Credibility in Leadership Credibility holds significance in a leadership position. According to Kouzes and Posner, the foundation of leadership is the act of credibility (2012). Without credibility, organizations can deteriorate. The lack of credibility in a leadership role creates mistrust and ill feelings towards leaders. These burdens constituents carry, disrupts the organization of being successful. Leaders should full understand credibility. Credibility is earned when leaders set example and commit to their words (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). When credible is present within an organization, constituents are more motivated, committed, and feel a strong sense of team spirit for their company (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). Credibility is not just another term that is defined, but it is a term shown through actions. The act of believability, trustworthiness, reliability and responsibility, are key components of credibleness (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). We recognized great leaders when “their actions aligned with their words” (Kouzes & Posner, 2012, p.37). The importance of knowledge, expertise and competency, are abilities that contribute to credibility (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). In my life, my grandfather has always been my role model. He valued his beliefs and always abides by his values. My grandfather is a pastor. His leadership position in church gave him many responsibilities. I was never disappointed because he always tried to live an honest life. He was always trustworthy, reliable and responsible not just in church but also for his family. If you value honesty, therefore you should not gossip. What you claim is important and when your actions follow through, leads you to a more credible person. From my own personal experience, my manager addressed how it is unethical to use foul language in the workplace. She claimed that we should always be in a professional manner with or without customers around. In my perspective, the law applied to her differently. She would always curse whenever it was not necessary. My colleagues, including myself, faced dilemma whether to bring awareness of how she violate the rule. Due to her higher position, it was difficult to address the behaviour. My manager’s behaviour caused me to have ill feelings towards her. If she truly valued creating a professional workplace, she would do what she claimed. When leaders do the opposite of what they claim, it creates mistrust within the organization. To earn trust from the organization, it is important to set an example and model the way (Kouzes & Posner). People tend to words and then observe actions (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). Leadership is a communication process of a leader and individuals in which the leaders behavior or attitude directs individuals towards any goal effectively. It is widely believed that leadership creates the vital link between organizational effectiveness and people’s performance at an organizational level (Avolio, 1999; McGrath and MacMillan, 2000). The effectiveness of an organization depends upon the leader having an effective leadership style in order to effectively reach the goal of the organization; with it being one of the key driving forces for improving a firm’s performance. Scholars suggest that effective leadership behaviors can facilitate the improvement of performance when organizations face problems (McGrath and MacMillan, 2000). To effectively achieve leadership of individuals and organizational outcomes, four theories can be used; Fiedler’s Contingency Model, Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model, Vroom & Yetton Participative Leadership Model, and House & Dessler Path-Goal Theory.
Lastly, the key to successful leadership is getting all of one’s followers on their side. In order to achieve this, leaders must gain all their followers trust. Bennis outlines four key elements to gain this trust. Primarily, constancy must be enforced. Leaders must stay the course. Second, congruity is essential. This is so the leaders can “walk the talk.” Third, reliability is needed so that leaders are present when it matters most. Lastly, leaders honor their commitments through integrity. All of these important, aspects gain the trust of their followers by their side.
An authentic leader must be inspirational, compassionate and should be self-reflective and must establish clear communication channels from all ends. I chose my father as my ethical role model because out of everyone who has taught me throughout my life, I think he tried to impart the most. One time, right after the 2008 presidential election, he told me that he "raised me to be a democrat", which is an interesting statement for two reasons because 1: as a Catholic family, the Church requires we be Republicans and 2: because he never told me to be a democrat. This anecdote is important because it shows how my dad taught me about things indirectly, through things he says or does to others, but not with just commands to me. He taught me life is not just about right and wrong but it's about helping people and experiencing new things.

The first one is my paraprofessional, Carrie Gebhardt. Miss Carrie has been with me since I was in Pre-K. She teases me and says that she and I are just like an “old married couple” because we’ve been together so long--we know each other inside and out! That always makes me laugh. I think Miss Carrie is a good example of a leader for me because she makes me work hard at school, even when I’d rather be watching ESPN Sports Center on my phone. She encourages me to do my best and won’t let me turn in sloppy, lazy work. Miss Carrie brings out the best in me, and I think that’s what good leaders are supposed to do. My dad is my other good leadership role model. At times, he is very hard on me in regards to my behavior. He tells me: “do what you’re told to do, when you’re told to do it, to the best of your abilities, every time.” He says that’s called self-discipline. Good leaders need that. He has also had lots of talks with me about how to treat other people. My dad is one of the friendliest people I know. He is always talking to folks, especially after church. My mom says he has good people skills. I want to be like that. Good leaders know how to make the people around them feel good about themselves. They will then feel worthy and valuable, which will probably make them work harder at their job or cause. Both Miss Carrie and my dad are good leadership role models for me on a daily basis.
