Civilian and Army professionals both agree on a singular fundamental characteristic critical to achieving lasting success within their respective professions. This central characteristic is the daily embodiment of trust from organization members. Trust, is the most important of the Army Profession’s five essential characteristics for three reasons. First, it is the bonding agent for lasting internal organization relationships in all teams at all levels. Second, it is enhanced by the remaining four essential characteristics of the Army Profession. Finally, it protects against widespread skepticism by shielding relationships. Without the trust of Congress, the American people, the families of Soldiers, and Soldiers themselves, Army leaders will cease to be professionals. 1 (ADRP 1) as the foundational bedrock, some may argue that the most important characteristic of the Army Profession is honorable service. They would argue that without honorable service, the profession would lack crucial ethical components which enable mutual trust to exist. In actuality, honorable service is only achieved because trust has been given to Army professionals to consistently demonstrate character, competence, and commitment over time. Trust is already given. Honorable service only reinforces trust as service members uphold their constitutional oaths and make ethically right decisions. Congress puts great trust in Army professionals to prepare for and be ready to win the nation’s wars. Army professionals carry out their oaths and demonstrate honorable service. ADRP 1 points out that “Trust is essential for the successful accomplishment of every mission and endeavor.” This is why trust is the bedrock for honorable service and why it comes
Building trust takes time and the commander must earn it. It is a product of Army values and leading consistently with the Army leadership principles. Commanders earn trust or lose it through daily actions; thus, soldiers need to see their commanders upholding professionalism, integrity, and setting examples . Upon arriving at Hue, COL Hughes encouraged his commanders to do what they felt was needed to remove the communist troops from the city. Giving such authority to his commanders was a great step of trust that ultimately led to taking the city of Hue from the enemy.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief analysis of the United States Army’s organizational structure and its culture and how these two elements impact its workers, associates and affiliates. This paper will first examine the Army’s history, development and structure to highlight the origins of the Army’s culture. Secondly, a brief history of the Army’s organizational development will be followed by a close examination of its philosophy and supporting beliefs. Lastly, this paper will discuss the role of the Army’s leadership, their response to critical issues and the organizational structure of the Army. An analysis of the army’s top leaders will help the reader to understand the Army culture more thoroughly in the context of the Army’s organizational structure. More specifically this section of the paper will examine the Army leadership’s response to the current geo-political environment and other related issues. In conclusion, this paper hopes to highlight the Army’s overall functioning from an organizational standpoint and emphasize that idea that the Army is like a functional corporation. This will be accomplished by addressing various key questions throughout this text.
The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture. The Army currently has an ethical code embodied in the Army Values, which provides guidance to the individual and the organization. These values are universal across the Army, regardless of an individual’s personal background or religious morals.
Integrity is a core value, a key aspect, of the Army Values. Integrity of the soldier is looked upon highly, and is a valuable asset in any field of the army. Twenty four seven, meaning every hour of every day, a soldier should strive for integrity. Having integrity means your are trustworthy, and being trustworthy means that your NCO can depend on you to do the right thing at all times.
This paper will not bore with the definition of a profession. The United States Army is about more than words, it is about action. The action of over 238 years of tradition and service. The Army is a profession. A profession requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. A member of a profession must wholly commit himself and his skills to a calling which is entrusted by the public.
