A Non Governmental Organization that works for human rights issues that interested me is, Amnesty International. I have been hearing many good things about this organization, so I decided to find out for myself what Amnesty International really does for human rights. My mind was blown away at how much they do to further human rights after my research. It is an organization that fights for civilians caught in the crossfire between warring groups, fights for a total ban on torture, and fights against any form of discrimination. First of all, let me start off with what Amnesty International is, and what their mission is. Amnesty International according to it 's website is a non-governmental organization that, "investigate and expose the …show more content…
In the vast majority of wars, civilians are unfortunately caught in the crossfire. What Amnesty International does, according to their website, is to help bring to justice people that go after innocent civilians which breaks the International Human Law (IHL). Amnesty International was able to bring awareness to the human rights violations that was going on in Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, and in Rwanda. In 2012, Amnesty International assisted to bring Thomas Lubanga, the leader of an armed group in Congo to justice, on charges of having children as soldiers in his army (iccnow.org). This work was necessary to show people that if there is a war, it doesn 't indicate that human right 's come to a stop. There will still be human right 's when there is a war, and if someone infringes on that law, they will be brought to justice for committing those …show more content…
Amnesty International helps develop programs that will assist people to stop institutionalized discrimination against a group of people. A great of example of how Amnesty helped stop discrimination against women in Morroco, according to their website, is when they assuaged the Moroccan parliament to change it 's rape law in 2014. This meant rapists cannot escape jail, by forcibly marrying the person they raped (aljazeera.com). These steps to prevent discrimination, needs to be done so that we have a fair world, where no one is dicriminated against for who they are or what they believe
The Peace and Freedom Party was founded on June 23, 1967. This party was created during the 1960’s while the civil rights and antiwar movements occurred. This party’s intentions back then were to get people to work together instead of fighting each other in order to achieve the goal they were pursuing. Today the party has taken on more issues and continues to address them concerning minority groups, women, the environment and so much more. Their public statement says that they believe in socialism, democracy, ecology, racial equality, internationalism and antiwar movements. Also, they want to represent the working and lower class to give them a voice and bring them together. In other words, this party believes that everyone should live as they
There are also amazing things that they are trying to accomplish. Some of the best things that have happened recently are that has been for the animals is they have banned the import and the abuse of dogs in puppy mills (Establishment that breeds puppies, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane), banned the import, sale and the testing of animals in cosmetics in Europe and India, began transferring of 100s of chimps in labs to sanctuaries, stopped the killing of horses for human consumption, and stopped wolf hunting in Wyoming and Michigan. Those are just a few things that they have done. The list of things they are working on is very long too. They are working on protecting sharks from finning (the process of which people kill sharks and take the fins leaving the other parts in the ocean), elephants from ivory poachers (people who illegally hunt, and kill, elephants just for their ivory tusks), and even are saving Rhinos’ from horn trade. They also get companies to help raise awareness like Nestle. Nestle now has adopted amazing reforms for farm animals. The Humane Society even has created a big cat habitat for the tigers that were involved in trades. They are trying to put a stop to all the animal fighting clubs too. The Humane Society has worked so hard to provide more care to animals than any other organization in the world. They have helped, even saved more animals than you could imagine.
The reason is they are impacting globally. I will not deny that coming from a third world country which is the Philippines, has an impact on my decision to pick an international nonprofit organization. Sure enough, my country has benefited from these type of organizations. Save the Children is impacting not just in a small scale, they are making a difference to the world. Moreover, this organization was ranked 26th and rated 4 star among top 100 nonprofit organizations around the world. That alone did not convince me, I dug
Human Activists or Human Rights Defenders are people who, individually or with others, act to promote or protect some variation of a certain Human Right. Throughout history there have been many world famous Human Activists, some have won prizes such as the Nobel Peace Prize, while some have even lost their lives fighting for what they so strongly believe in. Some Human Activists choose to fight for their cause with violence, but many Activists take the non-violence rout to solving their conflict. Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev are two very different Human Activists coming from two very different places, Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa and spent spent 27 years in
Members would do undercover investigations into slaughterhouses or laboratories. It works with celebrities and government officials in campaigns to spread the message and get free media coverage. They pass out flyers and talk with people one-on-one. Some also acts as “field workers,” which means they go to neighborhoods and offer dog houses, toys and neutering/spraying services to (owners of the) dogs that seem neglected. The organization uses many methods to fight for their cause, but haven’t succeeded much in getting laws made.
