Leadership is defined in many different ways. In the Meriam-Webster dictionary it’s defined as a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc. The time when a person holds the position to lead, and lastly the power or ability to lead other people. To me, the definition of leadership means having the confidence, integrity, and ability to lead by example and do what’s right, so others will follow. To me leading comes naturally because people have always looked up to me. My earliest memory of leadership was the summer of my sophomore year in high school. We always had summer workouts leading up to football camp, which lead to our season. My earliest memory of a leader was my mom. My mom has been my leader my entire life. Being a single mother, working multiple jobs where she helped people and they looked up to her to see if they are doing right or not was huge. I’d often go to work with her on the weekends and see that or I’d hear phone conversations of her talking to people leading and guiding them to stay on the right track. I knew my team wouldn’t get far without me being a leader. They liked to win championships, but didn’t have a championship mentality. So, I knew if I stepped up that could all change and we could have undefeated seasons, and go to the championship games and we did. Something my mom did, which was very huge was teach me how to be a better leader being more vocal, not being afraid to let them know they can do better, an encourager, but most importantly she taught me in order to be a good leader you must know how to also follow. Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. Leaders come forth depending on the kind of situation, in which they are need. This type of leadership is typically known as “situational leadership,” where the key concept is every situation is different, so each situation requires a specific, unique leader. For a person to be a great leader, one does not have to necessarily assume a “bossy” persona, which is stereotypically characterized with all leaders, but being a leader based on listening. Being this background leader is known to many as, “servant leadership.” Servant and situational leadership is how I can characterize my leadership style so far since I have joined the student leadership community at Hillwood High School.

Leadership can mean many different things and often the definition varies from person to person. The definition of leadership that I strive for centers around being who I am. Before someone can be a leader they have to know who they are. Therefore; Leadership is becoming the person you want to be and leading other people to become who they want to be. An example of a leader in my own life would be the man who use to be Pastor at my church. I was a lost soul before he came to my church. He took the time to speak to me and explain to me the joys and privileges of being saved through Christ. He helped mold me into the young lady I am today. Through his leadership I was able to become one step closer to becoming a leader also. As a leader I want to impact people’s lives and help them become who they strive to be.
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
An example of my leadership experience was when I joined the program called Big Brother Big Sister, in which I became a mentor to Faviola, a shy fifth-grade girl. I collaborated with her for almost a year, so we have many things in common. We both were non-English speakers when we first came to the United States. Also, we were both newcomers as we started school in America, and we both went to McKinley Elementary School. Thus, she improved her English while I was her mentor. To improve her English, we would talk in English, and I would correct her grammar if she said something incorrect. When she is around strangers, she is not as nervous as the first time we met. I influenced her in a positive way because she wasn’t comfortable around me when
I believe that some individuals possess the qualities of being a leader but they may not be apparent initially. Over time, with maturity and specific challenges, those qualities are given the opportunity to be called upon and challenged. Being a leader is important in everything that you do and has always come naturally for me. A huge accomplishment that has marked my transition into adulthood is being recognized as a leader throughout many of my extra-curricular activities. I have been recognized as a leader on my softball team, lacrosse team, and with the Young life Christian organization in our community.
By being a leader, I can give the youth knowledge that will help them in daily life. For example, teaching the children values and characteristics of being a leader and not a just a follower; also equip the kids, to have dreams and goals in life. To help them accomplish those dreams and grow within society and being determined but cautious in what he or she is going to do in the class. People with different backgrounds become leaders based on different reasons. For example, I take pride in being a learning coach and big sister for my five younger brothers who are all home schooled and I believe they are who shaped me into being a leader within myself and for them.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
People always have others who look to them for guidance and look to them to be a role model. This is what we call a leader. A leader must have people who follow them. Without people who follow leaders there would be no such thing as a leader. I have had the opportunity to be a leader in my life. This experience made me realize who I am and who I wanted to be. Having people look to me as a role model really made me look at who I am as a person and really try to become the best person that I can be. When you have small children looking towards you, you have to be the best person that you can be.
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
Throughout my entire life I have been given many opportunities to experience what it is like to be a leader. I have experienced Participative Leadership the most through playing on a high school football team, at my previous job where I was the leader for my shift and being apart of groups in high school and college. Through all of these experiences despite many setbacks It has ultimately made me a better leader by: having more self confidence, learning from my mistakes and build to upon them, being more a more dependable leader, being fair to everyone not just individuals, and allowing the chance for everyone in the group/team to participate and voice their opinion rather than tuning them out. I have not had too many leaders in my life. I have only had one job for about a year so all the leaders in my life have been either family or teachers. First off the main leaders in my life have been my parents. I know that is what most people say but it is the truth in my situation. I have learned a lot from them about leadership. The main thing I learned from them is to always respect others and believe in yourself. This is key because if I do not respect others then nobody will respect myself. I must treat others how I would like to be treated. Also being myself is important because everyone is different and the uniqueness is what people are attracted to.
