Senior Project Reflection

During my Senior Project, I managed to have a glimpse of two of the many jobs that can be categorized as Computer Science: Information Technologies (IT) and software developing. For my first week of the project I worked at DotNet Technologies, a small IT company that provides technical help to businesses, helping fix a number of computers. On top of this, I also attended several meetings, both within the company and externally with other local businesses. After my week with DotNet, I worked with the software development team at Findley Davies, a business consulting firm, where I learned how to better code in various languages, such as HTML, Javascript, PHP, and several others, as well as how to work with databases. Nevertheless, I knew that I did not have a choice and that it would likely be good for me to do, so I walked into DotNet anyways. Once in the office, I was greeted by Mr. Stainbrook, given a schedule for what we would be doing over the following week, and asked a number of questions about my interest in computers. Afterwards, he showed me around the office and told me about the company. Eventually, I got to meet the others around the office and grew comfortable rather quickly. For most of the following week I would go to a number of meetings with Mr. Stainbrook, consisting of marketing, networking, and a couple to keep everyone in the business up to date. While I certainly did not expect to go to any meetings while at DotNet, they were one of the highlights of my Senior Project, and I believe they helped me become far less shy as I was meeting dozens of new people every day. During the rest of the week, I would do typical IT work, such as fixing and updating computers, which was surprisingly similar to a lot of the tinkering I do at home. Following my first week, I went to Findley Davies in the tallest building in Northwest Ohio, which was a completely different environment. However, I was not very nervous about meeting my sponsor or any new people anymore, and I was looking forward to the following week. Once I met my …show more content…

Despite the fact that I enjoyed my time on project, the difficulty in finding a sponsor along with the fines was ludicrously stressful. While I understand the necessity for deadlines and a punishment for missing the deadline to teach a lesson, the fines do not seem like the best method of punishment, as they often punish the parents more than the student and add an artificial stress to the beginning of the project that does not need to be there to get students to turn in their paperwork or learn their lesson. Nevertheless, after the stress that came with finding a sponsor, I enjoyed my time on project very much. I believe I have learned a lot, and that it has helped me be open to meeting new people tremendously. Likewise, I would absolutely recommend Mr. Stainbrook as a community sponsor, as it was very obvious that he put a lot of time and effort into creating the best possible experience for me, with great effect. The project has also managed to make me numerous connections, both professional and casual, that I hope to maintain. My experiences while on project have solidified my decision to go into the Computer Science field, and taught me about the typical environments in the two primary Computer Science careers. For these reasons, I likely would recommend future seniors to do Senior Project, as I found the experience to be beneficial, even though it unquestionably began by being very
