The Importance Of Wettability

806 Words2 Pages

Wettability can be defined as the extent of intimate contact between liquid and solid. Many factors may affect the wettability like melting temperature, pre heating temperature, reinforcement material, amount, size, stirring speed, stirring time etc. Poor wettability can deteriorate the mechanical properties, wear resistance as well as corrosion resistance of the material. For better load transfer, the wettability of particle should be high (Prabu et al., 2006).
(Hashim et al., 1999) concluded that addition of wetting agent (Mg, Ti, Ca etc) can improve the wettability in Al based MMCs. pre heating can also help in improvement of wettability by improving surface energy and reducing surface tension of the particles. It was observed that the particle …show more content…

It was concluded that Ti improves the wettability of B4C. Small amount, 0.45 %wt of Ti improves the wettability between B4C and Al matrix because of formation of thin layer of TiC or TiB. (Agarwala and Dixit, 1981) investigated the effect of solid lubricant like graphite on wear property of material for the development of Al based bearing material. For that purpose stirrer speed, temperature of melt and pre heating temperature of graphite were optimized. Wettability was found good at the melting temperature of 850 ˚C and pre heating temperature lower than 600 ˚C or higher than 700 ˚C was found favorable for (wettability) retention of graphite particles. (Ghosh et al., 1984) investigated the effect of parameter like stirring speed, impeller diameter, position of impeller and holding temperature on wettability of Al2O3(Alumina) in Al-Mg alloy. It was concluded that wettability between Al2O3 and Al-Mg alloy was improved due to the optimized values of parameters like, stirring speed 960 rpm, diameter of impeller (d/D) 0.63, height of impeller (h/H) 0.81, and holding temperature 600 ˚C. (Prasad and Asthana, 2004) explored the applications of aluminium metal matrix composite in automobile industries, specifically for tribological properties. From literature survey it was concluded that poor
