The Law of Solid Ground – Trust Is the Foundation of Leadership Trust is the foundation of leadership. It is the most important thing. Leaders cannot repeatedly break trust with people and continue to influence them. Your people know when you make mistakes. The real question is whether you’re going to fess up. If you do, you can often regain their trust.
A leader build trust by consistently exemplifying competence, connection and character. People will forgive occasional mistakes on ability. And they will give you time to connect. But they won’t trust someone who has slips in character.

The Law of Intuition – Leaders Evaluate Everything with a Leadership Bias. The Law of Intuition is based on facts coupled with instincts plus other intangible factors, such as employee morale, organizational momentum, and relationship dynamics. The Law of Intuition often separates the great leaders from the merely good ones. Leadership intuition is the ability of a leader to read what’s going on. For that reason, I say that leaders are
John Maxwell once said, “People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision.” A leader must have a solid foundation as a human being before he can try to pursue the public about his visions. He will be examined from every angle about his leadership traits, style, characteristic, and so forth. All of these areas of leadership comes together in what we know as integrity. Integrity is doing what is right morally; it requires honesty, making the “right” decisions for the community, taking the blame, and being selfless. In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Machiavelli’s The Prince, there are various examples as to what is the difference between a good and a bad leader, including initiative, accountability, generosity, and the leader’s values.
“Do as I say, not as I do” say’s the parent to the child who is watching their every move. Leaders may not say it, but their actions show inconsistencies in their leadership. How can leaders truly be trusted is they are not willing to change themselves? How can leaders breakthrough the wall of resistance if they are not willing to engage their employees, dispel the fear factor, and allow themselves to be vulnerable?
Lastly, the key to successful leadership is getting all of one’s followers on their side. In order to achieve this, leaders must gain all their followers trust. Bennis outlines four key elements to gain this trust. Primarily, constancy must be enforced. Leaders must stay the course. Second, congruity is essential. This is so the leaders can “walk the talk.” Third, reliability is needed so that leaders are present when it matters most. Lastly, leaders honor their commitments through integrity. All of these important, aspects gain the trust of their followers by their side.
Up until this point, much of the focus has been centered on defining effective leadership from characteristics and traits that have been identified through research and behavioral science, but what do the followers have to say about the leader’s characteristics and traits? Furthermore, what makes someone want to follow a leader? Thus, there are five specific traits or characteristics a leader must display before being followed, and the first characteristic or trait is honesty (Shead, 2016). While people desire to follow an honest leader, honesty is the key trait that allows the leader to influence others besides power; however, leaders have very few opportunities to demonstrate honesty, especially in large organizations (Shead, 2016). Principle 3: In this section General Halstead teaches first of the principle of the 360 degrees of trust (Halstead 32). Halstead taught me how a leader needs to have a strong degree of trust in every aspect of their lives. a leader needs to have trust in his or her leaders, followers, and themselves (Halstead 32). This concept, I feel, is one that every leader needs to learn before they can lead efficiently. Leaders need to be able to trust the people under them to do what they are told to do to benefit the team. At the same time, followers need to be able to trust their leaders to do the same for them. Intuition is another aspect which defines me. The intuitive nature allows me to take decisions based on what I assume or think. This may not be supported by facts, but in most cases such decisions turns out to be the right ones. As a leader, I have been relying too much on intuition alone. Though it is necessary and has proven to be effective at times, this irrational thinking which lacks empirical support may end up causing a failure to a group activity. In some vital groups which I may become a leader, a small failure could cause the team mates, members or subordinates to lose their trust in me.
This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. He provides intriguing insight about leaders and emphasizes the integrity and authenticity that such people carry. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
Honesty and integrity are the two most important characteristics for leadership success in any work place. The foundation of any relationship is honesty. To be a good leader, one must be honest. My goal is to create a workplace that every people can trust me and I can trust them so that we work together for a common goal. I would like to be a trusted leader because I am sure this characteristic will bring Done Right and On Time result in my career.
The emphasis on leaders being not just executives and managers, and that not all executives and managers are leaders, is extremely vital. Anyone can strive to be a leader in whatever organization in which they are involved. Bennis and Nanus claim that leadership is about character, setting the example for how team members treat one other (and in a corporate setting, their clients as well), being truthful and sustaining organizational trust, and encouraging themselves and others to learn. On one hand, it can be easy to see how many people in leadership positions do no match up to these standards of leadership. On the other, it seems a bit like common sense to be truthful to others and to effectively communicate with people who work together everyday. Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency.
