There is no one true definition to leadership, although, Webster's Dictionary defines leadership as "the power or ability to lead other people”. I truly believe to each is his own. It is my opinion that leadership consist of various skills that are learned over time and mastered through experience. Leadership comes with hard work, commitment, the ability to view multiple perspectives along with the willingness to accept failure but also the perseverance to carry on. My personal philosophy of leadership has developed, matured and expanded from situations where I learned from other leaders I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and situations that have arose in my home life. When and if I am faced with new and unfamiliar challenges, I am …show more content…
I give him task and responsibilities to accomplish in regards to his younger brothers, such as giving him the task of making sure everyone plays nice and looking after everyone while outside, by setting these expectations and holding him accountable to these responsibilities he now understands what needs to be done and what is expected of him. Thus, when I ask the question “what is your job”? He responds “to take care of my brothers”. He has adapted and exceled with this method. This method has proven time and time again to work not only at home but also with my own solders in the workplace. As a squad leader, I feel it is also important to lead by example, so if I receive a task I will complete it with my squad as a time rather than giving another one of my solider that same order. Effective communication is also a skill I believe is a must, we must have good listening skill with the ability to discuss any topic, idea or concern and reach one goal or solution as a team. Once a solution is agreed on it is my duty as a leader to assign responsibilities/task while empowering my solders, as well as observing and providing direction if needed because in fact the quality of leadership I provide is what determines the quality of our future
How do you define leadership? To me, leadership is leading a person, persons, or an organization; usually done with selflessness and the desire to achieve. Being a leader should be an honor and it should be something that somebody should have to earn. Throughout Animal Farm, by George Orwell, the qualities for leadership were both shown, and not shown, by Napoleon and Snowball. Both Snowball and Napoleon displayed some pros and cons of their leadership style.
A leadership theory is a clarification of some features of leadership; theories have practical importance as they are being used for better understanding, anticipating, and controlling successful leadership. Hence, the main principle of any theory is to inform practice(Lussier and Achua 2009). Leadership theories could be classified into eight main categories: Great man, trait, behavioral, contingency, Situational, Participative, Relationship , management (Cherry 2010).
Leadership, just like many other words, deems itself very subjective. Specifically, I believe that it defines itself by using yourself to better others. Examples like Beowulf and Lt. Colonel Hal Moore help identify leadership by setting examples for selflessness and bravery to his brothers of humanity. These men were able to efficiently lead for themselves and, more importantly, for their men by using heroism, altruistic integrity, and charm.
According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
Leadership is derived from the Latin word laedere, which roughly translates as “to show the way” and if someone were to look it up in the dictionary, it would come up as “the position of a leader, the ability to lead, and direction.” However, for some this word can be arguable because everyone thinks differently. Leadership or leader itslef can be described or defined as someone promoting good character, a trustworthy person as well as a person who has dedication and takes responsibility for not only him or herself but also takes responsibility for the people surrounding them.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
In this course, one of the main things I have learnt about is Stauffachers leadership context and principles. I have always understood what makes a good leader on the soccer field, its someone who takes responsibility and comes up with the goods when the team is struggling. However this course has allowed me to look more into the leadership qualities. The first is purpose, if you are leading you need to have a vision of what you want to achieve, if not it’s going to be difficult to see progress and keep motivated. I have found that if I don’t have a goal or vision to work towards I can become distracted easily and not perform as well. Leaders provide a sense of direction, they set goals, standards and bring a group closer together. On my soccer
My vision is to lead a family into a very successfully integrated life with the community and to help others in the community as an occupational safety officer. In order to best serve the community and my family as their servant-leader, I need to implement several areas of leadership development. First of all, I must have a good guide for decision-making. Taking in mind my vision, my decision-making should be most importantly focused on safety. All my decisions should take the physical safety of my family and co-workers into account. As an occupational safety officer, it is my responsibility to keep the company employees safe, as well as my family. I believe that is the most important aspect of my decision-making.
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
Defining leadership Leadership can be defined as the process of inspiring people with a shared vision and guiding them along the journey to achieve that vision while adapting to overcome challenges they may face along the way. Without people, there is no leadership. For leadership
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. The power point presentation explains leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context.
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win". A Leader is a person who has a strong personality and who has an ability to manage people and work. He is also the person who is able to direct people .Usually a leaders has a lot of attributes that
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
