The main goal of the event was to have the opportunity to meet other interests on campus from a sorority. They had the opportunity to do this with the eight of the Beta Phi Interests and four interests from the group Luis, Gilbert, Jessie, and Omar. They set up and participated in different activities to get to know more about each other in forms of icebreaker games. The first activity was to get into two separate lines facing each other, then someone asked a question where everyone then had the opportunity to answered the question with whoever they were face to face with. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Omega Omega Chapter hosted the 49th Annual Debutante Cotillion on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Forty-two young ladies dressed in formal white gowns danced a Traditional Waltz with their fathers and escorts after a formal introduction to society. This year’s theme for the Cotillion was, “Cultured Pearls in a Winter Wonderland”.
It was a Monday afternoon, and there were about ten people varying ages from twelve to forty and a spokesperson. The room was warm and filled with brand new chairs and couches. They even had a coffee machine to for us. The meeting started at 7
I introduced myself. I learned that the facilitator for the night is actually a member, a 30-year sober member. I was asked to enjoy refreshments and was greeted cordially by present members. The meeting was held in a church reception hall and the room was set up with 3 tables parallel from each other. I participated in this group as an observer, although, I did introduce myself at the beginning. The issue of this group was alcoholism and how to stay sober. The purpose of the group is to be a support system for those who are struggling with sobriety and those who have been successful in sobriety. The group focuses its healing around the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. This support group is open and provides no limit to the attendee
On April 21, I witness one of the biggest and funniest event of the year, The AGD Lip Sync contest. All of Greek Life and other club on campus were there to witness a competition to see who could mock and make the best performance for their favorite artist. My fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi was there, lip signing to R&B greatest idols, Usher. Others mocked artist such as Justin Bieber, Fergie, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, The Spice Girls, and One Direction. Started with stating who was in the competition and started off with the winner of last year competition Kappa Sigma. The main goal was for each team to make a great choreographed dance and while at the same time lip singing the song. Much as the show Lip Sync Battle. All team had such great performances, seeing as if they practiced for months on end, but in the end the team who won again was Kappa Sigma, who sang the lyrics of Kanye West.
At our pep rally we all just kind of stood in shock for a while, then the fun started. We all “moved up”, the freshmen walked over to the sophomore spot, the sophomores to the junior spot, the juniors to the senior spot, and the seniors just all walked out. It was a very eventful day and it probably could not have gone better. My first year attending Keyman (Pennsylvania DeMolay’s week long leadership conference) I was a fairly new and scrawny DeMolay. I couldn’t speak in front of people, had no clue how to even handle suits or professional attire, and barely had scratched the surface of all of our Orders facets and faces. But there I was, in the frighteningly large, open, and fancily decorated Memorial Hall, checking in for my first Keyman Conference. I had no idea I would change so much in a single week. After checking in and saying goodbye, my grandparents left and I was greeted by one of my group Advisors for the week, Dad Ullom. He showed me to my room, and I was the first one there. As I sat silently amid the 6 bunk-beds, I wondered how my weekend would pan out. One by one, new faces were ushered into the room by Dad Ullom, and more bags filled the room. Nervously, I decided it would be a good idea to introduce myself, as I knew I would be with the other boys all week. I was a little surprised when they were calm, nonchalant even about meeting a new DeMolay. I was even more stunned when, as the group began to slowly unpack, we started talking.
Activity 1. Before attending Among Friends, I did not know what to expect. I knew of the center, but only because other classmates have attended their facility to complete their own volunteer hours. I figured I would go to Among Friends, play some games or maybe make some crafts, and be on my way. I have never been in setting before like the one at Among Friends, so my expectations were open.
That being said, in future events such as ours would need to more actively recruit younger individuals to be apart of the class. This will allow rich conversations between both young and old and further, enhance the events experience. Another small thing that I would have changed is increased the overall time of the event to allow for more instruction as well as time for discussions after the event to
The Center building of Lane Community College holds a threshold of student life. With a plethora of seating areas, food options, and caffeine access there’s no surprise that this building serves as the metaphorical coral reef of campus. Starting the event my first general feeling was one of curiosity not on the subject but the people going to the event. I genuinely wanted to find out how people thought about the subject and current events. The people who participated were well informed about the subject. I did enjoy the different environment and the conversation that happened. This even facilitated a conversation between my “Intro to Ethnic Studies” instructor concerning or opinion or knowledge of the subject. I appreciate the opportunity to talk to people
...ole, the female students became close when they became true to themselves and the cliques begin to blend. For example, Gretchen, one of the Plastics became close friends with the Asian students. Social acceptance should not be the most important thing in anyone’s life. Always wanting this acceptance will cause people to change into someone they are not.
The first thing we did at this event was play a game to relax and get comfortable with each other after that we talked about finals. We went around the table talking about how many finales each of us had and how prepared we felt for them. This was really helpful cause hearing that other people were as anxious about their finals as me made me feel better about myself and how I was feeling.
This event involved coordinated efforts between administrators, faculty, and organizations such as the Women’s Center, and the Miami University College Democrats. There were multiple training sessions so volunteers could easily answer questions that interested students asked. Various clubs were everywhere on campus, in every quad and central location.
At the beginning of the World Café, I felt that the food was a great way to set the tone and atmosphere for the event. It took the educational tone out of the event and allowed us to meet everyone briefly without expectations. Everyone, regardless if they were shy or not joined into the conversation. The next step was the ice breaker game which was also a great way to break the silence it was quiet and forced us to communicate get an understanding of each other in order to work together. These two things I felt played a contributing role in the success of the conversations at the table it took away anxiety and helped form an idea of how the event will flow.
