Abstract:
Employability skills and Career readiness have become an integral part of education. Employers are looking for people with a combination of skills such as soft skills, customer service skills and life skills. Not having sufficient employability skill sets, is one of the main reason for many students not getting selected in campus drives. Focus is more on technical knowledge than soft skills in their curriculum. During the course of their education , required level of importance is not given to key qualities like effective communication, leadership qualities, time management skills, self motivation, problem solving skills and creative thinking.

The difference between the skills needed on the job and those possessed by applicants, sometimes called the skills-gap, is of real concern to human resource managers and business owners looking to hire competent employees. While employers would prefer to hire people who are trained and ready to go to work, they are usually willing to provide the specialized, job-specific training necessary for those lacking such skills. Most discussions concerning today’s workforce eventually turn to employability skills. Finding workers who have employability or job readiness skills that help them fit into and remain in the work environment is a real problem. Employers need reliable, responsible workers who can solve problems and who have the social skills and attitudes to work together with other workers. Creativity, once a trait avoided by employers who used a cookie cutter system, is now prized among employers who are trying to create the empowered, high performance workforce needed for competitiveness in today’s marketplace. Employees with these skills are in demand and are considered valuable human capital assets to companies. Employability skills are those basic skills necessary for getting, keeping, and doing well on a job. These are the skills, attitudes and actions that enable workers to get along with their fellow workers and supervisors and to make sound, critical decisions. Unlike occupational or technical skills, employability skills are generic in nature rather than job specific and cut across all industry types, business sizes, and job levels from the entry-level worker to the senior-most position. Job readiness skills are clustered into three skill sets: basic academic skills, higher order thinking skills, personal qualities Employability skills are those basic skills necessary for getting, keeping, and doing well on a job. Employability skills are teachable skills.
Have you ever been in a position where you where stuck and couldn’t decide between two careers? Whether it was something that you love to do or something that pays well? The answer may seem easy to you but when you start comparing the facts; that’s when it gets hard to choose. For many of us, graduates and people around the world have a difficult time choosing a career that can be a confusing process. A lot of people tend to settle down on a career quickly. Unfortunately, choosing a rapid occupation often leads to an unsatisfying path in the future, if not sooner. Eventually the individual decides to quit and start all over again. According to choosingacareer.net, “6% of workers over the age 50 are in the process of changing a career, resumes mailed to companies’ staffing departments only accounts for 3% of hires nationwide, and 95% of human resources managers and 95% of job seekers depend on personal contacts and networking to fill and find openings.” (choosingacareer.net) Choosing a career takes time and research, so it’s better to plan your future than rapidly pick one. Although some people claim they are happy with the career they chose of the bat, choosing a career carefully is much more effective because in the long run you will feel content and appreciate more with the choice you made.
As I have noted, I truly believe that the numerous job skills that are needed to be successful include dedication, communication, and adaptation. First of all, you must be devoted to your career if you want exemplary results. Equally important, being able to articulate your ideas, and intellectually communicate said ideas will ensure a successful time at you occupation. Last but not least, in order to be successful in your employment, you must be flexible to the obstacles that are inevitable. I urge you to strive to obtain these essential job skills because they are worthwhile.

Managers should understand an employee’s skills and abilities to make an informed decision on whether or not to hire him. Once hired a manager uses skills and abilities as a deciding factor for an employee’s job placement within the corporation. Secondly, an evaluation of an employee’s personality helps the manager in his leadership approach of that employee. Transferrable skills development is essential in order to increase one’s chance in their career fields. While this is an important aspect of job searching, most students do not spend enough time to enhance these skills. There are various opportunities where a student is able to develop these skills, including post-secondary institutes and work placements. In a school setting, students are able to learn the theoretical aspects while in a placement setting, students receive hands-on experience.
In this report, I will reflect on my professional development throughout this module, from when I started in September, to now. According to Beausaert et al. (2011), ‘the art of self-evaluation is an integral element of reflection and involves critical insight into understanding one 's strengths and limitations’. Therefore, my aim is to identify my learning needs and to recognise my personal skills and capabilities, as well as identifying areas of my skill set that need to be refreshed or extended to stand out in the competitive job market. By doing this, I hope to demonstrate knowledge of the skills that I have gained during this module.

The career services program is as effective as the career professional and support staff design and implement it to be. Despite the challenges that Cynthia Matson faces in her position, she is consistently in the top ten percent of ITT Tech campuses for student job placement and has always made the goal of a minimum 80% job placement rate for new graduates. The key to success in this field is to build a relationship early with students and nurture their goals and desires while working closely with academics to assure students are ready for the workforce.
