Ashley Booker Ms. Jackson Multicultural Literature Research Paper 20 March 2014 The Importance of Non-Profits Red Cross, Josea’s feed the hungry and UNICE- what do they all have in common? They are all nonprofit organizations. Throughout the world, but especially in the United States nonprofit organizations are very important and a necessity for many cities. It has become one of the main focuses for a growing amount of majors and studies for many people. With more than 8 million employees and more than 80 million volunteers in the United States alone nonprofit are some of the most important job in recent times (Drucker). The importance of many nonprofit organizations could be the difference between many people’s lives and their deaths. The importance of nonprofit organizations is growing throughout the United States day by day. The fact that nonprofits are built solely on helping the people throughout your community and neighboring communities make nonprofits important based on that fact in itself. Nonprofit provide places to sleep when maybe a family has nowhere to go or somewhere to have a hot meal. This could be someone in your family, a close friend or even a distant neighbor but in all people are people and help is help so the reasons for nonprofit being important are ongoing. Nonprofits serve multiple roles in improving the quality of life (The Philadelphia Foundation)They are created and put in certain communities for different reasons pertaining to each situation and enhance the environment in that way. Think about it, when you drive through a community with lots of homeless people, what do you automatically think? It’s poor community, right? Well I do, and you never want someone to think poorly of the place you liv... ... middle of paper ... ...like it to. You always have to have the mindset that’s someone else’s day may be going worse than yours and your actions could push that person to be worse than it already is. Have you ever heard the saying “Make every day your best day”? Working with nonprofits organizations that should be your motto every day you step foot on the job. Throughout your life most of your current jobs open up better opportunities for your work experience. Nonprofit organizations also play a role within a region that is valuable in building the long-lasting ties that allow employers to attract and retain a skilled workforce. (Malholtra) You’re not only thinking about making and providing a better life for others, think to provide a better life for yourself and through that help for others will come. Nonprofits also provide essential services and cultural and recreational opportunities.
Nonprofit and voluntary type organizations play a major and integral role in American society. Each group exists today because they were established with the desire to help those in need by providing products, good and services. In the article “Toward Nonprofit Reform in Voluntary Spirit: Lessons From the Internet”, the authors stated the that nonprofit and the voluntary sector can include professional, the paid nonprofit, and grassroots organizations (Brainard & Siplon, 2004, p. 435). Even though these organizations may have the same or similar structures, I will compare and contrast the economic and political difference and similarity between the two.
The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater expectation of its role in society is causing executives to look to more scientific methods of management.
Whether it be mentoring, helping the homeless, giving blood, holding a charity event or helping support those in need. No matter what the type of work you do is, it matters as long as it helps the community become a better place. The act of kindness that you perform today can save a life tomorrow. Every person isn’t born with ethical thoughts, or thoughts at all but they learn them as they grow. For example, if you see your parents or someone that you admire do good things such as giving back, and help people who need it or just doing right by the religion that they follow, then there is a split chance, that you will follow in those same exact footsteps and fill them just as well as you were taught. Not saying you have to go out of your way to give money to help someone pay for groceries and do things for the less fortunate, but put yourself in their shoes. What would life be like from the other side? Could you still have everything you have now? Everybody can’t be financially stable all the time and you never know when the tables could turn and you can be in their place. It doesn 't take much time to make a difference in your community or any community rather. Give what you can and be that change you want to see in others. We have to learn to work together, rather than despising one another or not getting along with each other for no reason logical. “Two minds are greater than one”. If we stop working against each other and start
The reason is they are impacting globally. I will not deny that coming from a third world country which is the Philippines, has an impact on my decision to pick an international nonprofit organization. Sure enough, my country has benefited from these type of organizations. Save the Children is impacting not just in a small scale, they are making a difference to the world. Moreover, this organization was ranked 26th and rated 4 star among top 100 nonprofit organizations around the world. That alone did not convince me, I dug
Subsidy will complicate their execution of services. It’s simple, without funding, programs are not able to exist and hiring employees is out of the question. Although they have overcame many hurtles to become what they are today, they still have much to work on. Finding hardworking and dedicated people is not much of a concern in this field because if people didn’t have a heart to wanting to improve the betterment of all people through service, they would not be working countless hours with a less than gracious pay. Volunteers are another concern to the effectiveness and efficiency of the nonprofit. Volunteers act as the glue to the program. They work solely with the mindset of helping others at their own expense. Would a volunteer necessarily feel that way about it, probably not, but regardless of why, the end goal is to assist those in need in order to get he or she improved
For a long time the ways that non-profit organizations raise money was the same. They used solicitation letters as a way to reach out and engage new audiences to financially support their organizations. Then with the rise of the internet, they were able to use mass emails. Now there is an even newer form of technology that allows organizations to fundraise and gain new audiences. This new medium is social media. Stone brings up some good points about using social media to fundraise. He quotes Stannard-Stockton, chief executive of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors, as saying, “It’s pretty well documented that social media is by no means an easy way to raise money, but it is a rather fantastic way to build a network of supporters.” Using a few other articles this paper will explore how nonprofits need to properly use social media and how it can help their organizations in return.
