In a world where students are often told to get the grade, memorize the answer, and have a surplus of technical abilities, it is extremely essential that they remember what soft skills are and why they are needed. Students need to remember that school is meant to prepare them for college along with a career. The issue in all of this arises when employers complain about the lack of soft skills that new employees are bringing into companies. The bigger issue being why were these students given diplomas as well as degrees, if they did not have what it takes to be in the work industry? Soft skills need to be better incorporated in learning curriculums, leading to higher college and career success rates.
The term soft skills holds an array of different skills such as: communication, conflict solving, teamwork, etc… . These skills are what ultimately generates a company or any business function successfully. Seitz provide examples of how schools are detaining the development of these skills in “Beyond the Classroom: Fostering Soft Skills in Pre-Professional LIS Organizations.” This article mentions, “A student may be able to take on leadership roles, perhaps within a group project, but they must ultimately be contained by the requirements of the syllabus.” A prime example of hypocrisy in the school system where students are encouraged to be creative, but are bound by monotonous requirements. The purpose having soft skills is thinking without restraints along with constituting innovation in any career field. Schools should stop bounding students in their unimaginative assignments, but allow students to reflect their knowledge in their own creative
