Kaylee Davis Lori Hall Pre-AP English 1 Argumentative Speech March 5, 2024 Why Schools Should Start Later School starting too early is impacting students negatively. Hopkins County Schools should change the school day to start later. This would have health benefits for students, student’s grades would improve, and there would be safer roads in the mornings for kids. My first point is that, with the 1st period starting at 8:00 a.m., kids are just too tired. You can tell that they don’t give their best effort like they might with later classes. This makes it harder for teachers to help them actually learn. Many kids stay up late by choice, however, many teens don't have a choice. For kids who participate in sports, it can be challenging to balance everything. You typically have so much to do and you are barely home. And when you are home, you have to do homework, eat dinner, and take a shower. Due to having too many things to do, teens’ sleep often suffers. 16-19 year olds are the most likely to get in a car crash, in the mornings, as stated by safeteendriving.org. Students can still be tired from having to wake up so early to get ready for school. They also can’t focus on driving as well if they are trying to focus on staying awake. Why would anyone want their kids driving to school at this hour when studies show the decrease in crashes just by changing the start time of school? Changing the start time of school would improve student attendance. According to the Scholarly Community Encyclopedia, a test in 2014 showed that attendance was greatly improved when school was changed to start at 8:30 or later. This would give kids more time to fully wake up and get ready. It would also help with tardies in the mornings. This would benefit both students and the overall school
