Leadership Theories Definition of leadership and what makes a good leader The very basic definition of leadership is the action or ability to lead a group. It is also the process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others and directs it towards the achievement of goal. What makes a good leader? There are some characteristics that represent a good leader, they are: • Self-awareness: leaders with high self-awareness understand their strengths and weaknesses. They usually make choices based on their own judgements. They demand an absolute and authoritarian control over an organization. Autocratic leadership can be useful sometimes, especially when there is a decision that needs to be made quickly and without discussing or consulting it with other group members or subordinates. Some tasks require a strong leadership in order to get things done quickly and efficiently. The negative side of autocratic leadership is that some leaders who abuse this leadership style are generally perceived as bossy, authoritative, and dictatorial. This could lead to dislike and resentment from other group members. They also often make decisions without consulting their group members or subordinates, thus, people may not be able to follow their direction because of different point of views. This leadership style also commonly results in lack of innovative and creative solution to a problem. Eventually, this could hurt the overall group
Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed.
Participative leadership theory: In this leadership style, a leader turns his group for input ideas to take a decision fairly take by himself. Its not autocratic type somewhat its indicate democratic leadership style (Participative Leadership Theory and Decision-making Style). Although, there have been cases where autocratic leaders and laissez fair leaders have been successful, this does not mean that these leaders were the best leaders. It just means that they were able to achieve power through the cost of their subordinates. In this cases most of the time the subordinates are not happy with their leader. Even after their success there is no doubt that a democratic leader is the best leaders because this styles leads to a “higher productivity, more contribution from group members as well as higher group morale(Cherry).”A democratic leader, with the five golden rules, is able to guide and inspire others through his example, to change for their benefit. A democratic leader seeks the best for his subordinates and that is the reason why his subordinates will follow him.
Leadership is the ability that someone has to motivate, guide and empower a group of people, in the particular case the personnel of an organization, in order to achieve specific goals.
Assertiveness – Leaders are not afraid to let others know where they stand, confront others on their mistakes, set high expectations, and demand better performance.
While there are many theories as to what makes an effective leader, The Self-Determination Theory shows us that allowing employees, the freedom to make decisions that directly impact the way they work gives them a sense of trust and self-worth. This confidence then allows them to work efficiently for their leaders who have helped give them this sense of enthusiasm in their jobs. There is a relationship between intrinsic motivation and effective leadership. Building confidence and self-esteem will turn isolated employees into passionate employees who are dedicated to their jobs, while turning them into leaders as well.
The extreme leadership style of the Authoritarian can have a negative effect on team members. A characteristic of this leader is one who makes all the decisions and passes the directives to subordinates who are expected to carry these out under very close supervision. Because open communication is vital to any project, these perceptions can hurt team performance.
I define Leadership as a person’s ability to guide or shepherd a herd through/to a common destination – a destination of common beliefs. The leader possesses qualities/traits that can persuade others to follow them because they believe and trust them – regardless of their “human” traits and imperfections. The herd trusts that they will stay on course to the common destination.
From my studies and observations an autocratic leader is less likely to use the opinions or suggestions of others; in fact they could be a working dictator. They are very hands on and believe their way is the only way. Autocratic leaders are normally inflexible. Working with or for this type of person could make for a very long day. (Lewin & Lippitt, 1938) (Vroom & Yetton, 1973).
Leadership is defined in many different ways. In the Meriam-Webster dictionary it’s defined as a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc. The time when a person holds the position to lead, and lastly the power or ability to lead other people. To me, the definition of leadership means having the confidence, integrity, and ability to lead by example and do what’s right, so others will follow.

Autocratic I (A1). The leader takes a decision completely at his discretion without the knowledge or consent of the team members in this style of leadership. This style of decision making is possible only in cases where there is not a lot at stake with the out come of this decision, when the employees’ decision is not exactly crucial for the outcome of the project, or when a leader thinks decision can be arrived at based on the information at hand and thinks any additional information isn’t needed from the team members to take a good and calculated decision.
Autocratic leaders possess total control of all of the decisions and rarely take input from their employees. It is a totalitarian form of management. In the past autocratic leadership was

The type of leadership usually depends on the personality of an individual. Some individuals believe in making all the decisions without having to consult anyone. The style, in this case, becomes dictatorial since the decisions made have to be accepted without being challenged. There are those who value the opinions of others and believe that everyone can contribute something when it comes to making decisions. This form of leadership boosts creativity and innovation, as individuals feel more appreciated.
