I am sure most of the students do not like to get up early in the morning to go to school.
The alarm goes off and many tired students still hit the snooze button. Making school start later will allow students to get more sleep. This is also good for the health, the safety and the concentration of the teen.
Health is very important, in this period of time, the body of the teen is in the process of growing, and in order to happen, students need to sleep at least 8 hours of sleep. Teens are not experienced drivers and if they do not sleep well, problems on the road will increase. “Sleep related crashes are most common in young people,” ”Sleep deprivation increases the risk of a sleep-related crash; the less people sleep, the greater the risk“ (National sleep foundation). This quote show us that teen are more vulnerable when it come to accident in the road, and the lack of sleep can increase the difficulty of driving. And if the school hours change, the rate of the crashes in the morning will lower and the safety in the country will increase. A study published in 2011 found increased automobile crash rates among teen drivers who start school earlier in the morning. Another study published in 2008 found that the average crash rates for teen drivers dropped by 16.5 percent in a county that moved the high school start time one hour later. Sleep! That wonderful, blissful void between last night and this morning. Sleep is one of the most basic functions of life. Nearly all creatures must sleep in order to properly carry out tasks; teenagers are no exception. The typical teenager needs an average of nine to ten hours of sleep a night in order for their brains to be capable of working at full capacity. School starts so early that they infringe upon that basic necessity. In order for teens to receive an adequate amount of sleep, it is mandatory to enact later start times for high schools across the country.
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Some people may believe that starting school later wouldn't help kids and would waste money, by really they are wrong because it can give students much needed sleep. When the pros and cons are weighed, It's obvious that schools start time should be later because teens need sleep and it improves grades and test scores. So get out there and let kids sleep

In a recent study done by Yucaipa high school, 97% of students believe school should start later. Students should be able to start school at 9:00 a.m. Students should start later because kids will have a better attendance and less tardies. The more sleep students get the more energized they are, as well as having a better mood throughout the day. The majority of the students drive, so the more sleep they have helps decrease the rate of car accidents. Students are late, absent, cranky, and careless this is why school should start later.
Some people may say starting later could still cause crashes to occur. Well if school was later to where it is light outside this would not be as big of a problem. There is a lot more things such as animals that people can not see when it is dark as fast as when it is light out. Messing with these sleep cycles in the long run and lead to sleep disorders. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests teenagers 13-18 years old should regularly sleep 8-10 hours each night for a healthy sleep. The teens who do not get a good amount of sleep are more likely to suffer from mental conditions, smoking, illicit drugs, and alcohol use. ¨Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance.¨ (¨Schools Start Too Early¨). On an NBC news story, Hilton Head Island High School moved its start time and benefits were noticeable. Students had higher test score averages and grades improved throughout the school.A study done in 2008 published in the journal of clinical sleep, found car accident rates fell by 16.5% when students were more aware on the road, not having to wake up before 7 am.
We’ve all woken up tired not wanting to go to school, because we didn’t get enough sleep. Of course when I say we, I mean as in teens who go to school, and possibly yourself when at the time in your life. The schedule for school doesn’t fit in very well with our sleep patterns. Sleep experts from the University of Minnesota, have found that later start times made students have a better health measure and over perform better in school (Hoofman 2). Research being done on this topic mostly specifies that bodies don’t agree with the start time, for various reasons. School start times should be pushed back an hour to benefit teens health, and school performance.
If school started later, it would increase grades. For example, a high school that tried a later start time noticed big changes in their grades. The average SAT score for one class rose from 1288 to 1500 after the students got to sleep in longer (Popova, Maria).This shows that their grades grew 14% by just sleeping in longer. It also accentuates the long term effects of sleeping in more. In fact, the college board saw the new results and said it was “truly flabbergasting” (Popova, Maria). If even the college board agrees that starting school later could be beneficial, than why haven’t more schools taken action? Not only does later start times improve grades, it also keeps student safer.
A normal school day begins between 7:00 and 8:00 (Canapari). A typical wake time for students is 6 A.M. (Canapari). An average teen goes to bed between 10 and 11 (Canapari). This means that an average teen gets on average seven to eight hours of sleep when they need on average 9 ¼ hours of sleep as stated in the above paragraph. One man, Matt Gaetz stated, “The evidence is pretty one sided that high school students don’t have the same cognitive function that they have at eight or nine in the morning.” (Beaton). We are all used to the argument that people make that school should start at a later hour. Of course a lot of people want to sleep in, catch a few more Z’s. It sounds tempting. However, in the end pushing school to a later start time would cause more harm than good. I know all about the so called perfect all american family. Mom gets up early and makes breakfast for kids. She sends them off to school with a smile making sure they don’t forget their homework. Well let’s just say that not all of us live the all american dream. My mom has to be to work by 5 am. That means I am left to get my little sister ready to school, try and make breakfast, make sure the doors are all locked and somehow get to school on time. This doesn’t always work. Yesterday was my 5th tardy of the year. Starting school even a half hour later could make life a lot easier for some of us who are really trying.

Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
