Kurt Vonnegut once said "I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.'" He wanted us to take a moment and be happy, sit and realize that we are happy and enjoy it. People can be happy for many reasons, winning the lottery, a nice fish and chips or watching the clock strike five on a workday, but most of all people are happy based on the types of lives they lead, lives governed by ethics. If I were to pick a role model, it would have to be Kurt Vonnegut Jr. author extraordinaire because I appreciate his humanist thinking and his general ideas about ethics. I realized as I am writing this paper that while Kurt Vonnegut Jr. would be an excellent role model, I never met the man while he was alive and would not especially know what he would do when an ethical conundrum presented itself. Also, he has passed away so it would be impossible to ever find out. On the other hand, my father is not passed away, and I can ask him if I have an ethical problem.
I chose my father as my ethical role model because out of everyone who has taught me throughout my life, I think he tried to impart the most. One time, right after the 2008 presidential election, he told me that he "raised me to be a democrat", which is an interesting statement for two reasons because 1: as a Catholic family, the Church requires we be Republicans and 2: because he never told me to be a democrat. This anecdote is important because it shows how my dad taught me about things indirectly, through things he says or does to others, but not with just commands to me. He taught me life is not just about right and wrong but it's about helping people and experiencing new things.

...cal code and begin to learn from them. This would be a distressing situation because somebody would be mistakenly choose an incorrectly model and then they would carry on in an unethical lifestyle, which is detrimental to themselves, those around them and society at large. This is one of the reasons it's important for children to have strong moral figures in their lives, so they can learn a proper moral code before deciding how they will live their lives.
My father has given me the moral code I live by and I'm grateful to him for that, without it I'd just be a street urchin with no ethical sense of right or wrong. I'm glad that he gave this to me. Ethics are important to keep society together and so my father helped me integrate into society successfully as a newcomer to the adult world. I have the tools to make my own decisions and hopefully they will be wise.
Just about anybody can be a good role model. One may ask what a good role model is, and how a good role model dif...
Some of the key ideas that Hartman discussed about in this article were revolved around the concept of teaching and defining what a good character is. Hartman started off his article by talking about generosity, honesty, courage and respect. Hartman also talked about how business ethics courses can help improve students’ character by helping them think about their values (Hartman 69). Hartman also discussed about how many people are “sincere but they are not courageous” (Hartman 73). Moreover, Hartman’s goal was to help encourage students “to consider their strengths and limitations, their opportunities, and what they can and cannot learn to enjoy” (Hartman 72) and “help students understand the importance of that choice and not make it thoughtlessly” (Hartman 79). Hartman answered if good character is teachable throughout his article. As Hartman stated, “We can begin to teach our students the necessary self-knowledge and self-control by encouraging them to reflect on their assumptions about what will make them happy.” (Hartman 71). Hartman illustrated that an “important function is to provide help for students to understand the language of right and wrong, of virtues and vices” (Hartman 75). Hartman believes that a “good character is therefore a matter not only of doing the right thing but also having the right desires and emotions” (Hartman
Every day, in a plethora of different situations, virtually every person has to make a multitude of decisions regarding how to interact with other people. Despite many centuries of intense study and theorizing by some of the most brilliant philosophers in the world, there is no single consensus on how people should choose to act towards others. What have been developed, however, are different systems of ethics describing idealized ideas of how human beings should treat themselves, treat others, and what they should strive for both personally and for society as a whole. In addition, many people cobble together their own personal systems of ethics based on personal experience and various degrees of formal ethical education.
My father is my biggest role model and always will be. He has taught me everything I know.
In my opinion, parents are the result of a young person’s actions. Parents or caregivers have the biggest influence in their children's lives. I think that the way you raise your children will reflect who they become and their morals. Growing up, a child learns by copying what their parents do for example for me, I got the habit of biting my nails from my mother. Cooking, cleaning, driving, are taught to us by our parents, therefore; children learn to carry on those skills they learn and use them in the future.
There is two type of role models. The one that you look up to and the second type is the role model that you want to learn from and do the total opposite of that person. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The main character is Arnold Spirit Jr. who goes by the name ( Junior) . It is based on Sherman Alexie childhood but mostly his life in high school. Junior is a role model but in his own way , his actions show qualities of what would be called a bad role model, but his actions afterwards show otherwise. He is a young man who has a huge heart who is a good role model, Because he has control, preserves ,and he cares about others, but the strongest qualities out of all are he has hope, unlike
Back in the day when I was very little, I remember that my dad used to take care of me. He would never let me run around the house when glass could off break and hurt me. As I kept growing up my father started to give more freedom but also gave me more responsibilities; like he wanted me to do the chores of the house, not all of them but some. I knew they were not mine to do but I still help. When I went off to college and I had to do all by myself, I realize that my father did good on making me do my laundry, chores and etc., when I was young. Besides I knew that I had to do my chores for me to go out with friends. Although I had this kind of responsibilities at a young age I can say that it helped in life. But because some parents overprotective their children and they are not exposing to real life, children might not know how to function in society when their parents die.
Who comes to mind when thinking about who the best role model is? Is it a friend? A sibling? Possibly a parent? For me, When thinking about who the best role model to have is, one person in particular comes to mind. She has been there my entire life, has seen me through thick and thin, and always supports me in everything that I do. The person that I consider to be the best role model is my older sister, Kelly. To this day my sister and I aren't joined at the hip, and I don't speak to her everyday, but my sister is still one of my closest friends. Growing up we saw things differently, but as I grew up and saw my sister go through life with a confidence still unrivaled, I realized she was the one person who I could count on to pick me up when
In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, "the mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom." I believe that statement because of experiences I’ve had with my own mother. I have learned more about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20 years my mother has taught me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of compassion, thoughtfulness, and generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me throughout life.
My father was always there for me, whether I wanted him to be or not. Most of the time, as an adolescent trying to claim my independence, I saw this as a problem. Looking back I now realize it was a problem every child needs, having a loving father. As hard as I tried to fight it, my dad instilled in me the good values and work ethic to be an honest and responsible member of society. He taught me how to be a good husband. He taught me how to be a good father. He taught me how to be a man. It has been 18 years since my father’s death, and I am still learning from the memories I have of him.
The first question that comes to my mind when faced with a moral dilemma is: “What would my father do?” For my entire life, I have looked up to my father and will probably continue to do so for the rest of my life. Many of my personal morals can be contributed back to the lessons and examples my father has provided consistently. The basis for the majority of values I hold is the idea of respecting everyone. Underneath this umbrella are honoring my word, being reliable, and never intentionally harming someone –physically or emotionally- unless in self-defense.
My grandma is my role model because she has accomplished so much and been through so much in her life. She is a very beautiful person, but very stubborn in what she believes and wants. Its almost impossible to get her to change her mind. She is always telling me how proud she is of me and has pretty high expectations of me. My mom is also a role model for me because she had a rough childhood and after she started a family she went back to college she is still attending college now, she gives me motivation to never give up and reminds my of how good my life is
Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model.
I think the most influential people in my life are my parents. They are always there when I need them and sometimes when I think that I don't. They have taught me the value of honesty. I feel that they are the soul reason why I turned out the way I did. I don't drink or do drugs because they have taught me they are wrong and unhealthy. I was taught to respect my self as well as others.
I always think to myself, “What would I do if I didn’t have a father like him?” I think about it and then I say, “I would be in the cracks, not doing anything because there is no one here to keep me going and to keep me motivated.” My dad is an amazing cool person to me because he shows me that no matter what struggles he faces in his life or what happens to him, he always gets out of them and he has me and my mom to help him.
