Students send Grinch Grams, a gift of words, this holiday season to their classmates. They learn that words have the power to make hearts grow — just like the Grinch’s heart grew. Have them draw classmates’ names. Give each student a heart. The hearts on my bulletin board are made with die cuts that I triple layered (red, gold, and white) to symbolize how the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes. You certainly can do this, but if you want to save class time, download "Grinch Gram Hearts" to use in your classroom. The students think about the person whose name they drew and write one positive comment, a sentence or two, on the heart. As an example, I created Grinch Grams for my homeroom students and put them on my hallway bulletin board for the
holidays. When students are finished, they give their hearts to their classmates. My sixth graders love to decorate lockers on birthdays and holidays, so they jump on the opportunity to decorate their lockers with the Grinch grams to match the bulletin board in the hallway.

The Grinch, in sociology terms, had a stigma or blemish, in school he was teased of his furry green body that did not correspond with the others in Whoville. When the Grinch decides to leave Whoville he curses the day and the gift-giving because his classmates called it garbage and judged the way he looked after he shaved. In a future scene, we again feel sympathy for the Grinch in his response to hitting himself or using noise distractions to forget his past and to forget his loneliness. As Cindy Lou speaks out against the norms of the town she wants to invite the Grinch over to the celebration and to accept the award of the cheer minster. When Cindy Lou arrives at the lair and lets the Grinch see the invitation and what he would be awarded as she leaves the Grinch describes his “plans that involve him which is quoted, “Four o'clock, wallow in self-pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one. 5:30, jazzercise. 6:30, dinner with me.
The Grinch is an individual, who is bitter and lives in a cave on the snowy Mount Crumpits, which is 10,000 feet tall and north of Whoville town. The Grinch age is unknown, however looks to be about in his mid-40s and is unemployed. Thus, results in him spending a lot of time alone in his cave with his dog, Max, as his social companion. At any rate, the Grinch faced many issues when he was younger, causing his current behavior, where he was abandoned as a child, and made fun of because of his look and horrendous appearance at school and as a way to cope he decided to run away. When the letters have returned the teacher will make sure to keep them until the math activity. For the math activity, I would use the locations of their pen pals to help them learn to graph points on the positive side of a coordinate plane. This will be effective because the students will want to see where their pen pal is in reference to one of their classmates and they will want to know where flat Stanley has been in the world. I would use a generic print out of a world map with coordinates to help plot the points of where flat Stanley has been. For an English Language Leaner this could be a very exciting part for them to show their classmates where they are from and maybe where they sent their flat Stanley to was back to their home country and can encourage them to feel more comfortable in their new

The East Pennsboro elementary school raised money for a statue at a local park. The statue was a ring of children that were holding hands. There was one child missing; the link was broken. The statue was dedicated to East Pennsboro students that did not make it to their graduation. My sophomore year of high school inspired this piece of artwork.
Eight years ago as I was preparing for my middle school graduation, I remember my homeroom teacher presenting each student with a parting gift. It was an envelope and inside of this envelope was a strip of paper containing notable characteristics of the respective student. When I opened mine, it read “—thoughtful and extremely perceptive of others and her environment. She is intelligent and has varied interests and opinions that hardly anyone knows about. She is an excellent student and a loyal friend.” Though I did not consider the significant meaning of these words at the time, when the paper resurfaced a few years later, I read the paper again, this time with deeper reflection.
