I feel that the school start the school day later so that kids can get a couple extra hours of sleep before going to learn.
Kids need to get more sleep because it affects their health “Both the CDC and the pediatricians’ group cited significant risks that come with lack of sleep, including higher rates of obesity and depression and motor-vehicle accidents among teens as well as an overall lower quality of life.” (Emily Richmond).
In more than 40 states schools start before 8:30, so if a student does not go to bed very early they will very tired and have a hard time getting to school, kids need at least 8 and a half to 9 and half hours of sleep a night. Most kids have to get up at 5 or 6 just to catch the bus, most buses come at 5:30 to 6, at those times it is dark outside and a child is forced to stand in the dark and wait for their bus, this can be dangerous and scary for the child someone could kidnap them. Students being released in the afternoon also is a safety hazard, in the afternoon with not very much sleep teenagers are tired and that makes it harder to drive home, sleep deprivation also increases substance abuse and risk taking. “ Medical professionals, middle and high school teachers, and other student advocates have long argued that school start times are simply too early. Around 80% of schools start before 8am., which means many students windup sleep-deprived.”
This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their school starts later. Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before.

School start times should be later because teens need sleep and it improves their overall academic grades.

When it comes to middle and high schools, they tend to start early, not generally knowing why the kids are tired. Early school start times plague the students with low grades, sleep deprivation, and lower social skills. A solution to all of those factors would be to make the school start time later than 8:00. Middle school start times should be later because grades will be better, more time to wake up, and better social skills.
Boergers, who is also co-director of the Pediatric Sleep Disorders Clinic at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, said these finding have important implications for public policy. “The result of the study add to a growing body of research demonstrating important health benefits of later school start times for adolescents,” she said. “If we more closely align school schedules with adolescents circadian rhythms and sleep needs, we will have students who are more happier, alert, and better prepared to learn.”

That means he only gets about 6 hours of sleep because he has to wake up at 5:30. After basketball he's tired, then he has to go to school and most likely falls asleep in school because he's so weary from such a busy, miniscule morning. Schools should start later in the morning because it gives the child more sleep so they won't be tired, gives them a more productive morning and benefits their education.

Students should be able to start school at 9:00 a.m. Students should start later because kids will have a better attendance and less tardies. The more sleep students get the more energized they are, as well as having a better mood throughout the day. The majority of the students drive, so the more sleep they have helps decrease the rate of car accidents. Students are late, absent, cranky, and careless this is why school should start later.
We’ve all woken up tired not wanting to go to school, because we didn’t get enough sleep. Students feel sleepy almost everyday waking up around six in the morning just to be put behind a desk for hours. In addition to this, brings along students being tired which makes sense because a third of students admit to falling asleep on any school day. So why don't we start later? With the extra hour, attendance rates would go up along with the health of the students, as well as their grades and attitudes, and it would be just as good for teens as for the staff of the schools. Students and teacher both wish that school would start later. Most teenagers are grumpy and unpleasant in the morning which nobody enjoys. It is actually unhealthy for teens to be at school before nine o’clock. The only issue with school starting later is that some students may not have rides due to parents working and not being able to take them.
