This was my first experience at a Toastmaster Club meeting. I attended the Savannah Club at Memorial Health. At first I felt a little out of place because it wasn’t something I would normally go to. But just in the matter of minutes they made me feel welcome and like one of their own. In the beginning I had to stand up and introduce myself and tell why I was there and what I wanted to gain from this experience. I had a few people there ask me, when you heard of toastmasters what did you think it was about. My response was well at a wedding your best man gives his embarrassing speech, so with that being said I think toastmasters is about giving speeches and working on your speech giving skills. Toastmasters is about leadership, it’s about getting up in front of an audience and giving a speech that the audience can paint a image with your words. Much to my surprise it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. I was expecting it was a room full of people getting up and giving long boring speeches. But it wasn’t anything like that. There was a lot of interesting topics that we covered.
One of the things I enjoyed the most about the whole meeting was the Table Topics. We played a game that was very interesting. We had three dice. We would roll them and see what number you get on each on. So then you would use the number you got on first dice you rolled. We had a paper with different topics for example; if you got a 1 then your topic would be if I could go back on time. Then you would use the number you got on the second dice and go to the paper. Say you got a 5 and on the paper it said I would never do that again. Then you would use your third dice and as you got a 2. You would look on the paper and it may have because hair was to long. So the...

...dience attention you should try to relate to them.
Then the end was getting near to our meeting so we judged each speaker. On the 3-5 minute speeches every one finished in the time given. In the 5-8 minute group there was two people that did not make their time limit and in the 8-10 minute group only one person made their time limit and that was the girl that talked about alcoholism. We judged the speakers on how comfortable they were up there given their speech. Like was they using hand gestures or was they clinched to the podium. We also judged on how well they prepared their speeches.
Once we finished judging they called on all the guest to stand up and tell what they thought about it. I had to be honest it wasn’t as boring as I was expecting and it was very informative. I learned a lot of what the audience is looking for when a person is giving their speech.
Everyone took their roles very serious, which was the fun part to me. When doing a project like this you want everyone being as serious as possible and playing their role as it should be. Logan Diehl (mayor) really set the stimulation when he stepped up to the podium in his suit to give an overview of the meeting and call the meeting to order. Another aspect of the stimulation I enjoyed and thought it brought realistic vibes was when the city council representatives which included myself introduced themselves and stated what ward they represented before asking their
It was just us: thirty young men, and our two city counselors. I vividly remember the theme of the discussion: "What is your biggest goal and biggest fear in life?" What I heard that night from people I still barely knew astonished me. The hopes and fears that I heard from my fellow city members truly inspired me to work hard in life and do whatever I can to face my fears. When it was finally my turn to share with the group, I told everyone that my biggest goal was to do well in high school and college, find my dream job, have a family, and be happy. That goal may sound very ordinary, but that is truly my dream for the future. Next, I told everyone that my biggest fear was to lose motivation in life. I explained how I work so hard in high school because I have the motivation of my goal that I mentioned previously. If I lost this motivation, I do not know where I would
The clichés, as listed above, were really enjoyable. Most of them were some of the things I avoided in high school as well, not that I vowed to avoid them at all costs – I just never got around to doing any of them because I was always far too busy reading. I really loved watching Julia and Dave go through their cliché list, though it started off as more of a joke for them rather than a die-hard mantra, but seeing how they experienced the different events and how hard they tried to make some of them happen was really entertaining.
I’m going to tell you about Colonial Taverns and why they were so popular in the revolutionary times. The taverns were a significant part of My Brother Sam Is Dead, due to the fact that the Meeker family managed one.
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. I just couldn’t believe how well everyone contributed and gave an outstanding
I understand that this might be helpful to someone who may be attending the meeting for the first time in order to better understand the meeting. However, nearly 20 minutes was used to rehearse this scripted information. I think it would be more beneficial to the meeting attendees if only half that time was spent reading this information and instead, this time, was spent on interaction with each
Therefore talk about the cost of bad meetings. Because bad meetings lead to even more meetings, and over time the costs become awe-inspiring.
The speaker did not seem to me to be successful. He brought a new idea to the audience with good reasoning behind it, but there was little motivation to apply in the day to day life. The audience is a class of college students who are interested in knowing what the speaker is passionate about.
The main goal of the event was to have the opportunity to meet other interests on campus from a sorority. They had the opportunity to do this with the eight of the Beta Phi Interests and four interests from the group Luis, Gilbert, Jessie, and Omar. They set up and participated in different activities to get to know more about each other in forms of icebreaker games. The first activity was to get into two separate lines facing each other, then someone asked a question where everyone then had the opportunity to answered the question with whoever they were face to face with. Every time before a question was asked they moved down the line in order to have the opportunity to interact with everyone. Another activity was that they were divided into
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. I was able to see myself grow as a presenter as I noticed that my
Then a council member would talk about what they recommend the council would do which was mostly emergency legislation. Each topic has a letter from the alphabet assigned to it. For example D was on the Topic of the authorization to enter into an agreement for professional engineering services relative to the Dussel/Salisbury corridor signal program modifications project. A woman called every member of the council by their last name, this is the time either they can say rather the agreed with the topic at hand with a simple yes or no. I noticed how respectful the council was with each other. They all waited for the Mayor to address them with a Mr., a Mrs., or President. They responded with a thank you Mayor before they started talking about the topic. Even though they was respectful they also like to have fun there were a few moments were they laughed. The Mayor also addressed us and explain that they were moving so fast because the topics already went from committees then administer and finally the council votes. The Mayor announced the hearing of the public. This is the time for the member of the community can talk about 3 minutes per
That was an excellent mechanism for providing information on the different contributions and challenges of the various camps. Moreover, their active intervention during those meetings helped stop the blaming. Finally team members must create shared views of problems and shared approaches for resolving them. Those commonalities must be acceptable to everyone if they are to provide the core for new ways of doing things. The monthly problem chats represented the beginning of process if developing acceptable approaches.
Most of the groups had used Messages and Google Docs. Using Messages would have been helpful to my group, since there were times when we couldn’t contact each other or work on it because of no internet. Not only did they show me that Messages was useful. Because my team was one of the last two groups to go, the teams before us gave me examples of what to do for our presentation. Most of their presentations were well done, but there are some things that they could have fixed. In the beginning of a presentation we were supposed to write their names down and this was hard because their names were too small for me. Also even though they tried to make contact with the audience it would have been nice if I didn’t have to see them lift their heads up and down often. What they could have done was broken their parts up and remember certain parts so they wouldn’t have to bob up the heads. However, even though they did that I could hear their voices loud and clear.
>>What information was presented? What did you want the community to “take away” from the event?
I was really impressed on how well organized Alexia Hall was with the class she seem to know where she wanted to the class to be at the end of the semester. We were past out with the class policies and a syllabus of what we were going to do the whole semester. I thought this was very convenient so that there was no mixed signals in the group.
