Omar Sajjad Global Perspectives Period 6 Mr. Rusnak Amnesty International Research Paper Everyday people are not granted their human rights, whether it is for what they believe in, for doing their job or for what they are. Wrongly punished and forgotten, these people have no one to help them and fight for them. This is where Amnesty International comes and plays a role to give that person his or her human rights that they were deprived from. Amnesty International, an organization, based on the idea that “every person to enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards” (1) fights for human rights, the forgotten prisoners and many other cases. The organization backed with 3 million members in over 150 countries and territories (1) starts petitions and protests to bring justice and human rights to the forgotten and punished. With those points in mind, is Amnesty International really beneficial? Though it helps to some extent it has many flaws going from bias to time and effort consumed for a certain case. Amnesty International started in 1961 when a British lawyer Peter Benenson started a campaign called “Appeal for Amnesty 1961”. This campaign was the beginning of an organization that would fight for human rights and the forgotten. (2) The first campaign that started the organization and the campaigns that are most well known for Amnesty International regard with Prisoners of Conscience. Peter Benenson wrote the first definition of a Prisoner of Conscience and stated that “any person who is physically restrained (by imprisonment or otherwise) from expressing (in any form of words or symbols) any opinion which he honestly holds and which does not advoc... ... middle of paper ... ...s sum of money could have helped many people and could have built infrastructure that would have bettered people’s lives but like a corrupt country went inside peoples pockets. Though they have been heavily criticized for multiple times does Amnesty International help or hinder? Amnesty International has done a lot of good deeds that helped people and made a just society to some extent. It has been fulfilling its goal to give everybody their human rights and even though it has been criticized for some problems overall it has been helping rather than hindering. In my personal opinion it has helped a lot more and has looked at more 47,000 documents and cases, which in turn helped the world, at least for the most part. Amnesty International is an organization respected for leading and representing human rights and in my opinion it should still be viewed that way.
There have been many humanitarians that strive to help countries suffering with human rights abuses. People think that the help from IGOs and NGOs will be enough to stop human rights violations. However, it hasn’t been effective. Every day, more and more human rights violations happen. The problem is escalating.
The Human Rights Watch is an independent organization that is working to defend and protect human right. Our mission statement is to “scrupulously investigate abuses, expose the facts widely, and pressure those with power to respect rights and secure justice. Human Rights Watch is an independent, international organization that works as part of a vibrant movement to uphold human dignity and advance the cause of human rights for all.” (“Human Rights Watch,” 2014).
The current century has witnessed immense improvement and re-conceptualization of standards and sovereignty of human rights in Latin America. With the endemic repression and violations of human rights throughout Latin American in the mid to late 20th century, the International human rights regime, an amalgam of international and intergovernmental organizations and bodies, expanded exponentially. By conducting investigations within certain countries, or simply monitoring overt violations of human rights, the international human rights regime stimulated global awareness of violations of human rights in different countries; soon to follow was change in domestic policy in response to international policy. This also led to increased opposition by domestic NGOs against repressive governments or dictatorships largely responsible for human rights violations. Just as well, a number of organizations and groups aided domestic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in their growing efforts to establish judicial practices that better protected human rights. Declarations, conventions, and charters, established a number of values that served as the credo for the organizations that constituted the international human rights regime. Over time, more and more countries were pressured and held accountable for these values, which developed into universal standards for human rights practices. Thus the International Human right regime and the pressure they imposed upon governments ultimately resulted in widespread positive changes in human rights.
In my opinion, Amnesty International is one of the most effective and dedicated organizations. In the past 36 years, they have been one of lead fights for human rights. It is true that Amnesty International has not succeeded on every case that it has handled, in fact it probably hasn=t succeeded on half of them, but it has succeeded on communicating its message. Amnesty International has made the government aware that they have a fight, the prisoners aware that they have someone on their side, and the public aware that they should take action for human rights.
Have you ever had equal human rights just as much as a person who had more money than you or was in higher power than you? Human Rights is something that everyone should have. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King are some African Americans who are responsible for some of the rights we have today. Human Rights is a right that is believed to belong justifiably to every person. The life expectancy for an average person has increased because of some of the rights that we have today. (Human Rights History)
...ory rights; that have to be followed by all nations or all people, it has been widely accepted. It is important to note that opinions and views on international human rights do indeed vary; there are people for it as well as people against it. The United Nations has openly embraced international human rights and is a primary promoter and source for it. Along with the prominence of international human rights, it has had both positive and negative impacts. A positive impact being that it has motivated organizations to help those in need of rights, such as a right to shelter. While a negative impact has been it has caused a sense of division, between nations because people's views on human rights do differ. Internationally human rights have been a relevant topic of discussion throughout history, at this present time, and will most likely continue to be in the future.
Treaties are the highest source of international law besides jus cogens norms that have binding effect on the parties that ratify them.2 International human rights treaties rely on the “name and shame” mechanisms to pressure states to improve practices.3 However with “toothless” international human rights norms, moral coercion is not always effective. An empirical study conducted by Professor Oona Hathaway assessing the effect of human rights treaty ratification on human rights compliance, maintains in its findings that ratification of human rights treaties has little effect on state practices.4 States do not feel pressured to comply and change their practices, rather, signing treaties is “more likely to offset the pressure rather than augment it.”5 So, is it time to abandon human rights treaties and remit protection of human right to domestic institutions. Hathaway posits elsewhere that despite this treaties “remain an indispensable tool for the promotion of human rights.”6 Instead of getting rid of the treaty system, it is necessary to enhance the monitoring and enforcements mechanism to strengthen the human rights regime to ensure compliance.7 This article evaluates the extent to which international law serves as a useful tool for protection of human rights.
“It’s not happening here, but it’s happening now,” is the caption used by Amnesty International in a recently launched ad campaign to raise awareness in Switzerland. Amnesty International’s purpose is to promoting human rights and fighting injustice through awareness. Maybe because some of these same principles can be found in present day society. The United States prides itself in maintaining these two principles at all costs. In some countries even regarding these principles as fair can cause you to go away for a very long time. The most commonly known to the term “political prisoner” is Gedhun Choekyi Niyami, the eleventh Panchen Lama, as proclaimed by the Dalai Lama in 1995. The record-holding youngest political prisoner is a nine-year-old Chinese boy seized by the Chinese government.
While human rights can be a rather difficult problem to solve overnight or around the world, especially considering what is happening within our own states borders here in the U.S. The promotion of human rights cannot be seen as something unmoral. Goldstein defines universal human rights as, “no matter where a person resides; no matter his or her ethnic or clan traditions, that person has certain rights that must be respected.” As much as I couldn’t agree more with Goldstein’s definition, it is without question that this is not something that is granted to each and every one of us. Universal rights of humans should be the most accepting of “guaranteed” right of any person on this planet
Human Rights are rights every person has simply because they are human. Human rights are universal and un-discriminative. Human Rights have encountered recognition through the United Declaration of Human Rights which was espoused by the United nations general assembly in 1948. Universal human rights have also successfully gained recognition after the creation and establishment of the United Nations.. Both The United Nations and the universal declaration of Human Rights establishments rely on groups or things (governing bodies) such as the media, the international security council and state reporting to help promote and enforce Human Rights internationally. Although these groups are implemented in order to help promote and enforce human rights
Without the UN the world would be a bigger place full of confusion and hatred. The efforts of this world organization have improved global life for all of its citizens and will continue to do so for many years to come.
