Sports Team Research Paper

I have always pondered the question of what it takes to make any sports team great. I am talking from a first hand experience when it comes to answering this question. By working basketball clinics every Saturday, I promptly came to realize that it is not just talent that makes a splendid team. The ability to coach is detrimental in order for a team to reach new heights. The manager of the clinic saw my potential and invited me to be assistant coach for the girl’s varsity team at my old High School. I happily accepted the offer and it started to benefit life in more ways than I ever could have imagined.

It was not until mid-season that my pure strength of character was put to the test. The coach called an hour prior to game time and asked

me to take over the team because he had an emergency he had to attend to. I was hesitant to say yes, but he left me with no choice. I accepted the offer and hung up. My palms started pouring sweat and suddenly fear ran through my body. It was already nerve-wracking to speak in front of the team before games, but to lead the team to a win, as a coach, was completely terrifying.

Public speaking has always been a fear of mine, but I had no choice, but to conquer that fear and do the best I could. I took the initiative to fire up the team before the game. The speech did not go as well as I hoped, but I was proud of myself to say the least. It was an intense game throughout because it was one of the toughest opponents we had faced all year. Unfortunately, we ended up losing the game, but it was a game that went way beyond the win-loss column of what would be written in the newspaper the next day. It was a life-changing experience that taught me the importance of being a superb coach and how it ultimately affects the success of any sports team.
