What exactly are sports? To answer this question, sports are activities that people play in to compete and have fun. Sports have been around since man has been on earth. It is something to keep people active and for them to have something to do when there is nothing else. There are many types of sports that involve different materials and rules that you need to complete your objectives in these games. In sports they have many aspects and needs in order to perform and in this essay I will be telling you about many sports through history and ways to play them.
Some of the first sports ever done were probably some of the simplest ever invented. A couple examples are footraces, wrestling, and boxing. The reason that these sports are really simple is because they don't really require any equipment or extra usage of anything besides your body. This made it to where anybody who wanted to compete in them could. It had no discrimination or anything with it because you didn't have to pay any money so even the poorest of the poor could participate in their own ways. Many boys would spend most of their time racing and competing to see who was the best. A boys dream was to be the fastest racer and compete in a colosseum.
The colosseum was where many events would happen. One of these was called Funeral Games. The Funeral Games were done in the honor of the famously deceased. Many of the games played were sports like chariot racing, gladiator battles, footraces, and archery. These examples are just a few of how many games were actually played. Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Basketball was invented to help the youth in New England spend their energy in the winter months. Since the early 1900’s sports have been a key experience in the United States (“History of Sports”). I have played sports for many years, and the experience has helped me grow significantly as an individual.
