According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word authentic means to be genuine or real (Merriam-Webster.com, 2004, p47). Also, according to Merriam-Webster, the term leadership is defined as having the capacity to lead (merriam-webster.com, 2018). Thus, authentic leadership is the act of someone leading others by utilizing his or her own individual style. “Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership. They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference than they are in power, money, or prestige for themselves.” (George, 2004, p.12). While at my first job, I was exposed to authentic leadership at its best. My boss was a retired master sergeant who believed in equality and respect. One day, while picking up trash, I turned around and noticed him helping me clean up the mess. After we finished the task, I kindly asked him why he had helped me. A person 's ethical beliefs are shaped by their religion, culture, family values, and life experiences. It is imperative for nurse leaders to go beyond examining their own ethical and moral beliefs. They must educate themselves on concepts, theories, and frameworks to effectively deal with ethical dilemmas, questions of morality, and legal issues. This is important not only for their own well-being but also because they are role models for all staff within their organization.
According to Dr. Karlene Kerfoot, “research tells us that the leadership traits of the person in charge work either as a magnet to attract, retain, and inspire or as a force that repels” (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25) and in support of this statement she makes reference to the fact that many persons go to work for a specific company with enthusiasm and eagerness and ultimately leave disappointed because of the management. “People are generally hungry for personalized leadership that speaks to their hearts”, says Dr.Kerfoot and this type of leadership motivates them to accomplish task and complete projects they deem difficult or impossible (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25)
Leadership is derived from the Latin word laedere, which roughly translates as “to show the way” and if someone were to look it up in the dictionary, it would come up as “the position of a leader, the ability to lead, and direction.” However, for some this word can be arguable because everyone thinks differently. Leadership or leader itslef can be described or defined as someone promoting good character, a trustworthy person as well as a person who has dedication and takes responsibility for not only him or herself but also takes responsibility for the people surrounding them.
In a firm, management and leadership are important and needed. Leadership and management are similar. Actually, leadership and management are totally different. The leadership would influence the firm. The leader would have difference leadership styles to lead the subordinate.
Leaders, an individual that people look up to for direction, inspiration, and guidance in life. Passion, influential, reliability, a vision, etc. These traits along with many more, are the things that make leaders great and successful. Everyone has different personality traits that make us capable of being leaders in this world and I learned that throughout this course. Everyone is different, whether good or bad, ethical or unethical, everyone has a leadership style all their own. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader (John Quincy Adams).”
They provide morals and are used to form what is the best and right action to do. Ethics can be controversial, but the nurse must keep in mind the patient and their morals. The nurse must understand the different positions of what is good, what is right, what ought to be done, the complexity of moral judgment and the obligations required of them (Barbara A. Carper, 1978). Ethics represent the norms of society. Unethical actions endanger social judgment, the patient, and personal morality. Learning personal values as well as moral judgments through actions and personal beliefs helps form ethics in the nursing learning.
To become an authentic leader means to bring “people together around a shared purpose and empowers them to step up and lead authentically in order to create values for all stakeholders,” (xxxi). Bill George has identified the following five dimensions every authentic leader should encompass:
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
I was a business manager of a utility company for about twelve years. I was responsible for four employees and the operation of the office. This was a job that I never thought I would leave, I loved it, and I looked forward to coming to work every day. Due to a situation out of my control and politics the administration changed and I could not support something that I did not believe in or feel was a good ethical practice. My leadership position provided me a variety of tasks, no one day was the same, I found the job challenging and but at the same time satisfying. The one practice that I maintained while in this position was that I wanted to lead by example. I would not ask an employee to do something that I would not do myself. I feel strongly that this practice was necessary to maintain the respect of my subordinates. Being a smaller office, I did maintain a personal relationship with those that worked for me, we built a strong team together. The old system of management has undergone many changes within the last century. An employee once performed the assigned job duties during the allotted hours and then went home. Now employees are encouraged to grow, give input, and to contribute for the good of the organization. There is a plethora of information for leaders to learn why and how to grow personally thus allowing the organization to grow as well. This new emerging leader is a transformational leader.
In 2014, Hannah, Avolio, and Walumbwa theorized that “authentic leaders are driven by internalized regulatory processes in the pursuit of an integrated set of goals…” This statement supports the various proposals that the authentic leader is inherently motivated (Hannah, Avolio & Walumwa 2014).
I believe true leadership is a quality many aspire to have, and only a few truly obtain, because in order to become a leader you must first learn to follow.
