Having the feeling that everything at work has been placed on their shoulders is a struggle that most workers in today's American society feel as if that they are at constant battle with their employers. Many workers feel as if they are given several tasks that they feel they are not able to complete in shift. Workers are usually not given fair treatment as they are having to sacrifice a great deal for the company in which they work for. Even though they agreed to the company's policies when they were hired for the job they should still be allowed to be able to work their desired schedule. If they had the option to be able to get out of prior arrangements so they would not make the entire staff suffer. People set their availability for certain reason whether that be because they have other jobs, are going to school, or have children in which they have to pick up and take care of. A company needs an entire team in order to be able to excel and make the best for everyone in the work environment. If for some reason a request is not able to be made, then the employer should talk to their employee so that they could either work something out or they could find a way for them to be able to make their shifts. People usually have set availability for certain reasons or ask for time off as they may have prior arrangements, or other obligations in which they may need to take care of. Talking to their employer in advance can resolve problems that can later come up into question. Scientific evidence provides the information on the negative effects stress in the different levels of our wellbeing. Stress has been identified as a killer, just like the warnings we see in the crazed commercials on cigarette smoking, we cannot ignore the reality of inevitable damage. Those of us that experience an awaking of senses are able to reduce and control stress levels by putting life into prospective. Over the past several years extended work shifts and overtime has increased among nurses in the hospital setting due to the shortage of nurses. Errors significantly increase and patient safety can be compromised when nurses work past a twelve hour shift or more than 40 hours a week. Hazardous conditions are created when the patient acuity is high, combined with nurse shortages, and a rapid rate of admissions and discharges. Many nurses today are not able to take regularly scheduled breaks due to the patient work load. On units where nurses are allowed to self-schedule, sixteen and twenty-four hour shifts are becoming more common, which does not allow for time to recover between shifts. Currently there are no state or federal regulations that restrict nurses from working excessive hours or mandatory overtime to cover vacancies. This practice by nurses is controversial and potentially dangerous to patients (Rogers, Hwang, Scott, Aiken, & Dinges, 2004). Burnout, job dissatisfaction, and stress could be alleviated if the proper staffing levels are in place with regards to patient care. Studies indicate that the higher the nurse-patient ratio, the worse the outcome will be. Nurse Manager’s need to be aware of the adverse reactions that can occur from nurses working overtime and limits should be established (Ford, 2013).

Nurses, physicians, and other helping professionals are in a good position, by virtue of their training, to add to such preventive efforts. Health is defined as a condition of physical, mental, and social well being and the absence of disease or other abnormal condition. It is not a static condition; constant change and adaptation to stress result in homeostasis (Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary, 1994 p. 742). The fact that we can improve our health and extend our lives by changing our behaviors (i.e., eating well, exercising, not smoking, and reducing stress) supports the incorporation of health education, and prevention programs into a broad variety of settings.

It’s just one big cycle. Focusing on all components of good health such as eating a balanced diet for your physical, finding stress relievers for your mental and spending time with friends and family for social, is taking positive preventive measures to stay healthy. It is not only our responsibility, but a community effort to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve and maintain overall good health.
I worked for the drugstore chain Walgreens in the early 2000’s and was involved in a situation where employees were asked to perform work off the clock. The incident occurred when Walgreens was preparing to open a new store in Los Banos, Ca. The company had a tight deadline for getting the store to an operational state, requiring huge tasks in a short amount of time. As the scheduled opening date approached it was clear the store was not on track to be ready for business by the opening date. Management and lower level employees were all feeling the pressure to do work faster and harder in order to catch up.

Unhealthy habits, such as diet or sleep deprivation, interfere with the body’s ability to maintain a sense of well-being which affects stress levels (Bickford 25). This is why adequately sleeping, having a healthy and balanced diet, and exercising regularly can all help reduce a person’s stress.

As mentioned by Michael and Heather (2010), they also can share their matters with their friends and family they trust to talk about what is bothering them and try to make sense of it. Another important way in reducing stress is say no to extra work or responsibilities, therefore, they can taking a long, hot bath with music and candles which can be a good stress reliever. William (2004) recommends that a good nutrient which consist of whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, protein, fish and healthy fats from nuts and seeds can play a critical role in the stress response.
Stress is a major cause of heart disease and my stressors have increased. I know I must do something to offset the effects of it our I will end up like many of my ancestors— dead by the age of 60. Once I incorporate these two changes in my life I expect my stress levels to lower and the effects will be more than simply weight loss and physical condition.
Life is full of troubles, demands, pressures and hassles—these are all factors related to stress. Stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or difficult situations (Merriam-Webster). When you are in potential danger, your body responds with a “fight-or-flight” response to protect you from any harm. Situations like being robbed at gunpoint or studying last minute the night before the test can activate stress in your body. Although situations in life can increase stress, there are plenty of methods to diminish it. Methods like meditating, talking to family/friends, drinking tea, or even taking a quick nap--all of these methods are proven effective (The Franklin Institute). One method that is prominent to many is physical exercise. Exercise is considered to improve physical conditions and strength, but maintains mental fitness in the process. Although many assume that exercising is healthy, some may not be familiar of how it relieves stress in detail. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise, the pros and cons must be considered. Some pros are: managing the levels of stress in your body, boosting your self-esteem, and improving learning and memory. The cons are: being time consuming and tedious, being costly and expensive, and risking injury while exercising. Let’s look at the pros of physical activity.
Knowing how to handle stress by using some strategies like deep breathing, yoga and meditation will help us bring back our mind and body in a state of balance since they are considered as effective techniques for stress management. Also, connecting face-to-face with other people, accepting one’s strengths and weaknesses, seeking help from others and having strong communication with our family and friends are just some ways to have a good emotional health. Furthermore, if you’re having a serious problem regarding your emotional health, you can seek a health professional for help and guidance.
