There are various displays of leadership and role modeling in the Shakespearean play 'Romeo and Juliet'. When one hears the term leader, there may be some confusion around what qualities a leader may or may not possess. One should also avoid confusing a good leader with a good role model, because although a good role model may possess similar qualities, there are a few qualities that are required in order to be a strong leader. Two very good examples of the contrasts between a good leader and a good role model are the characters Friar Lawrence and the Prince of Verona, in Romeo and Juliet. The Friar may very well be a good role model, however many would likely hesitate to classify him as a good leader. Just the same, the Prince of Verona would be classified by many as a strong leader. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model. (4.1.68-76) The Friar did not take into account the dangers of his actions. Thus making the Friar an inefficient leader. However, returning to the point of the Friar's intentions, one could still consider him to be a good role model of benevolence, good will, and kind-heartedness, as well as a good religious role model. In the first example, although irresponsible, the Friar hoped the marriage would bring the two families together. In the second example, the Friar understood Juliet's predicament, and was only trying to help her, as she was upset enough to harm herself.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. The forbidden wedding of Romeo and Juliet could not have happened without the Friar. First of all, the Friar unwisely agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet, even though he knows it will cause later problems. In the beginning, the Friar thinks that "...this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households' rancor to pure love." (II iv 91-92) This shows that the Friar has a slight hope of their marriage possibly working. Therefore, he decides to marry the two lovers. However, as time moves on, the Friar lets on that he has regrets about the marriage. The Friar feels that "too swift arrives as tardy as too slow." (II vi 15) In other words, the Friar means that he senses that this whole wedding is happening too fast and starts to have second thoughts. If the Friar had thought this important decision clearly through, he may have prevented many future tragedies. Therefore, the Friar knows all along that, "These violent delights have violent ends." (II vi 9) The Friar knew that this is an impossible situation, which if made possible by himself will without a doubt end up in tragedy in one way or another. Under these conditions, as the Friar predicts, Romeo sinks into a deep depression; as a result of the fact that he cannot see his wife. Similarly, Juliet becomes depressed and is grieving over the truth of her and Romeo's separation. Without the Friar the two lovers would not have been married, which would have prevented both depressions and future problems to come.
William Shakespeare composed the tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the 16th century. This play vividly portrayed the banned love between the heirs of two families. Spoiler alert, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves in the end. Every person in Romeo and Juliet held responsibility for their death. The Friar is portrayed as an innocent person, who has committed no wrong doings, but this is not the case. The Friars biggest mistake was to marry Romeo and Juliet without their parents consent. Although this is not a crime, it is morally wrong. The friar also committed a crime by trying to make Romeo and Juliet run away, but this plan ultimately leads to doom. He also abandoned Juliet when he heard that the watch were coming, and let her kill herself. Although the reason why he committed these wrong doings was to unite a family and save a couples life, what he did was wrong.
Friar Lawrence is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet. If he had not been so irresponsible and careless the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet would never have happened. Friar Laurence's plan had many flaws. If he has thought through his plan to fake juliets death and had been careful executing his plan, this tragedy would not have occurred. Friar Lawrence should have delivered the letter directly to Romeo. He also should have not left Juliet alone when he heard the watch coming.
In this play, ironically, it is the role models of the young lovers that are largely responsible for the tragedy. The Capulets should have cared more about what Juliet wanted instead of forcing their own will while the Nurse ought to have been a better counsel and motherly figure to Juliet, especially in difficult times when she was needed the most.. But mostly, the Friar needed to be more responsible and make better judgements regarding the young couple whom he influenced a great deal more than he imagined at the time. These faults are merely part of human nature but are nonetheless avertable. Shakespeare does a great job of showing that no one, from respectable upper-class parents to holy priests, is perfect and anyone can heavily influence the lives of those around them.
In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo plays the role of the tragic hero. In the play Romeo is an extremely impulsive individual. and makes his decisions without considering the consequences. Romeo makes terrible decisions that end up killing him. What Romeo Failed to see is that every decision he made had an even worse reaction.

His first bad decision was the one to marry Romeo and Juliet and he knew that himself, but he still went through with it; “These violent delights have violent ends...,” (Shakespeare, 778). Despite being wary of the outcome, he showed he mostly wanted the glory of being the one to “unite the families” by marrying Romeo and Juliet. He seemed to disapprove of the marriage, but when the thought of him being able to stop the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets surfaced, he jumped at the chance, perhaps due to the religious and social pressures to “do something great or important.” After getting himself into a enormous mess, Friar’s solutions are risky and not quite thought through, like in the line, “And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy,” when he gives Juliet the potion (Shakespeare, 817). His willingness to take that risky option while it’s not involving him directly shows some of his selfishness and cowardice. Maybe if he had different character traits, he would have shown reluctance to let Juliet attempt that dangerous route and fully considered the options and outcomes, therefore possibly preventing numerous deaths. Juliet assures the Friar that she will go to extreme measures to be with Romeo even if it means that she might die. The first irresponsible move Friar Laurence makes in this situation is advising Juliet to take a sleeping potion in which she will be asleep for forty-two hours and will be perceived to be dead by her friends and family. The meaning of responsibility is having the obligation to take care of someone. Encouraging Juliet to take part in this risky plan is already irresponsible enough especially knowing that many things could go wrong if the plan isn’t executed cautiously. This definitely does not prove that he cares for her safety. Another irresponsible aspect of Friar’s action is that he does not stop to view the negative impact that this plan could result in. This scheme is exceedingly risky, to begin with and many things could go wrong, so the fact that the Friar disregards the possibility of the plan going awry is
The Friar is aware that a backlash could occur if the union is discovered as Juliet is already distrusted by her father who believes she is disobedient. However, he chooses to wed the couple in the hope that a successful marriage could reconcile the hatred between the families. Wishfully, he says that the “alliance may so prove to turn your households rancour to love.” The uncertainty of the word “may” points toward the theme of forbidden love, as their “alliance” could also cause further warring. Furthermore, “rancour” and “love” reinforce and foreshadowing the themes of hatred and reconciliation, respectively. Friar Laurence is also responsible for laying the plan to comatose Juliet in order to preserve their marriage and save her from Paris. Having to go to extreme lengths to ensure Juliet’s happiness reinforces the idea of forbidden love, especially considering she is so young and inexperienced.
