Delaying the start time of school for 10th-grade students, while often proposed to improve their health and academic performance, presents several significant disadvantages that warrant consideration. One primary concern is the potential disruption to students' daily routines and schedules. Many families have established routines based on current school start times, which include coordinating transportation, extracurricular activities, and parental work schedules. A later start time could complicate these arrangements, potentially causing stress and logistical challenges for both students and their families. Moreover, students might find it difficult to adjust to a shifted schedule, impacting their ability to concentrate and engage effectively …show more content…
High school students are often involved in various extracurricular pursuits such as sports, clubs, or community service, which typically occur after school. A delayed start could compress this crucial time window, forcing students to choose between academic obligations and their interests or responsibilities outside of school. Additionally, many students work part-time jobs to gain experience, support their families, or save for college. A later start time might limit their availability for work, potentially affecting their financial situation and overall well-being. Furthermore, there are concerns about the impact of a delayed start time on educational outcomes. Some argue that reducing the amount of instructional time available could negatively affect students' academic performance, particularly in subjects that require sustained concentration and practice. Moreover, teachers may face challenges in coordinating schedules with students and maintaining consistency in lesson plans and assessments. This logistical complexity could potentially disrupt the learning environment and undermine efforts to ensure comprehensive educational experiences for all
An advantage to starting school later would be that students would be less drowsy at school; thus, being forced to pay attention and -- in the long run -- improve grades. According to a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, “28 percent of students [fall] asleep” during f...

School Should Begin Later in the Day Many teenage high school students are tired during the school day. distracting them from their studies. That is just one of the many good reasons. that the start time of school should be later in the day. Some people may say that the brain is not fully functional until 9:30 is just a matter of opinion.
Imagine a day where you are taking notes for a test, and then you fall asleep in the middle of your teacher’s lecture on prepositional phrases. For many students, this is a common occurrence. All across the country, teens are not getting enough sleep. Time pressures related to homework, sports, family time, and other after school activities steal precious sleep from teens. Teens need at least eight hours of sleep a night; however, many teens never reach that amount.
Kyla Wahlstrom’s article “Why teen brains need a later school start time” she discusses the benefits of starting school after eight-o-clock. There are benefits such as preventing teen car crashes, happiness and hopefulness, and alcohol/drug/cigarette decline. With these benefits, teens are more likely to succeed in the long run as their academic performance improves significantly with later start time. Schools should push back the school start time for teens as it enhances the overall performance.
Kaylee Davis Lori Hall Pre-AP English 1 Argumentative Speech March 5, 2024 Why Schools Should Start Later School starting too early is impacting students negatively. Hopkins County Schools should change the school day to start later. This would have health benefits for students, student’s grades would improve, and there would be safer roads in the mornings for kids. My first point is that, with the 1st period starting at 8:00 a.m., kids are just too tired.
School days starting later would help improve student attendance by a lot! For example, a copious amount of students oversleep which results in lateness to school. However, if school started at least one to two hours later, then the students perhaps will not be late, and as a result, they can...
Schools are considering pushing their start times so that they start later. This may seem like a good idea at first but there are actually several laws in this idea. Some of the flaws include transportation issues, health issues and interfering with extracurricular activities. At first it seemed like a good idea but after further review, schools should not start at a later time because it causes problems with transportation, extracurriculars and early rising is beneficial to the human body.
Parents’ work schedules could clash with the high school’s new start time. Later start times could also conflict with a student’s younger sibling’s schedule. The later start time will take away students’ and teachers’ time. Many student’s sleep schedules would be altered or off-set. A later start time will make kids think they can stay up later so they wouldn’t get more sleep.
Education is one of the most important components of our world. Education is essential in finding a career in the future, as well as having common knowledge. School has always started in the morning and ended in the late afternoon. Lately, many students want the time in which school begins to move to a later time. Very intelligent people run the educational system, and if there were an easy fix to this problem, they would have figured out a solution by now.
Start time School is one of the hardest things for kids. If you really want to know just ask them. They will tell you that the worst part is that they have to wake up early just to get to school on time. If you don't get up and get to school on time then you will get in trouble and have to stay for detention. Most kids just want to have fun and play school pretty much takes that away from us kids.
School start times need to be pushed back because of student’s physiological need for sleep. Most student, teachers, and parents are aware of how most adolescents are in the morning: slow, groggy, and unresponsive. It always seems as though first hour class periods drag on the longest and it where student’s can be found with the largest eye bags, darkest under circles, and heaviest eyelids. Not only do they look tired, but they feel tired inside and this inward lull affects their outward appearance and interaction with fellow classmates. In an article written for The Journal of School Health, coauthors Noland, Price, Dake, Telljohann analyses journals that were kept by student’s as well as interviews they personally conducting on those students
At Clinton High School, school starts every day at 8:30 A.M. Although many complain that this is too early, there are many advantages to having an early start time. Starting school earlier in the day has many great academic benefits. According to the Buffer Social blog, the best time to write and get ideas is early in the morning because the brain is more active.
Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents’ work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since parents will not be able to take their kids to school which might cause traffic and more costs since bus schedules would change too. According to the Sleep Foundation, "If elementary students have the earliest start times, they may be waiting for the bus in the dark early mornings, or waiting at home alone after school." Later start times are thought to solve tardies and absences, but if students cannot get to school, it does not solve anything. A change in the school schedule will result in disorder in many people’s daily routines perhaps having to discard certain activities to fully adjust to the new schedule. The changes caused by a new schedule affects students
As a sophomore student at Kimberly High School, I would like to take some time to talk about delaying the school start time. Having a later school start time would benefit the students at Kimberly High School because it allows time to eat a healthy breakfast, it will not interrupt teens sleep cycle, which will help improve academic performance.
