Poker has developed a massive following in recent years, with the help of media outlets like ESPN and Fox the game of poker is world renown now. “This mainstream acceptance is due to increased media coverage of high-stakes poker tournaments such as the 2003 World Series of Poker and various weekly tournaments on the World Poker Tour.” (/iml.jou.ufl.edu...) The two outlets that represent this game people would say that the game of poker is a sport. We can all agree that it is a game but does that necessarily make it a sport? Of course the serious poker players will say that it is, but for the players of other games qualified as a sport say otherwise. So despite the recent growth in popularity of poker; the claim of it being a sport has brought criticism. What about poker makes this a valid discussion; the two networks that broadcast it or is there really qualities of sport behind this game.
The first thing one would have to known to be able to pick a side is; what is a sport? There are a couple of ways to define it one of the most common ways is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”(google.com) that is a basic definition now poker would not seem to fit into majority of that. “for sporting activities: relating to or used in physical or recreational activities.”(bing.com) Now this definition is more agreeable with poker particularly the end of the definition. Depending on the definition of ones preference one could agree or disagree with poker being a solid sport. The particular definition I use is Matt Pusateri’s "a competitive human athletic endeavor in which winners and losers are determined by objective scoring or time."(Poker is n...

...it sports require movement if even the slightest. It would not be the right thing to do to call this a sport it would disgrace the name of sports and it could be insulting to those who participate in real sports. Considering all the training and hard work put into their game then have a poker player who probably does nothing in preparation for their game but yet can have the title of athlete. Does not seem fair to all the athletes that risk injury in pursuit for glory in their sport. A card game is not a sport like Matt Pusateri says in his article “lets try to pretend it’s something it isn’t .” "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter
Golf is a very fun activity which is played by many all around the world. But a big concern about golf is, is golf really a sport? Many people say yes but also, many people say no. I am here to tell you why I think golf is a sport.
To me the role of sports in society is for men and women of all ages to grow and develop and be responsible members of society and the community. Sports can bring a community together as long as it doesn 't become the religion of who we are as christians. It also gives us a different setting to interact with each other and learn from one another so we can become better as a whole. Coming together as a community and being able to learn and have fun is probably one of the most important aspects to me when it comes to sports. There should be no reason that parents have to get into arguments because of a call a referee makes in their child 's game. Also sports have become a bigger deal in society then just about fun and learning the sport. A great deal of it, at the higher level has so do with economics and social status’. Players with exceptional talent are now seen in commercials and have huge salaries to play sports or even at the college level earn scholarships to get into colleges for free. I mean hey, if your that good then good for you!
This sport was first played in China by military forces during the 2nd century. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. Want to know why? Soccer is an easy sport to understand, it is a fun sport to play, and you meet a lot of friends through playing!
“An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” According to dictionary.com that would be the definition of a sport. Let’s look at the definition of a sport from Cambridge Dictionary, “a game, competition, or similar activity, done for enjoyment or as a job, that takes physical effort and skill and is played or done by following particular rules.” Marching band has been around for many years and still to this day is underappreciated and there’s been a lot of controversy whether or not it should be considered a sport. If we were to follow the guidelines of these definitions, then why would it not be. Marching band is an exhausting sport and takes an immense amount of physical power and will to be done. Not only that, but it takes an almost impossible amount of skill. Finally, marching band is a majorly competitive activity. Most high schools have a competition about once a week for a season that lasts about fourteen weeks (or about three months). So why is it not considered a sport?
While the definition of a sport may vary by the person, the dictionary definition for a sport can be best described as, “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Dictionary). Cheerleading has been a topic of an ongoing controversial debate as to whether or not it should be recognized as a sport. Players that engage in sports, such as, football, basketball, and baseball all display a genuine liking for their sport, which generally emphasizes why they take part in the activity. Similarly, cheerleaders have this same mindset, but society tends to overlook their passion through the generation of the argument that cheerleading does not require
Literacy is like a game of Texas Hold’em; how well you play depends on how well your opponent communicates. All humans telegraph their thoughts whether it is through their body movements, their speech patterns, or their attention span and it is useful to understand these little details to figure out what would be the best course of action to respond to your opponent with. Literacy, in a competitive sense, is not only limited to Poker tournaments but is also valuable the any general field as learning about one’s opponent can also be applied to learning about one’s allies.
I grew up in front of the T.V. watching bone-crunching hits and massive home runs in old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. I saw the last game the Browns played there and I started bawling like a blubbering idiot when they left the field. Back then sports were much more simple. The games were played for fun. There were no high-school kids bringing down the quality of NBA games, There weren’t any greedy me-first 19 year olds trying to sue their way into the NFL. Nor were there any teams spending 190 million dollars to buy a World Series like the Yankees. But when the 1995 NFL season ended I was finally introduced to the most horrid part of sports... economics.
