There are many definitions and theories about what constitutes a great leader. Some say that a leader is someone who is capable of inspiring and motivating others to change. Other says a leader is someone who does not rely on their title or power to lead, but instead can use his/her personal power to guide and lead others in an effective manner. While the definition of a great leader can vary depending on whom the question is asked, there is no doubt that these definitions have some common ground. This type of leader relies on his/her power in order to dominate and control others. Through power this type of leader engages in a virtual dictatorship where there is little acknowledgement of the efforts of subordinates. One great example of an autocratic leader is Hitler. Hitler dominated through power and fear; “Hitler believed that his decisions were always right and that nobody could have better knowledge about something than he held (Hitler info site).” His authority over his subordinates was clear. He has set roles for individuals and everyone was well aware of what their responsibility was. Although many consider Hitler as a great leader because he was able to influence many people with his charismatic personality, his autocratic style was flawed. Unfortunately an autocratic leader is only able to exert fear into his subordinates and not respect. This type of leader does not inspire others to change; he forces them, and the change does not result in a long term change. Only a democratic leader can fit the definition give by Ken Blanchard, he said that in the past a leader was a boss. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Ever since humanity created the idea of civilization, there has been an immense need for great leadership and it takes a remarkable person to be a leader adequate enough to handle all the nuances of leadership on such a grand scale. It requires a person so apt, that humanity has seldom seen any people virtuous and intelligent enough to rule over people so effectively as to create negligible problems. While numerous romanticize the position of a remarkable leader, it is a position that comes with copious downfalls and would, consequently, only be a life worth pursuing and living to a sparse few, seeing that, in the end, while those who lead nobly and intelligently may receive honor to the highest magnitude and a legacy that will last forever, the life of leadership doesn’t motivate a life of happiness. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. Leadership is all about power and influence. Leaders use their power to get goals accomplished. A simple distinction is between two forms of power. Socialized power is used to benefits others and fulfill their needs. The other form is personalized power, power that is used strictly for personal gain. These two forms are not mutually exclusive, a leader can use their power to benefit society but also gain personally. However, leaders can become intoxicated by their power, engaging in unjust behavior simply because they have the power to and will get away with it. This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. He provides intriguing insight about leaders and emphasizes the integrity and authenticity that such people carry. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
Finding a great leader is to find a leader who can find a balance in the order things. To be able motivate, to inspire, and foster a purpose and belief within each individual based on what the leader believes and the willing for each individual to take action based on the inspiration. To be an effective leader, the leader must inspire a each individual he or she intends to lead, in order to inspire and reach the full potential of an effective leader, the leader must realize and practice the concept of the three rings, “The Why”, “The How” and “The What” of the “Golden Circle”.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. Leadership is an important part of society, we must have leaders within our society in order for it to function, as teachers we are expected daily to be leaders to our students, their parents, and even the teachers around us. Some believe that leadership is a learned trait and others believe it’s a trait that we are born with, but the way that we see leadership should be multidimensional, with different levels and different approaches. For me leadership is based on the persons traits, skills, the ability to be authentic and the ability to be a servant while leading always thinking about others. There is no one true definition to leadership, although, Webster's Dictionary defines leadership as "the power or ability to lead other people”. I truly believe to each is his own. It is my opinion that leadership consist of various skills that are learned over time and mastered through experience. Leadership comes with hard work, commitment, the ability to view multiple perspectives along with the willingness to accept failure but also the perseverance to carry on. My personal philosophy of leadership has developed, matured and expanded from situations where I learned from other leaders I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and situations that have arose in my home life.

Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal.
