“Research has shown over and over again that teenagers do better and feel better in schools that start later” (Omarsson). Starting school at around 7 or 6 is too early and causing kids to go downhill, it has been for a long while. Starting school later could possibly make school a lot better and even help graduation rates.
Sleep is a definite must! Each day kids are constantly losing more and more sleep. As Elizabeth Malatesta states, “The adolescent body doesn’t begin to produce melatonin, a hormone linked to sleep cycles, until around 11pm, leaving adolescents with a limited window in which to obtain sufficient sleep”, this shows that teens aren’t getting enough sleep because school starts at a time in which doesn’t allow them to get the amount of …show more content…

As argued by Corrine Lederhouse, “Opponents argue that changing school start times would be expensive for parents and school districts. However, a recent study from RAND Europe shows that delaying school start times is cost-effective. Results suggest that starting school later could have a positive impact on the U.S economy”, the facts are there, starting school later would be for the best. But school boards keep saying that it will cost too much and drain their money. But it could, in fact, save money. “Study results suggest that the benefits of later start times outweigh the immediate costs. After only two years, the study projects an economic gain of $8.6 billion to the U.S economy. After 10 years the study shows that delaying school would contribute $83 billion to the U.S economy. The 20-year projection shows an average annual gain of about $9.3 billion each year to the U.S economy”, Explains Corrine Lederhouse. Not only would starting school later not be expensive, it would also save money! Kids would be so much better mentally and it would save money.
