Why Hockey is the Hardest Sport Sports show how athletic a person is or how well they at doing a certain thing. If you're good at running then you could do track. But some sports may require a lot of skill, such as hockey. Hockey is a sport that you play on the ice with ice skates. You play 82 games plus playoffs, and multiple games per week To play hockey you need to know the basics, know the rules, and how difficult it can be. When you think of hockey, you would think of people getting in fights or skating. To even play hockey you need to skate well enough to protect yourself from other people. Theses skates are 2.9 mm or 0.115 inches thick, skating is more tiring than running and they require different muscles. You have to be tough enough to take hits, block shots, or someone hitting you with a hockey stick. The puck you play with is 1 in thick and 3 inches in diameter. You have to hit the puck with a hockey stick, the blade is 12.5 …show more content…
Well, it's pretty hard for a number of reasons. The shifts that you take last about 45 secs to a minute. These shifts are a sprint and sometimes you will have to double shift or even triple shift. This is all done with little rest time. Now to be a good goalie you have to be flexible enough to slide across the crease and not be scared to blocked shots that come at you at 70 mph. Goalies also have worry about screens, tips, and rebounds. To me, the goalie is the hardest position because the equipment weighs about 40-50 pounds and if the other team shoots a puck on the net then the goalie has to keep it out. So much pressure and stress on the goalie because you only have about .125 second of reaction time to try to save the puck. A hockey player once said, “ You have to the strength of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, accuracy of a sniper while doing this on ⅛ inch thick blades on cold slippery ice, and 5 other people trying to kill you. Is hockey hard? I don’t you tell me.”-Brendan
They also provide a rather rigid out-of-bounds border that hockey players strategically use to their skating advantage. Probably the second most popular thing that excites fans after a thrilling goal is a hard check against the dashing boards.
Once you learn to proficiently skate the next skill is learning how to shoot a hockey puck. These two skills are essential in playing hockey and enjoying the game. Learning to shoot a hockey puck effectively is essential to making goals in hockey. Once you learn the skill of shooting then practice, practice, practice and you could develop into the goalies worst nightmare. There are many diverse shots that can be made during the course of a hockey game. We will be focusing on the “snap shot” and the “slap shot”. Here are the basics of shooting a snap shot.
to as ice hockey. In its origin, hockey is one of the oldest games played. The earliest mention of the sport of hockey dates back
The sport of hockey was invented in the 1800s (game). The first hockey sticks invented were made of wood from the hornbeam tree (Feschuck). These hockey sticks were cut from a single piece of wood, and they featured an upturned blade (Feschuck). Hespeler’s 1905, the Hespeler stick company designed the first two piece hockey stick (Feschuck). This hockey stick had a blade that was inserted into the shaft (Feschuck). Later in the 1950s, manufacturers began to wrap their wood blades in fiberglass (Feschuck). In addition to these improvements, in the 1960s Stan Mikita broke the blade of his hockey stick by shooting the puck with a curved method (Feschuck). After doing this, Mikita and a fellow teammate began to bend their blades under door jams in order to increase the curvature of the blade and further strengthen it
Hockey is one of the most dangerous sports to play today, not because of the fast pace of the game, but because of the some of the equipment that is used. The most punishing and non forgiving piece of equipment in hockey is the puck. The word puck became mainstream in 1867 in Canada. It is possible that Halifax natives, who were Irish, introduced the word to Canada. The hockey puck has evolved over the years it came into existence just like the game itself. People have tried and failed to think of news ways to make a hockey puck, but only one way has proved itself to be the only one. Without the puck there would be no hockey culture. Lets lace up the skates and skate our way into what the hockey culture is and take a look at how the puck has created this culture from the beginning of its time.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Hockey is a very quick game. Probably the fastest game out there. The speed really helps with entertainment. Watching the players go back and forth, scoring chances everywhere. The watchers blood pumping quick and hardly any stoppages in the game. It is they only sport that actually allows fighting to occur. This entertains and gives pride to the fans when their teams player wins. As said before, any quality of other sports can be found in Hockey, In this case it was Boxing.
Every person has something inside them that defines them as an individual. This uniqueness can take many forms and could be visible to the outside world or quietly hidden, deep inside. Passion for something specific is often the guiding factor in developing one’s uniqueness and often in ways that were not foreseen. My love of ice hockey has changed my life in ways that I could not have imagined and has shaped my personal growth. My ability to stop a hockey puck defined me; or so I thought!
Probably one of the most important decisions I've made in my life happened this year. The decision was me , choosing whether i wanted to do drumline or play hockey. As a freshman going into the first year of highschool, it lead me to think of plenty of things. But one important fact that stuck out was me deciding if I wanted to pursue music or sports. As a freshman , I knew that I couldn't balance sports and marching band at the same time. Rehearsal for marching band happened everyday after school until 5 pm. I knew I couldn't do homework and study for tests with only 3 hours if hockey started at 9. So, I made the decision of choosing drumline over hockey. Not only would it help me balance my time doing homework, it would also help me on my
Before beginning to play hockey you must know the rules of the game. A hockey
Skates used to be more like skis. Players glided on the ice rather than actually skated. Artifacts also show the use of animal bones as skate blades as well. Currently, steal blades are used. There is a small arc groove on the blade that provides the friction needed to counteract the slipperiness of the ice (Haché 37). The boot of the skate is hard enough to protect the foot from puck impact but also flexible enough “to allow the calf muscle to push forward and to ease knee bending when the player crouches” (Haché 35).
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education
