Personality Traits and Leadership Styles of Great Leaders Great “leaders are made, not born” (Skrhak, 2014). A great leader motivates and influences a team to reach seemingly impossible goals. A great leader has a compelling sense of purpose and duty. Great leaders portray excellence and in return they expect no less than excellence. An effective and great leader is not defined by only personality, but by their values, ability and skills, and leadership style. Leaders posses a variety of personality traits, but there are only a few traits that define a great leader. • Honesty – Leaders display integrity and sincerity in all their actions. • Passion – Leaders live, eat, sleep, and breathe their work. • Competence – Leaders base their actions on reason and moral principles. They do not make decisions based on their emotions. • Inspiration – Leaders influence others by encouragement, sharing experiences, and challenging others. • Intelligence – Leaders are knowledgeable about their surroundings. • Courage – Leaders are willing to take risks and have the perseverance to accomplish goals, no matter how difficult or stressful the situations become. • Humility – Leaders exhibit confidence, but know when it is time to throw in the towel and move on to other possible solutions. • Innovation – Leaders show creativity by creating new and better ideas and solutions. • Assertiveness – Leaders are not afraid to let others know where they stand, confront others on their mistakes, set high expectations, and demand better performance. • Senses of humor – Leaders are optimistic, yet warm and charismatic. This leadership style is beneficial in situations where a quick decision is necessary. The downside to this type of leadership is people who tend to use an autocratic leadership style are seen as controlling and dictatorial.
