nominated for the 2009 Carnegie Medal. In this book you see how families have to handle stuff like in Broken Soup that Rowan had to take care of her younger sister and of the house the only one she had was Stroma as a overall family. For me as I said in my introduction, Life is something hard to understand because you never know what will happen to you tomorrow or to your future, you will not know if someone or something negative or positive will appear from no were and will change your life, just what happened to Rowan. That what makes this book so interesting the fact that she was to life live separated from her mom, dad and brother the only one that she has is her sister so she meets and gets to know the truth to a secret that was occulted in her life.
What I like the best about this book was the portrayal of the characters. I felt like I was in the novel and experiencing whatever the characters were experiencing. The author spent a good part of the book building up the relationships between the characters. All the characters, from the good guys to the bad guys, were crafted into believable and well-developed characters. Nick Angriff came off as a rough, but likable character. His best friend, Norm Fleming, helped to build up Nick’s character by helping him with any problem that he faced.
First, Conley tells us how he wanted to change his life in college. He wanted someone who knew how to party, but ended up with Tony. Tony was a guy with great taste of music, really quiet, and had different beliefs than Mr. Conley. However, they got to know each other better and the author thinks it was a great experience.
After the carjacking, a repulsed Cameron kicks Anthony out of his car and says "You embarrass me. You embarrass yourself." After the incident Anthony steals a van full of illegal immigrants that he later buys because the chop shop was going to sell them off as slaves. He finds it in his heart to release them and gave them all the money he had, 40 dollars. In that moment he became a changed person after rescuing the immigrants that could have been victims of human trafficking. Cameron showed him that being black doesn’t mean he has to be a thug which happened to give Anthony the strength to make the right moral decision and save lives. Another character that greatly evolved is Officer John Ryan, a bigoted white police officer with the greatest racism out of all the characters. In the beginning he is shown physically molesting Christine Thayer, a black woman, during a traffic stop. His racial prejudices seem to stem from the negative impact that local affirmative action policies had on his father's business. As if that wasn’t enough, his father was diagnosed with a bladder infection despite prior useless treatments. His anger towards his father’s condition has manifested into prejudice, which he then reveals towards a HMO employee. His racist
Helping is the most important thing that everyone should learn to do. When Roger went out and helped Tony, it was the most beautiful thing that he did. The quote that shows what he did is “But it just would not work. Finally, I got up, paid for my meal, and I walked up to the van.” This quote shows how Roger helped Tony when Tony needed some help. Many people do not like to help other people because they were really hurt by what the they did to them. But, Roger showed that even though he got hurt be Tony he still helped him and didn’t leave him struggling. However, he was able to just walk by him and not help him, but he couldn’t because he’s not that kind of person that leaves people without help. Roger has the most important trait which is Forgiving.