The role of business in society has been one of the major topics of discussion over the past few decades. People often have a pre-conceived notion about business that their sole purpose is to generate profit, but there are non-profit organizations that are socially responsible and works for the betterment of the society. A business can be defined as a commercial activity performed by organizations while non-profit entities also engage in business activities for several social and economic causes. Businesses can range from individually owned companies, small/medium sized enterprises to multinational organizations (Investopedia, 2009). In hindsight to the early developments of business, a simultaneous progress is evident in the human society and civilization. During the early days, people engaged in exchange of goods and services between one another which is also called as the barter system. There is also plenty of evidence suggesting that trade was done among different ancient civilizations such as India, China and Egypt (Kumar, 2012). As a result, so many barriers between countries were eliminated and helped to create a strong business relationship between one another. Since then, business evolved into a much organized and advanced entity that has been influencing the society in a radical way. It is important to analyse the different aspects of business and its purpose in the society. Ethics in business, corporate social responsibility, impact of globalization in society and the overall objective of business in society will be discussed further in the essay.
As stated above, there are various actors in the international community. These actors include intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations who help shape the foundation and creation of human rights. IGOs and NGOs listen to the international community to monitor and protect their human rights. According to the textbook, nongovernmental organization have been especially vocal and effective in the international system when it comes to human rights. NGOs groups that have a great impact on human rights through specific groups like Amnesty International, and the Human Rights Watch. IGOs and NGOs make the public aware of human rights issues, put pressure on good and bad states to confront issues, and lobby international organizations. As stated
When we think of a nonprofit and for profit healthcare organizations what typically will come to mind, is that the big difference between the two is unlike for profits, a nonprofit will have more access to large public tax subsidies, are prohibited from distributing profits to owners or other controlling persons of the organization, and are exempt from taxes on corporate and donations (Pan, 2013, p. 675). Nonprofit hospitals were established by various charities, and they typically accept everyone who comes through their doors regardless of their ability to pay for their services. A nonprofit receives a tax exemption, and usually a nonprofit hospital especially in large urban cities, may be busier at any given time than a for profit hospitals. A nonprofit hospital is governed by the communities they serve.
Other types of non-profit organizations founded by individuals such as foundations should exist and should be allowed to operate without the burden of taxes. Whatever the motives of their owners were to found them in the first place, they should not get in the way of the much greater possibilities these foundations offer when it comes to helping society in numerous ways. Together with governments’ efforts to increase the average living standard, and companies’ effort when it comes to reducing pollution, we are on a good path of preserving our planet and securing a safer future for the future generations.
In modern society, we often hear some news about social enterprises, TV, magazine, and internet. We cannot neglect the function of social enterprises in our country. Social enterprises play a vital role in perspectives of helping homeless people, offering employable opportunity, increasing national income, promoting economic growth. While, controversy follows. However, positive appraisal is more than the negative one. People still hope to see more social enterprises appearance.
Nonprofit educational institutions compete for resources and market share like any other entity. “The same competition for resources, customers, fund balances (profits) and endowments exist, and higher education is facing the same demands from its customers, students and parents, as well as from its revenue sources… alumni…” More broadly, both for profit and nonprofit firms act to create value. Harvard College, like its competitors in the Ivy League, is a private, nonprofit institution. Harvard creates value by accomplishing its mission, to educate “citizens and citizen-leaders for our society.” While for profits and nonprofits compete differently, qualitative criteria such as reputation and trust
Although the article had numerous facts throughout, I wanted to share these next three. First, I learned that for an organization to be considered a nonprofit they must be “primarily engaged in the promotion of social welfare”. Another fact from this article is Lois Lerner, a director in the I.R.S.,

Philanthropy is powerful because everyone can be affected by the love for mankind, this can change the world for better. Philanthropy is not the practice of self importance and putting yourself above others. Philanthropy and its power of changing the world is about donating to charity your time, belongings, or even sharing kind words or advice in an effort to better others. It is about giving to others less fortunate, and caring about other humans. Whether you know them or not, helping others and caring for the welfare of those less fortunate can change the world. One person can change the life of someone else's by one simple act of charity or kindness. Bill Gates is a wonderful example, due to his material advantages, he can give his belongings to others to help them, rather than keeping all his success to himself. Over his lifetime Mr. Gates donated $27
