Abbey Lewis Mrs. Zimmerman English 10 04 March 2024 It’s Too Early It’s not fun getting up early is it? Teenagers don't get nearly enough sleep because of how early they have to get up for school, getting up at 6am so they can get ready on time to drowsily drive to school (which most of the time kids just skip the first few periods to get an extra hour of sleep). Making attendance and grades worse, an easy way to fix these issues is schools making the start time later. Teenagers only get about six hours of sleep each school night. This is not even close to the recommended eight to nine they are supposed to get. According to Tim Walker's article about why school times should be later, he says, “Students without enough sleep are more likely to …show more content…
This proves that teenagers need later starting times because the amount of sleep they're getting now is not enough for everything the schools expect them to do during the school day. If schools pushed back the start time to even 30 minutes, that could immensely help teens get more sleep and even get them to be more happy throughout the day. Attendance and grades are proven to be worse because of early start times. Getting up usually isn't easy for anyone, especially kids who just want to stay in bed all day. If high schoolers who can drive don't want to go to school, they won't. Example: me today. It’s bad I know, but sometimes you just need those extra thirty minutes. The American Psychological Association says “Increased attendance rates, Decrease in disciplinary action, Decrease in student-involved car accidents, Increase in student GPA, Increase in state assessment scores, Increase in college admissions test scores, Increase in student attention, Decrease in student sleeping during instruction, and Increase in quality of student-family interaction.” These are possible outcomes if schools start just thirty minutes
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Kids and teen everywhere are rushed, stressed, and not doing as well in school because they aren't getting the right amount of sleep. About 40% of american high schools start classes before 8:00 am and more than 20% of middle schools start at 7:45 am or earlier. School start times should be later because teens need sleep and it improves their overall academic grades.
When you were 14-16 were you tired or sleeping in class? Odds are you were, because 60% of 14-16 year olds get less than 7 hours of sleep each night. Schools should start later than when it is now because of these 3 reasons. The 1st reason is that kids wouldn’t be so tired in their morning classes. They wouldn’t fall asleep in their morning classes. Kids would get enough sleep where they won't be so late to class. The last reason is that kids would feel better because they will get more hours of sleep than normal.
Schools should not start later because that would cause a lot of problems. Schools should stay how they are because it will make kids stop being on there phones at night so much, it won’t make school end later (and make kids walk home in the dark), and it interfere with sports or jobs.
Have you ever woken up and still felt unbelievably tired? Ever needed an extra hour or two of sleep? Scientists have proven that kids who sleep more can retain more information. More sleep could easily be achieved if we would delay school start times. Schools that have done this have shown higher test grades. Schools should have later start times because parents have trouble getting their children up, kids need a lot more sleep than they are getting, and there would be a lowered risk of illnesses.
I strongly believe kids should start school later than 8:00 so that they can get better grades and have more focus. If kids start school early their grades can go down and they can lose focus. Sometimes I get to school and I am tired. My school starts at 8:30 so it starts later than usual schools though, so that means schools should definitely start after 8:00. Schools that start early should definitely think about a later start time.
Matthew Santimore Goldstein pd 5 ELA March, 2018 Persuasive Are you ever so drowsy at school that you can't even focus on your assignments during school. I am. There is an issue going on about sleep. This issue being that only 15% of teens get the recommended amount of sleep.
Schools should start later because it’ll lead to better grades and better attitudes. When teens don’t have enough sleep some teens might start to do drugs and alcohol. Sleep is very important to all ages. Some teens have uneven sleep orders, because some may stay up late and get up late on the weekends and that may cause them to be off schedule during the week(Lewis). Even though later start time would lead kids missing end of the day classes to attend sporting events, school should start later because kids need more sleep and reduces car crashes and uses in alcohol and drugs.
I believe that school should have a later start because it improves the way students and the school environment in many ways. School usually starts at eight a.m. and I believe it should start around nine a.m. This gives students an extra hour of sleep or more time in the morning to get ready or eat a bigger meal. One of the reasons I believe school should start later is because students will gain more sleep. More sleep will improve grades because sleep refreshes your mind and lets your brain rest for a long school day. I understand that kids might stay up later, but if school started later this will give them the chance to catch up on loss sleep from the weeknds. More sleep will improve
An average student needs 8 ½ to 10 hours of sleep a night. If they have to get up for school at 6 they should be in bed by at least 9:30. A lot of parents think that starting school later is a great idea but there are many downfalls with starting later. Although getting up early can affect a teens natural sleep pattern, schools shouldn't start later in the school day. The amount of sleep they get, the activities or sports kids go after school, if they babysit their younger siblings after school, all this is affected by starting school later.
We are all used to the argument that people make that school should start at a later hour. Of course a lot of people want to sleep in, catch a few more Z’s. It sounds tempting. However, in the end pushing school to a later start time would cause more harm than good. I know all about the so called perfect all american family. Mom gets up early and makes breakfast for kids. She sends them off to school with a smile making sure they don’t forget their homework. Well let’s just say that not all of us live the all american dream. My mom has to be to work by 5 am. That means I am left to get my little sister ready to school, try and make breakfast, make sure the doors are all locked and somehow get to school on time. This doesn’t always work. Yesterday was my 5th tardy of the year. Starting school even a half hour later could make life a lot easier for some of us who are really trying.
For the past three or so years now, there have been many controversies on whether schools should start at a later time. There are definitely many pros and cons if school were to start at a later time, but many teenagers would greatly appreciate it. Nowadays lately, especially in our generation that is full of technology and socializing, students tend to stay up much later than they should be. This not only causes many problems for a student’s health itself, but also pushes many problems into a teacher’s hand. This leads to the conclusion that schools should start a much later time.
Have you ever felt burned or drained while in class? Many students have said that they feel physically or mentally drained out from having to wake up so early for school and sit in a classroom for long periods of time. Others have stated that they enjoy the schedule and don’t believe that there should be any changes. Here are some reasons why schools shouldn't start later and what time they should actually start.
I feel that the school start the school day later so that kids can get a couple extra hours of sleep before going to learn.
Have you ever felt like if you just had one extra hour of sleep you would be able to function better in school? Lack of sleep to our teenage brain is a big deal; less sleep can limit our brain development. Our bodies naturally wake up later, we are more alert then. We should delay our first hour to get that extra hour of sleep. The government is starting to notice that teens need more sleep to concentrate in school, so they are working on making laws and bills to get us that extra hour of needed sleep. We teenagers should be allowed an extra hour of sleep. Research has shown that even with an extra hour of sleep our performance is better throughout the school day!
