Engendering trust is an important factor for organizational success and the welfare of its employees; however, encouraging and maintaining trust can be difficult and demanding at times. Trust is essential to an effective team. A team lacking trust isn't really a team at all, it's just a group of people who work together. They unsuccessfully communicate with one another effectively, fail to share important information, and they often don't cooperate or work well with one another. As a result, they are not cohesive, nor do they collaborate efficiently as a group. Trust is neither given or gained freely; therefore, one will not trust another until that person had earned their trust through a combination of demonstrating integrity, commitment, understanding, and respect towards another (Garman, Fitz, & Fraser, 2006). One way team members can engender trust through commitment. Individuals need to attempt to honor commitments whenever they can and when they can't, how one handles failed commitments is even more important in building trust. Another way to engender trust is to maintain confidentiality. Confidentiality is imperative for building and sustaining trust and for ensuring open and honest communication. Studies show that gaining the trust of a group of individuals is critical to become an effective leader. It is the foundation that forms the team. “Developing a leadership style that produces trust is the ultimate root and source of influencing another” (Gaiter, 2013 p. 324). This rings true in any leadership role. Any coach, pastor, or department manager needs to understand that building trust takes time and effective leadership is a time consuming task. Leaders are always being watched by their teams and leaders must always act with integrity and honesty while trying to better the team he or she leads (Gaiter, 2013). Once trust has been built between leadership and their peers, productivity, team cooperation and morale have been shown to increase dramatically.

“Helping a work group evolve into a true team requires imaginative and cost-effective team building and a special set of leadership skills” (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, p.321). Trust is also extremely important whether the team is functional or dysfunctional. Faith without work is dead. A team that does not work together or believe in one another will not work. It may work, but who wants to work around negative individuals that always clash when trying to achieve goals. For a team to be effective there must be more than just skills involved. There must be trust, cooperation and loyalty that will indeed lead to success.
Without trust in your teammates there is no teamwork. When you focus on yourself and how you are playing, you must trust your teammates to do their jobs. If you do not trust your teammates to do their own jobs and try to do their jobs yourself, you are letting your team down because you are not doing your job properly. Work
If you do, you can often regain their trust. A leader build trust by consistently exemplifying competence, connection and character. People will forgive occasional mistakes on ability. And they will give you time to connect.
The trust that is necessary within a team to be successful in itself has made me closer to my teammates than anyone else in my life. You have to trust that every single man, offensively and defensively will perform their individual duty on each play to allow the team to work as a whole. This not only teaches you how to trust your peers, but it also teaches you how to successfully work in a group setting, which can be easily correlated to life and education in college and beyond. This trust forces you to build connections with teammates that leads to you being willing to sacrifice parts of yourself to see the team succeed. When you mix some of these lessons of trust with the sheer amount of time that you spend with these people on a daily basis, you are naturally gifted with some of the best friends and friendships anyone could ever ask for.
