Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it. As we worked our way through the semester we moved from the Change Project to the Public Argument. I was able to look back at how one essay was developed into multiple essays. The type of paper I was writing determined how I was able to persuade my audience. The audience of the papers changed throughout the semester making the way I developed my paper also changed. In one essay I used the sources to persuade the readers towards agreeing with me. In the other essay I used my own words and thoughts to grab the reader’s attention and have them agree with my point of view on the issue. While one essay was a more formal audience and another was more informal the both required persuasion and attention grabbers. One audience was grasped by the use of facts while the other was grasped by talking about experiences and explaining how the topic related to the audience. While the paper was different each paper required some type of persuasion. The process of writing papers can be very frustrating. You must first get your ideas together. Getting your ideas together can be one of the hardest parts of writing because you could possibly not know what di... ... middle of paper ... ...when just using a website. When using a website you already knew what kind of article you had before reading it. Also many of the sources on the database were quite lengthy which made it harder to get information out of it. Although finding source wasn’t like what I was use to I was able to manage finding the ones I needed to complete the papers required for the class. This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
However, the purpose of an argumentative essay is not to make others agree with a point of view, but to convince them to acknowledge the validity of an argument and to consider it. Luckily, I realized this in time to write my argumentative essay about the value of public opinions, in which I pointed out that although “some may argue that public statements of opinion are unnecessary because they peer pressure others into thinking a certain way,” the sharing of these opinions “[creates] a society where no opinion is exactly like the next” because people adapt what they hear to “better fit their character (Argumentative Impromptu p. 3&4). This change strengthens my arguments because it convinces my audience that I w...
After taking this course, this has been a struggling journey. I did not find fun in this class due to the grade I have now as a result. My writing skills did not improve from high school, losing confidence in myself to create well-written, interesting papers. However, this class has given me ideas about new styles of writing. Having done these papers helped me to discern the qualifications to write a rhetorical analysis essay from a visual critique paper. Here is how my experience in College Writing went.
Time and good ideas will make for a good paper because when I begin writing a paper or an
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
For this evaluation to be completely effective I will take a stance and be completely honest. It has been over ten years since the last time I attended school. Which means I graduated in 2007. When I was in school we did not focus on MLA format what so ever, and even if we did the chances of me are remembering it are very slim. Coming back to school I breezed through my English 101 class and was told that I only need a minor understanding of MLA format. As I sat in on my first day of English 102 I thought to myself how wrong my teacher was. I remember sitting through the lecture thinking I cannot pay attention to this style of teaching. Looking around the class I saw may others who felt the same. At that point, I already wanted to throw in the towel and quit. I
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
Yet, writing problems largely abound and play a huge role in hindering career and educational success. Additionally, even though solutions could easily be applied in order to be able to overcome unproductiveness while writing. Freewriting, or the process of writing without editing, is one of the significantly important solutions into producing better and more creative content in writing. Additionally, brainstorming could also contribute to supply ideas for the writer in order to prevent writer’s block. Moreover, getting to know the audience is another necessity required in creating a powerful paper since it aids in connecting the writer to the reader through the knowledge, needs and views of the audience. Accordingly, adapting to those certain habits such as freewriting and getting to know the audience are significantly important to ease the path while writing. Thus, helping writers into using up more papers for their writings, but chewing less pencils through the process. (Elbow, 2012, p.
Research and Argument are probably two of the most interesting forms of writing and literature to learn about, to me, because I am a person who is critical and a perfectionist. I first realized this when I was peer reviewing and editing a friend’s paper during my freshman year of high school. During this process, I wrote some many notes on their paper that at the end, you could have almost mistaken the paper as a piece of modern art. Arguments, on the other hand, are completely different. Arguments all I need to believe in something are facts and that the argument sounds logical. So, it was interesting to learn about the three main modes of persuasion in this class.
This quarter was one of the most writing intensive of my college career. I had eleven papers to write, and did two presentations. I am at the point in where my writing improvement, is making only slight gains, and that is ok. I am satisfied with the effort that was put forth in this class. I definitely found the class more challenging than composition I. I came into this class, trying to successfully navigate through three research papers and a bibliography.
I still had the typical grammatical errors and sentence fragments, but there were not as many. I could see my writing skills were improving based on me actually taking the instructors corrections and advice into consideration. When I created my revision memo for this essay, I attempted to finally perfect the common mistakes I had made. Making my sentences a little longer
Writing can take place as many different forms and formats, but there are major and minor differences in each piece of writing. The difference between a well-written paper and a poor one is based on several key elements: ideas that are important, organization and word choice, and sentence fluency and conventions. It is essential to ensure that each listed element is executed with utmost efficiency. Combining these elements together and combining them correctly is the key to creating a remarkable piece of writing.
