Writing 39B gave me an impressive impression when I got in the first class because my previous writing and academic English classes were full of Chinese but now there are few Chinese student so I felt pretty anxious because of the higher competitive. That really challenged me a lot, I had to focus on it to keep the step of the class. Rhetorical analysis is a thesis of this class and we had done many exercises for it. What impressed me was the critical reading of the story “Bloodchild”, a sci-fi story which had pretty different genre from the previous reading material in writing 39A. Bloodchild was a very interesting story but a little hard to understand for me, so I printed it out and read it thoughtfully when I had any free time. I searched on the internet and read the background of the story and began to understand the plots. To understand the story I wrote many analyzations when I read the story and participated the group work in the class. There were also many homework help me to make critical reading of the story. One of the most helpful assignments is RIP1, create my own creature, this assignment not only help me understand Bloodchild but also help me develop my RIP. At first, I did not know how to create a monster because I never done this before, but when I started
I never made presentation in front of “foreigners” in English before, so I was very nervous, however, the feedbacks from professor and other student were very important. I used the form, short story, but after the presentation, professor told me that I cannot use short story as form and some students suggested me to use an advertisement to convey my message. My project’s target was also kind of ambiguous. I did not specify the audience, actually I did not come up the audience of my project, but when I finished the presentation I realize who my audience is. In the end I used news report as my form and made university students as my
Truman Capote showcases his very distinct style of writing in his true crime novel, In Cold Blood. Capote intentionally frames ruthless murderer Perry Smith as a relatable, well-intentioned human throughout the whole novel, and employs various rhetorical devices to show us that Perry is not just a stone cold killer. Specifically, Capote uses diction comprised of complex words, interviews conducted by Capote personally in which he interacted with the suspects and their loved ones, and sentence structure that came off as very to the point, in order to illustrate Perry’s dynamic and unique personality, opposed to the one dimensional heartless murderer many made him out to be.
7. In the opening passage, Capote describes the town of Holcomb where four murders take place. In at least two paragraphs, analyze how Capote uses at least two rhetorical strategies to convey the tone of the novel and its setting.
The Death of the Birthmark-A Quest for Perfection In the short story, “The Birthmark” Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the characters, foreshadowing, symbolism, and other rhetorical devices to alert people of the consequences of man having the power to control and alter nature. Additionally, through his skillful usage of diction, Hawthorne warns of the effects of seeking perfection through science. In “The Birthmark”, Aylmer, a man devoted entirely to science, marries Georgiana, a beautiful young woman with a single imperfection. Georgiana’s imperfection bears the resemblance of a tiny crimson hand and is visible on her left cheek. The birthmark becomes the object of Aylmer’s obsession and he resolves to use his scientific prowess to correct “what Nature left imperfect in her fairest work.”
“She wakes to the sound of breathing. The smaller children lie tangled beside her, their chests rising and falling under winter coats and wool blankets. A few feet away, their mother and father sleep near the mop bucket they use as a toilet. Two other children share a mattress by the rotting wall where the mice live, opposite the baby, whose crib is warmed by a hair dryer perched on a milk crate.” (Elliot, pg.1) Dasini, an 11 year old child, lives a arduous life with her family in the projects outside New York City. The article, Invisible Child, written by Andrea Elliott, successfully portrays the difficulties Dasini and her family endure on a daily basis.
“This Course prepares students for reading, research, and writing in college classes by teaching students to consider the rhetorical situation of any piece of writing while integrating reading, research, and writing in the academic genres of analysis and argument. This course is said to teach students to develop analyses and arguments using research-based content with effective organization, and appropriate expression and mechanics”. (1)
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Furthermore, the killers dynamically different personalities and morals caused cynicism between Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, yet the pairing surprisingly does not separate nor kill each other during their escape from the police. Also, Perry admits that he believed that Dick was a revolting human being and honestly was not fond of Dick due to his pedophilic tendencies and his cowardly actions. On the other hand, Dick was not planning on keeping Perry around, however, Perry’s bravery kept the pair going since Dick was much less bold, thus he knew without Perry, he would not had been able to escape the police for as long as they did. Therefore, while unfolding the mystery thought out the book, Capote tended to use rhetorical questions that not
Although Capote illustrates the horror of the murders, he must first show how it was a dinky, dull, and unextraordinary farm town; therefore, he masterfully paints it to be a rural town of no particular qualities of individuality, besides its monotony and state of disrepair. His views of the town as derelict and a place of tedium can be quite obvious when one examines his diction. Capote describes the streets of Holcomb as “unnamed, unshaded, unpaved, turn from the thickest dust into the direst mud”. The specific diction or unnamed, unshaded, and unpaved are those that bring about connotations of a bumpy dirt road that one would find in the middle of nowhere. Capote intentionally used that to add the feel of the run-down state of the town
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Blooms’ Taxonomy is a hierarchical classification system developed by Dr. Benjamin Bloom in the 1950s with the goal of promoting higher levels of learning by encouraging individuals to go beyond the knowledge level of learning and advance to comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation; Bloom’s Taxonomy values critical thinking and analysis of knowledge over pure factual knowledge. Reflecting upon my experience writing the rhetorical analysis essay I can see several ways in which I employed this system and in doing so developed critical thinking skills. The base of this hierarchy is knowledge because without knowledge of the story that I selected to analyze would be futile. I also needed to have knowledge of the rhetorical techniques that we discussed in class so that I would be able to look at the story through that lens and go from having knowledge
To sum up, the most useful success I made is writing a good quotation. The last but not least, I never hesitate to talk with instructor and being active about my study. Theses not only writing skills, but also are correct attitude of study. I believe I can do even much better in the following four years' stud
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
Furthermore, I feel that doing this paper and presentation will give my classmates what they need to communicate properly in their future jobs. It is very important because without it we would be lost.
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