I had always enjoyed the summer Olympics and the way the athletes strive to be their best, but after watching the winter Olympics I couldn’t help but ask, are these really sports. I have no doubt that the races are sport. There is a definite outcome and no dispute over who won. Then you have these other “sports” like figure skating and ice dancing. Somehow I cannot take any point of view that would support these two as sports. First you have figure skating that requires agility, endurance, stamina, and coordination yet the winner is purely based on the opinion of another. How is that a sport?
It must be a sport if it’s in the Olympics. I’m sure it’s in the Olympics because the kind of shows people do can become very competitive and eligible for the Olympics. I think it might be more competitive than other sports because you’re riding a 1200lb animal and it takes a lot of hard concentration and work to train the horse and get it ready for competition season. If it’s in the Olympics no one can really argue that it is not a sport, therefore I have made my point. If someone were to argue that it is not a sport because “the horse is doing all the work” , well I would tell them you get on it and see how “easy” it is. It’s not easy unless you ride often getting ready for show season, or even just for fun. The rider and the horse need to be in good shape. I would also then argue it’s like the most expensive sport out

Broadcasted competitive gaming has been around since the beginning of arcade games when people were competing for the highest score on shows like Starcade back in 1982(Bell). However, in the past couple of years the competitive gaming world has exploded in growth with more games, more tournaments, more players, and bigger cash prizes. During this most recent November there were eight major tournaments for a multitude of games including League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive and some less competitive games such as Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, and Street Fighter. With over a five million people watching these tournaments it is clearly visible that there is a passionate and large group of people that want this competitive gaming scene to expand. With all the activity going on in only a month and with smaller tournaments running all the time it is clear to see that competitive gaming or more formally called eSports has become in such a small time. However, the important question is whether or not eSports should be considered an actual sport like Football, Soccer, or Basketball. According to a ruling by the Olympic Committee, League of Legends already is, and will be taking a place in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with other games being considered for the 2020 Olympics. Although there are those out that would like to dispute this ruling and say that eSports don’t meet the requirements of a traditional sport. A big argument has been conceived from the committee decision, but not all the arguments being used is valid and then there are those that.
What exactly are sports? To answer this question, sports are activities that people play in to compete and have fun. Sports have been around since man has been on earth. It is something to keep people active and for them to have something to do when there is nothing else. There are many types of sports that involve different materials and rules that you need to complete your objectives in these games. In sports they have many aspects and needs in order to perform and in this essay I will be telling you about many sports through history and ways to play them.
The ancient Olympic event was all about glory, athleticism and total representation of one's own country. It seems to me that the Olympics have lost some of its touch when it comes to athleticism (cryptoworld.com). In addition, whatever happened to the idea of Amateur Athleticism? There was even a federation called International Amateur Athletics Federation formed, and it was stated that in order to participate in the Olympics, one must not be paid. Now, in modern terms, all they must do is take a break from being paid in their professional season to participate. The motto of the ancient Olympics is "Citius, Altius, Fortius", which in terms that we understand, "Faster, Higher, Stronger". Where are these three words are interpreted in table tennis, archery, equestrian, race walking, curling, synchronized swimming, synchronized diving (Contoni). These "games" just are not exciting and have nothing to do with the motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius". So, what does make an Olympic sport a sport? The answer is a majority of vote or enough complaints about discrimination against a sport that the International Olympi...
Sports should be regarded as originally intended: strictly as a form of entertainment. These days, while it is considered entertainment, it is actually much more serious than that. Sports are productive – to a certain extent. When people cross the fine line between fan and fanatic, that's when sports are brought into a new dimension. That's also when the business side of this entertainment approaches the spotlight.
Sports are a prevalent part of culture and are reflected to be social edifices within culture created by assemblies of individuals and centered on morals, benefits, necessities, and capitals. Sport arrangements are formed by assemblies of individuals. Each culture forms and uses sports for its own determinations; hence, sports take different forms from culture to culture. This unswervingly relates to the notion of physical motion and isometrics for diverse cultures. Since several dynamics, such as religious conviction, governments, and finances, definite groups of persons may have restricted access or be constrained or prohibited to participate in sports and isometrics activities. Consequently the significance of sports takes on dissimilar connotations in diverse cultures. Additional aspects, such as which controls sports, what recompenses (essential or non-essential) are acknowledged from sports involvement and the prominence of the athlete have some influence on the significance and place of sports in a specific civilization.
