What does it mean to be a leader? There are many different ideas about what it means to be a good leader and what the leadership means. In a simple explanation, leadership is a technique that an individual influence a group of people to achieve a common goal. A good leader can be a supervisor, manager or a business owner. Leaders are people who have expertise in achieving goals, no matter what their job titles are. Leadership is about coping with change. In a modern age we live, especially in the twentieth century, “more companies are looking for people with great leadership skills” because they can solve problems (2015, P. 13). I believe that core values are essential to construct my character and personality as a leader. My core values that I believe are as follow: 1- Honesty & Integrity Honesty and integrity are the two most important characteristics for leadership success in any work place. The foundation of any relationship is honesty. To be a good leader, one must be honest. My goal is to create a workplace that every people can trust me and I can trust them so that we work together for a common goal. I would like to be a trusted leader because I am sure this characteristic will bring Done Right and On Time result in my career. 2- Self-Confidence In my idea, leaders without self-confidence are not actually leaders. To be a great leader there are many qualities you must have. The hard part is actually knowing what qualities you need, because their are different types of leaders. For example you might be a business leader. The basis of good leadership is honorable character and selfless service to the organization. Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
The thought of that the way leadership is being made based on characteristics is called, “Trait theory of leadership”. The leader as a person needs to be creative, original, and inspired behind the movement of the company. By doing this it can further help the leader as a person have new ideas and create more contributions to the organization the leader is in charge of and while having these characteristics they should be able to be organized, dependable, and be an achiever. Their personality should also be talkative, very social, and outgoing; this will help them move forward the most. Finally, another point that helps me from my definition of a leader is most of all a leader needs to be trustful, tolerant, kind and this will help them be a great person to get along with. Without trust in the leader nobody will follow someone who cannot be trusted because the leader will look as if they will not accomplish
