English 1020 is the second English course I have taken in my second term at Wayne State University. According to English 1020 syllabus “This Course prepares students for reading, research, and writing in college classes by teaching students to consider the rhetorical situation of any piece of writing while integrating reading, research, and writing in the academic genres of analysis and argument. This course is said to teach students to develop analyses and arguments using research-based content with effective organization, and appropriate expression and mechanics”. (1) English 1020 has enhanced my reading, writing, researching and reflecting skills by giving me the opportunity to practice writing, reading, and reflect on diverse topics. My perception of writing was also positively impacted by taking this course. I now view myself as skillful writer rather than just a college student taking writing courses to pursue my degree. I have become a skillful writer because I now take in consideration prior knowledge and new information I have gained from English 1020. I put into practice these skills whenever I write content relating to the four learning outcomes. Assignment 3A reflective letter allowed me to express how the process went when writing my research paper. Writing this letter also allowed me to know what could have been done differently when writing the research essay and future assignments. Another assignment that allowed me to reflect on my writing process over time was the Literary Narrative. For this assignment I created a poem about my reading and writing process from the age three years old until now. I enjoyed this assignment and was able to share my creative writing style while expressing how much I value reading and writing

The author begins his argument by retelling the story of his youth to build his ethos but the results are poor as it presents more questions on how he is a credible source on this argument as his only evidence is his own story. However, through the same means his pathos is built as his anecdote conveys feelings in the audience, making them more willing to listen. I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
English is vast you can create your own answers, which irritates my science and math like mind set, I want all the answers, I want a set way of doing stuff a step by step guide of getting to one correct answer. However, this course might be able to loosen my mind and notice that in English there can be more than one correct answer. I surely do believe that I can excel in Professor’s Grahams’ English 1101, but only if I work for it and earn an A. According to Dr. Bean’s class syllabus, the primary goal for this course is to, “help you develop the literacy skills you’ll need during your academic career”. In other words, this class was designed to teach students to write like professionals in an academic discourse community. Through several writing and research assignments, we acted as researchers on a quest to examine “how discourse—written, spoken, and digital—is shaped by social practice”. Although I felt I was a decent enough writer, I had doubts that I could accomplish such a tall order of directives. In the end, I found that I could do it, and I did it rather well, thus giving me the boost I needed to continue to move forward on my dream of obtaining a college degree.

I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
People are always in a haste when they try to express their feelings verbally, however, in the case of writing those feelings, it becomes a challenge. It takes practice and commitment to improve ones writing; with this class I have been able to do so. Through this class, I have learned skills on how to properly express those feelings. In addition, this class was a big transition from high school, however, it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even though I have improved, I still have weaknesses that I would hope to improve on in EN 102. However, overall this course not only improved my writing skills but my social awareness.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
What can I say about what I have learned in English 100? I can’t say that it taught me how to write the perfect essay or that It taught me how to never make a mistake while writing; but what it did do I might say is even better than any of those things. It has refreshed my knowledge of and my ability to write. I always enjoyed writing while I was in high school, but because I was lazy and refused to learn during that period it made retaining what I had learned that much more difficult. Although I feel I’m a good writer I know I still have a lot to learn and this class has made it possible for me to continue in my path to become a better writer and student.
