Blooms’ Taxonomy is a hierarchical classification system developed by Dr. Benjamin Bloom in the 1950s with the goal of promoting higher levels of learning by encouraging individuals to go beyond the knowledge level of learning and advance to comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation; Bloom’s Taxonomy values critical thinking and analysis of knowledge over pure factual knowledge. Reflecting upon my experience writing the rhetorical analysis essay I can see several ways in which I employed this system and in doing so developed critical thinking skills. The base of this hierarchy is knowledge because without knowledge of the story that I selected to analyze would be futile. The upper three levels of Blooms’ Taxonomy – analysis, synthesis, and evaluation – were all closely related for me and were all aspects that I found to be challenging to do in my essay. As we all picked different essays and did not go over them at all in class, understanding the work was crucial to having through and accurate analysis. I found it challenging to immediately identify what Carr’s argument and purpose was in the essay; I noticed that over the course of the writing process, what I thought each was gradually evolved as I continued to read over and think critically about Carr’s work. Having a more complete understanding of the essay also helped me to be more precise and less wordy because I knew what I wanted to express and did not need to use as much “fluff” to compensate for not having a clear understanding of something. Because of the relatively low word count, synthesis was crucial; after identifying what I wanted aspects of the essay I wanted to focus on I had to precisely bring together the necessary background knowledge with through analysis without being to general
Appealing to his audience, Herbert Lock (known as Herblock) visually creates “Transported”; a political cartoon including a man sitting on the moon, eyes towards a television. Across the moon the earth is surrounded by dark clouds of smoke and negative words. “Instead of working past problems at home, the world has its eyes set towards the stars, watching the moon...” (maddyaplangcomp.weebly.com) He is asserting his point of view of criticizing people for being very much oblivious to the unsolved major conflicts evolving around them.
In life, actions and events that occur can sometimes have a greater meaning than originally thought. This is especially apparent in The Secret Life Of Bees, as Sue Monk Kidd symbolically uses objects like bees, hives, honey, and other beekeeping means to present new ideas about gender roles and social/community structures. This is done in Lily’s training to become a beekeeper, through August explaining how the hive operates with a queen, and through the experience Lily endures when the bees congregate around her.

It is obvious that literacy contributes to success (logos), that the more fortunate should help people in necessity because it’s the right thing to do (ethos), and that emotion needs to be brought before the eyes in some occasions (pathos) so the audience can be persuaded. Furthermore, the reviewers needed to identify with the writers and everyone else that was a member of the rhetorical ecology. The author wrote this to help readers and writers understand some basic rhetorical principles as they continue to study rhetoric. This argument matters because most people tend to be confused on what rhetoric is and how it should be applied to writing. The author seems to agree with readers and writers on rhetoric being considered confusing but also disagrees with them by stating that rhetoric can be quite simple if elements are used appropriately. Rhetorical Analysis Writers always write in different styles in order to attract readers. Every piece of writing has different types of rhetorical methods. For example, “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” there are different types of techniques used to appeal to writers. In parts of the essay it has logic which is known for using logos. The writer uses very strong emotions which is known as pathos.
Haas and Flower created an interesting point when I read “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning “. In the reading, Haas and Flower, provided multiple propositions to apply, however a key one certainly caught my eye. Haas and Flower proposed various arguments, yet their main idea implied that there needs to be an increase in rhetorical reading. I came to the conclusion that increasing rhetorical reading was their main point due to a statement in the text. “We would like to help extend this constructive, rhetorical view of reading, which we share with others in the field…” [Haas and Flower, 167] the following statement blandly states their intention to spread an important strategy, reading rhetorically, among community.
The author begins his argument by retelling the story of his youth to build his ethos but the results are poor as it presents more questions on how he is a credible source on this argument as his only evidence is his own story. However, through the same means his pathos is built as his anecdote conveys feelings in the audience, making them more willing to listen. Graff finally, gives a call to action to schools to use students’ interests to develop their skills in rhetoric and analysis, which reveals the logic behind his argument. The subject of death is one that many have trouble talking about, but Virginia Woolf provides her ideas in her narration The Death of the Moth. The moth is used as a metaphor to depict the constant battle between life and death, as well as Woolf’s struggle with chronic depression. Her use of pathos and personification of the moth helps readers develop an emotional connection and twists them to feel a certain way. Her intentional use of often awkward punctuation forces readers to take a step back and think about what they just read. Overall, Woolf uses these techniques to give her opinion on existence in general, and reminds readers that death is a part of life.
The rhetorical analysis played a role in this, because I was required to use the various rhetorical appeals to compose a strong argument. Using the appeals definitely helped in trying to persuade the reader to acknowledge the opposing view.
The critical thinking component is not to be overlooked in the classroom, and this is where both Bloom’s Taxonomy and the DOK can be useful tools for preparing the lesson and assessing student milestones. Bloom’s Taxonomy is, undoubtedly, the most widely used of the two, but it does leave something to be desired relative to attaining the goal of completion to mastery.
