Senior Project Rough Draft There is a newly wedded couple who has decided it is time for them to move out their small apartment and buy their own home. They go house hunting, and after seeing two homes they find this house that they feel is the home of their dreams yet it lacks some of the extra luxury things they feel is needed. They decide to purchase the house. They move in two months later and go straight to work. They knock out walls, change the flooring, add a pool, new appliances, remodel the bathroom, new central air and heat system, everything to fit their desired needs. After months of renovation the house is finally complete. They throw a house warming party to celebrate. Life is great for the couple. As the years go by they feel it is time they have a baby, but not just any kind of baby. They go to a reproduction clinic and talk to the doctor. The doctor lets them know all the options they are able to choose from. Just like they made the many changes to their home this is what genetically modifying consist of. The doctor then asks what do they want their baby to consist of as far as its looks and characteristics. With excitement they begin to explain Father: Boy, tall, smart, athletic, healthy. Mother: Boy, attractive, blue eyes, blonde hair, massive IQ. The doctor jots down all of the information and then they move into the next process. The mother’s egg and father’s sperm is then collected. They are presented with a stack of papers so that the doctors have their consent. Imagine a parent walking into what looks like a conference room. A sheet of paper waits on a table with numerous questions many people wish they had control over. Options such as hair color, skin color, personality traits and other physical appearances are mapped out across the page. When the questions are filled out, a baby appears as he or she was described moments before. The baby is the picture of health, and looks perfect in every way. This scenario seems only to exist in a dream, however, the option to design a child has already become a reality in the near future. Parents may approach a similar scenario every day in the future as if choosing a child’s characteristics were a normal way of life. These enhancements are used to modify human embryos and during gene therapy. There are currently two different approaches to gene manipulation, embryo elimination or genetic alteration. The point being, there is a choice of either disposing of an embryo because it has a genetic defect or genetic alteration of a gene which results in removing traits or enhancing them. There are birth defects and fatal incurable diseases that need to be eliminated. Genetic engineering could pave the way to discover ways to eliminate or at least reduce them. This could cause ethical concerns but social concerns as well. If this was allowed to occur, it would also give the rich even more advantages than they already have to begin with and drive the social classes even farther apart. Germline engineering would change genes in eggs, sperm, or very early embryos. This type of engineering is inheritable, meaning that the modified genes would appear not only in any children that resulted from the procedure, but in all succeeding generations.
