In this week?s unit, transformational, authentic leadership and fostering collaboration were debated. Transformational leadership is about influencing others to achieve organizational goals. Authentic leadership is about an interpersonal perspective in which a leader invest in his followers for advancement. Fostering collaboration is about the ability to work as team. In addition, Mr. Anthony is a real life example of transformational and an authentic leadership. Mr. Anthony and I set down to discussed his leadership experience. Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership is defined as ?people who tap the motives of followers in order to better reach the goals of leaders and followers? ( Northouse, 2016, p.162). Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
In an effort to understand the questionnaire, one must first understand the definition of an Authentic Leader. Genuine, trustworthy and reliable are a few words that are interchangeable with the term authentic. Authentic leaders exhibit qualities of confidence, transparency, and high moral standard and are usually very confident (Gardner, Avolio, Luthans, May and Walumbwa, 2005). A person that is considered to be authentic is one who taking account for their behavior and a person who is true to themselves and what they think. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word authentic means to be genuine or real (Merriam-Webster.com, 2004, p47). Also, according to Merriam-Webster, the term leadership is defined as having the capacity to lead (merriam-webster.com, 2018). Thus, authentic leadership is the act of someone leading others by utilizing his or her own individual style. “Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership. They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference than they are in power, money, or prestige for themselves.” (George, 2004, p.12).
Generally, authentic leaders are positive people with precise self-awareness. Linda is an example of an authentic leader. She is a leader with great virtue. She is not only a role model for her followers, she also shares information with her staff, encourages open communication, and engages her subordinates in the decision making process for the unit. Her genuineness and openness create a virtuous circle, and it turns out that people come to have faith in her. Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
Transformational leaders are building blocks for the job satisfaction and commitment. Transformational leaders develop extra mile partnership. Followers go extra mile for the leader and work beyond the expectations.
Transformational leadership is defined as the type of leadership where the leader identifies the changes required, creates a vision and guides the changes through to execution. The purpose of the leader is also to assist individuals within an organization to identify the importance of their roles in the job to the benefit of the organization. (Waddelll, 2013, page 170). For instance a leader can be a role model that inspires followers to challenge beyond their self-interest for the benefit of the group. Leadership is complex, no two leaders are the same from the way they handle power, to personal attributes and even the struggles again stereotypes, especially for women. Oxford (2014) defines leadership as “The action of leading a group of people or an organization” but what make leaders great? Leaders are a representation of a community, business or people; they speak on their behalf and are rallied behind for change. Power is what sets leaders into the history books, with power comes an idea, something radical the people feel passionate, demanding for action. Qualities of a good leader are constantly being researched to find why some leaders are more successful then others, although similarities occur, it all depends on history, context and an idea. Women in leadership have to break stereotypes usually enforcing great change and communication with the followers more, where men focus on the task and have a stricter style of leadership.
Transformational Leadership is a leader ability to evoke change in people and ideas. I believe that transformational leaders work to transform people into leaders for the future.
HOW TO EXEMPLIFY TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP Leadership is the tender ability to coerce or influence someone greatly towards a specific goal. It is not about having full power or authority over aides but rather taking the initiative and desiring to serve other people. A true leader desires to serve others, whether overtly or covertly, coaching and motivating a team to achieve an inspiring goal. As George Bernard Shaw stated, “progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” and that is what defines a transformative leader. Transformative leadership is about being open to new ways when the old ways are not working out efficiently.
According to Richard L. Daft in his book Management, a transformative leader is one who is able to bring about creativity and change. A transformational leader does this by inspiring followers, promoting positive values, creating positive relationships, and empowering followers. James Burns, one of the first researchers to present the idea of transformational leadership, described it as a “process in which leaders and followers make each other advance to higher levels of morale and motivation (1978).” I strive to be a transformational leader who takes great care to act as a positive role model, to act as a visionary, and to demonstrate genuine concern for the needs and feelings of my followers, and to motivate and inspire my followers.
Transformational Leadership- a leadership style where a leader motivates and empowers the organization or company to success. This type of leadership is often seen in the Presidential role. Some examples of transformational leaders in Africa are Doctor Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela and Aliko Dangote.
