What is business communication? To put it in simple forms communication is the mutual exchange of understanding, originating with the recipient. Communication needs to be effective in business, because communication is essence of management and is the basic functions of management which is Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing and Controlling. These tasks are key essentials with the job and cannot be performed well without effective communication. Business Communication is determined, the rules, regulations and policies of a company have to be communicated to people in and outside the world and is regulated by certain rules and norms. In earlier times, business communication was defined to paper-work, telephone calls etc. But now with the use of new technology, we have cell phones, video conferencing, and email communication to support this job better. This good effectiveness in business communication helps extend this job. Special skills that are needed in this profession is computer expertise in Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel which is usually a necessary skill. The management roles, which are interpersonal, informational, and decisional and the management functions, which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling all require communication.
Even if a graduate does not remember every single lesson taught in college, two strong, attractive qualities most graduates will likely come out with are enhanced skills in analytics and the ability to observe a task from beginning to end. Any college degree will increase a graduate’s marketability as a professional. A college degree not only makes you more marketable, instead a degree makes an individual “more marketable with a great range of various career options” (Carey 219). The advantage of being marketable it enables employers seek mostly college graduates than those without degrees when looking to fill their job positions. High school graduates tend to land on entry-level positions for non-skilled positions, whereas graduates with college degrees tend to qualify a greater of higher paying-entry and upper level position.
Before being enrolled in BA 101, my career path and perspective on majors were shaped by the organizations I was part. Although insightful, these organizations held a clear bias being geared towards Finance. Due to BA 101, I could discover my interest and skills, which inevitably led me to determine my major and minor while at McCombs. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. Before I started business communication class, I was very pessimistic about my communication abilities and my competence in rapidly evolving field of business communication. I was unconfident and nervous on my first day of class. I quickly realized that business communication is course that you will never learn until you energetically engage in various situations of listening and speaking. However, with all wonderful experiences of participation in the class, I personally felt that I gained a real experience without even working in an organization. Interactive nature of the class combined with wonderful teaching of Diana has really helped me to gain immortal knowledge. Through this course, I have refined my communication skills and strengthened my confidence to deliver professional standards and competencies emphasized by potential employers.
