Videogames are at their very essence a game played through electronic means. Most systems involve a controller of some sort, a screen, and a system such as the Playstation, Xbox, or Wii. All of these systems besides the Wii require you to sit in one place for long periods of time in order for you to play. Sports by definition are an activity that requires some form of physical exertion and training in order to compete against others for entertainment. Most sports have some team aspect to them, and the players must constantly practice with each other in order to improve. In the gaming world teams compete through bracket systems like most other sports including football, baseball, and basketball. The teams consist of 6-12 people who sleep, eat, and breathe the games. Players spend 18+ hours a day practicing for their games and the time they spend while not playing they spend reviewing old game material, building strategy for competition, and other misc activities. These teams then compete in tournaments and move on through the ranks until they are the best team from their bracket competing against the other best team. Post game the teams all regroup and start all over again preparing for the next season. This process is identical to that which most sports …show more content…

Gaming is sitting in front of a screen playing games, just like the stereotypes suggest, so why is there even a debate? Luckily for esports there is a category of sports called mind sports. Mind sports are everything from chess to speed reading. Mind sports rely on quickened mind and motor skills in order to compete tasks of intelligence and strategy. Gaming is just that, strategizing with a team to outwit the other team and win.
