Video games have become a hot topic recently. There have been a lot of controversy over whether to play or not to play. The controversy is due to them being arguably more captivating than all other forms of entertainment. Video games narrate an epic tale like no other form of entertainment can. You can become immersed in video games, because of this they are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time.
Tom Bissell, whom is the author of the article Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter starts off his article uniquely by creating a theoretical situation in which he is telling his future children that he missed the 2008 presidential inauguration, because he was playing video games. He talks about Fall Out 3, Oblivion and other games he calls, open world games, which are games with no designated path with the possibilities being almost limitless. Bissell explains how attractive the graphics are along with how interested in the story you can become. He admits how much time he has spent playing and how irritated the games make him at times. Bissell doesn’t clarify anywhere that he believes video games are good or bad for anyone, he just shares his experience with video games for others to think about or relate to.

The breathtaking landscapes rival the real world as well as regular viewer entertainment, where the grass is not as green and, the water is not as clear. The entertaining stories rival real world experiences or even books. The stories are filled to the brim with adventure that are not experienced by everyone or can’t be experienced at all in reality. In the video game, you live another life with new possibilities, just as Bissell states “for a while I lived there and claimed it”. These games give the gamer a sense of accomplishment generating satisfaction that is not achieved in reality (352). Video games can become so intense that they affect you, making your mood better or worse. The author, who suffers from depression, says it was something “I could fill my days with other than my piranhic self-hatred. It was an extra life, I am grateful to have had it”, many others with depression most likely feel the same as he does. (Bissell, 352). No other form of entertainment can be considered another life, showing another world, including a whole other life, that is crystal clear, interactive and all is given without any effort, unlike reality. Video games are a complete waste of time.
They are like most forms of entertainment in which they take hours that the individual did not notice and cannot explain where they went. The difference that comes into play is “the game keeps a running tally of the total one has spent with it” (Bissell, 351-352).The gamer feels the full extent of how much time they sat there, not accomplishing anything in reality. The open world games’ main story may not take long, however the smaller stories included in the game that are said to be half the fun or even a small task such as “picking flowers” take up over half the games’ total time
(352). Video games are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time. It depends on how the person is affected by video games. Some may be ecstatic about spending hours in a beautiful virtual world as well as some may regret the time spent resulting in a guilty conscience. And some people may not even play video games at all. But, anyone even the biggest video game enthusiast to the biggest video critic could agree that video games are highly entertaining and a complete waste of time.
Video games are bad. Because when somebody plays and gets off it makes them in a bad mood. But video games are good to kill time. And video games are getting more better and they are getting better graphics. And it looks better like if you were there.
There is so much that can be learned from the past. Especially from an event that was as catastrophic as this one. How does one person gain such a grip on so many people? How was he able to influence them to change their entire life’s to conform to what he wanted. Somehow he was able to get them to move to a completely new place and create a world all their (his) own. How does one person convince and force so many people that it was time for their life to end? How does he force them to kill themselves? So many questions that are still being answered to this day. There are plenty of movies and research done on this event but there is still a lot to learn.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
Studies show that video games can in fact, be beneficial to you. Many times when you hear people talk about video games, it is usually talking about how they ruin people’s minds. While there is little evidence to back up those claims, on the other hand, there is also evidence defending it. Video games can have many social, educational, and/or cognitive benefits.
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. When a parent is asked about video games, the first thing that comes to their mind is that they are bad for everyone, and this has always been the case for several video games. In today 's world, video games are becoming more popular and accessible to everyone. Most of the games that are being played by players involve violence and with its increase in popularity, they are often portrayed as a plague to society by many for years. We should develop games that people want to spend time on that are also educational, increasing the attention span of people, visual acuity, and multitasking abilities of all generations. The author very effectively portrays her message of by connecting with her audience charismatically, visually, personally, and logically. In the age of technology we must come to terms with the changing hobbies and daily activities around us. Rather than passing them off as bad campaigning for them to be cut back, censored, we should be focusing on the good that is already done by video games and how we could continue to improve
First video games are not harmful to the public quite the contrary actually. Many video games encourage social behavior and team work whether that is the two player cooperative shooter game that two brothers play together working as a team inspiring positive feelings overriding the negative ones as stated in the study coauthored by David Ewoldsen. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
Video game have been claimed as addictive, a waste of time, and a distraction. While this does apply to some people, others have found the benefits to playing video games. I've been playing, reading and studying videogames since the early 90's and have firsthand knowledge of the possitives and detraments that come along with this hobby. Videogames are a multi billion dollar industry even over taking movies as the most lucrative for of entertainment. So it's no wonder questions are being raised much like the same one's asked of movies when they first came out. Are games to violent, do they teach people how to use weapons, do they make youth complacent and unmotivated to finish studies for example. These questions though warrented have for the most part been proven wrong through vast amounts of studies. I believe that games are a possitive force for education, relaxation and just pure enjoyment and have little to no negative effects.
