According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word authentic means to be genuine or real (Merriam-Webster.com, 2004, p47). Also, according to Merriam-Webster, the term leadership is defined as having the capacity to lead (merriam-webster.com, 2018). Thus, authentic leadership is the act of someone leading others by utilizing his or her own individual style. “Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership. They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference than they are in power, money, or prestige for themselves.” (George, 2004, p.12). While at my first job, I was exposed to authentic leadership at its best. My boss was a retired master sergeant who believed in equality and respect. One day, while picking up trash, I turned around and noticed him helping me clean up the mess. After we finished the task, I kindly asked him why he had helped me. In other words, internalized moral perspective simply means to do the right thing. Having morals is nothing less than a mandatory requirement in order to become a nurse, much less a leader. In the quest for effective leadership, one must consistently and continuously possess and demonstrate a set of ethical standards throughout his or her own practice. This is done in the pursuance of being found trustworthy, unbiased, and fair to his or her followers.
