Hoover Dam, sometimes referred to as Boulder Dam, was constructed between 1931 and 1935 to harness the waters of the wild Colorado River. The dam was a challenging task for even the most experienced professionals. Many have called Hoover Dam a wonder of the modern world because of its unprecedented massive size and its designers’ ingenuity in overcoming obstacles that were considered impossible barriers at the time (Stevens).
According to the Cobuild Advanced Learning Dictionary, a dam is defined as, A wall that is built across a river in order to stop the water flowing and to make a lake.” The Hoover Dam is located in the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. It was first called the Boulder Dam but was later named the Hoover Dam. It was named after President Herbert Hoover. Hoover was not only the president but also an engineer, and when he was Secretary of Commerce (before being President) he urged the construction of the dam. The dam is 726 feet tall and is about 1200 feet wide.

The waterbuck is a type of antelope or deer that resides near water at all times; this is what gives this animal its unique name. A group of waterbucks are identified as a herd or cluster. The males and females do not have a specific name that is used to refer to its gender, but the babies are commonly called calves. The scientific name given to the waterbuck is Kobus ellipsiprymnus.

A community is defined as a group of people living in the same geographic area with shared interests, principles and values. Communities are not monolithic and have differences in power structures, classes, gender and race. Community based programming must therefore take into account the unique structure of each community to establish effective programs that meets the needs of each community. In this paper, I will review the Chesilot Water Project, one of the successful community based programs explored in Were’s “Local Organization and Gender in Water Management: A Case Study from the Kenya Highlands.”