The most well known of these organizations is the ELF or the Earth Liberation Front. They are a reincarnation of an earlier organization that also used the acronym ELF but the earlier version was the Environmental Life Force and did not advocate the use of unlawful methods. It was the later group that published the field guide for monkeywrenching. They were later plagued by the same problems that follow extremist groups across the spectrum. Savoie noted in ‘If a tree falls’ that because they were so critical of outside people ...
The current century has witnessed immense improvement and re-conceptualization of standards and sovereignty of human rights in Latin America. With the endemic repression and violations of human rights throughout Latin American in the mid to late 20th century, the International human rights regime, an amalgam of international and intergovernmental organizations and bodies, expanded exponentially. By conducting investigations within certain countries, or simply monitoring overt violations of human rights, the international human rights regime stimulated global awareness of violations of human rights in different countries; soon to follow was change in domestic policy in response to international policy. This also led to increased opposition by domestic NGOs against repressive governments or dictatorships largely responsible for human rights violations. Just as well, a number of organizations and groups aided domestic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in their growing efforts to establish judicial practices that better protected human rights. Declarations, conventions, and charters, established a number of values that served as the credo for the organizations that constituted the international human rights regime. Over time, more and more countries were pressured and held accountable for these values, which developed into universal standards for human rights practices. Thus the International Human right regime and the pressure they imposed upon governments ultimately resulted in widespread positive changes in human rights.
In this vast contemporary society, many voices go unheard. Our society struggles to break free from the problems it presents to us. Problems such as the environment, human rights, animal rights, and peace among nations continue to exist. Organizations such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club, and Amnesty are 3 of the biggest associations to help fight and put a cease to the world’s troubles.
One of the key International Organizations that work on behalf of Human right issues is Amnesty International. It is a global nongovernmental organization that is campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. It is independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. The primary mission of the organization is to investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen, lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies, Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law, By telling the powerful stories of the people we
Red Cross, Josea’s feed the hungry and UNICE- what do they all have in common? They are all nonprofit organizations. Throughout the world, but especially in the United States nonprofit organizations are very important and a necessity for many cities. It has become one of the main focuses for a growing amount of majors and studies for many people. With more than 8 million employees and more than 80 million volunteers in the United States alone nonprofit are some of the most important job in recent times (Drucker). The importance of many nonprofit organizations could be the difference between many people’s lives and their deaths. The importance of nonprofit organizations is growing throughout the United States day by day. The fact that nonprofits are built solely on helping the people throughout your community and neighboring communities make nonprofits important based on that fact in itself. Nonprofit provide places to sleep when maybe a family has nowhere to go or somewhere to have a hot meal. Amnesty International is an organization created by British lawyer Peter Benenson in 1961 to protect the rights of humans worldwide. Their campaigning leading to a law
About UNICEF, I expected that it was just responsible for focusing on the needs and rights of the child over the world. In fact, its aim was more than that it was also to promote the equal rights of women and girls and to support their full participation in the political, social, and economic development of their communities. In instance, celebrating annually the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11 to highlight issues concerning the gender inequality facing young girls. In addition, the organization 's extent is much wider than I anticipated. For example:
Amnesty International has done a lot of good deeds that helped people and made a just society to some extent. It has been fulfilling its goal to give everybody their human rights and even though it has been criticized for some problems overall it has been helping rather than hindering. In my personal opinion it has helped a lot more and has looked at more 47,000 documents and cases, which in turn helped the world, at least for the most part. Amnesty International is an organization respected for leading and representing human rights and in my opinion it should still be viewed that way.
"The only thing necessary for the persistence of evil is for enough good people to do nothing." (Peter Benenson). Those words have reflected the reality of our world since the cavemen ages to the present time. If those words had been heeded, Germany wouldn't have advanced past Rhineland to cause World War 2. If those words had been followed, people in places like Burma or North Korea would have the right to express their opinions. If only all human beings followed that simple one sentence, our world would be a more beautiful, peaceful, and joyful place for everyone. However, it is never too late to change the way people listen to those words. Amnesty International, a non-governmental organization formed in 1961 is designated to stop the persistence of evil by helping all citizens in the world gain internationally recognized human rights such as freedom of speech, humane treatment of prisoners, the right to education, and they also make a global report each year to inform the world about human rights issues in each country.
Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization focused on human rights with millions of members and supporters around the world. The objective of the organization is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated. Amnesty International was founded in London in 1961, following the publication of the article "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer 28 May 1961, by the lawyer Peter Benenson. Amnesty draws attention to human rights abuses and campaigns for compliance with international laws and standards. It works to mobilize public opinion to put pressure on governments that let abuse take place.
