In Lord of the Flies, leadership is shown in a variety of ways. Ralph is your ideal leader, he’s a good person, looks out for others, is selfless, and always has a goal in mind. Jack is a power hungry leader, bound and determined to have the power for one person, himself. He doesn’t care what happens to the others around him as long as long as he himself is happy. Simon is the spiritual leader, being all knowing and guided by what he feels from his surroundings. Piggy is the smart leader, thinking logically and with reason to achieve his goals, whilst still minding the others out of respect. All these leaders can be great in their own way, but it begs the question; what kind of leader am I? If I had to change my name and be a character in the novel, which character would he write me as? First we have to ask ourselves, what makes a good leader? Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. A good leader is someone who is very goal oriented, but bases their goals as a group, not on one’s own desires. A goal oriented leader would use language such as, “We need to get this done,” rather than, “I need this done”. You see this in the novel from Ralph when he is very insistent on keeping the signal fire lit, so as there can be a chance for rescue. Another great quality of a …show more content…
Ralph is the leader whom I feel I exemplifies my own traits the best and who I would be if I was a character in the novel. All of the things he does as a leader are things that I would do too. He is goal oriented and begins with the end in mind, which are attributes that will send his group, or any group for that matter, forward to their version of success. I can’t say that I would be perfect in the same situation, but I do know that having the same ideas as Ralph, I would have been able to get the tribe just as far, if not
Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
There are two different types of leaders: one who is loved by the people while acts responsibly and one who is feared by the people while being respected. These forms of leadership are shown throughout Lord of the Flies with Ralph and Jack. Niccolò Machiavelli uses The Prince to discuss how a leader should act and what leadership style is the most effective. Machiavelli clearly illustrates the types of leaders Ralph and Jack are by providing examples from ancient history.
In the book, Lord of the Flies, William Golding connects a disaster to a bunch of little English kids with the government and civics. There are at least five different ways William Golding connects the civics and the boys that were stranded on the island. Some of the events are reflected directly from our government. The Constitutional principles tie into the book a lot by the popular sovereignty, limiting powers, sharing powers, separation of powers, and protecting against tyranny. There are many different elements of the government which includes voting, symbol of government authority, and committees which are of the most important.
Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense of keeping his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability as an authority figure.
In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, leadership is one of the main important qualities. If I had to choose between Jack and Ralph to follow in the story, I would choose Ralph. Although he ended up struggling near the end of the story, I still found him to be a good leader.
Leadership is something that stands out in people; the ability to show courage, initiative, responsibility, and determination. Within a group, people tend to look for an individual with these traits to follow. The main protagonist in William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph who was immediately elected leader by a group of schoolboys who were stranded on the uninhabited island due to a plane crash, strives to recreate a civilized society to which he was accustomed to previously and apply it to the group of adolescents that accompany him. The qualities of leadership Ralph possess deemed him to be a fitted leader as they are demonstrated throughout the course of the novel by keeping order among the group, appearing confident in his leadership
There are always people who, in a group, come out with better qualities to be a leader than others. The strongest people however, become the greater influences which the others decide to follow. However, sometimes the strongest person is not the best choice. Authors often show how humans select this stronger person to give an understanding of the different powers that people can posses over others.
A leader is someone who leads a group, organization or country. Furthermore, a good leader is someone who has the ability to lead people effectively using only their positive leadership qualities. The novel Lord of the Flies illustrates that everyone possesses a variety of positive leadership qualities, as is evident through Jack, Ralph, Simon, and Piggy's different leadership qualities.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding is able to touch on the many aspects of our civilization through the various characters he creates. Leadership plays a very important role in the novel as it does in real life because the characters need to feel some sense of security in order for them to survive. The two main leaders in the story, through their similar and different leadership characteristics and objectives fight back and forth to gain the discipline of the other boys on the island and generally the power to make the decisions that they feel should be made. Both leaders, Jack and Ralph, experience leading the group in their own style, which is similar in their desire for control yet different pertaining to their leadership qualities and their objectives while on the island.
As you can see Ralph from Lord of the Flies is a good leader, because he can show the qualities of being brave, responsible, and selfless. He may not be successful in all ways because the boys left him to join Jack, though Jack manipulated the boys and wasn't a very good leader he just convinced the boys to join him. Jack isn't able to do things for the other boys, though Jack does things that he wants to do. Unlike Ralph who builds huts for the boys, not because he wants to but because he knows the boys need shelters. Though Ralph was still able to show the qualities of a good leader even though all of the boys didn't
For centuries, humans have tried to identify the personality traits that should belong to a successful leader. When Niccolo Machiavelli wrote The Prince in 1532, he addressed this issue. William Golding did the same in Lord of the Flies by illustrating Jack and Ralph’s grapple for power over the boys on the island. Jack’s generally violent and cruel disposition, as well as his lack of concern for the other boys and the island itself, makes it seem strange when he becomes chief. However, in Lord of the Flies, Machiavellian teachings can be used to explain Jack’s personality and rise to leadership on the island, as well as his creation of a totalitarian government.
A world without order will lead to disaster! Humans need order to help guide them into the right path. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, he uses symbolism to give us a hint of the savageness in all humans, civilized or not. In this book, boys are stuck on an island. While they were trying to make a structure of traditions they had at their home, the boys voted Ralph to lead. Jack wanted to lead, so over time, he persuaded the other boys from structure and reason to the savage mindset. This caused a separation between the boys and bloodshed. The conch is very important in the book because it represents leadership and order until, later on in the book when the conch shell’s authority weakened and nobody listened to the conch anymore, which shows how humans naturally dislike being told what to do and when to do it.
