Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. The list of animals that the Humane Society helps is very long, because they don’t just help the household pets that you might have thought. The conditions of the Humane Society change due to the types of animals …show more content…
There are also amazing things that they are trying to accomplish. Some of the best things that have happened recently are that has been for the animals is they have banned the import and the abuse of dogs in puppy mills (Establishment that breeds puppies, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane), banned the import, sale and the testing of animals in cosmetics in Europe and India, began transferring of 100s of chimps in labs to sanctuaries, stopped the killing of horses for human consumption, and stopped wolf hunting in Wyoming and Michigan. Those are just a few things that they have done. The list of things they are working on is very long too. They are working on protecting sharks from finning (the process of which people kill sharks and take the fins leaving the other parts in the ocean), elephants from ivory poachers (people who illegally hunt, and kill, elephants just for their ivory tusks), and even are saving Rhinos’ from horn trade. They also get companies to help raise awareness like Nestle. Nestle now has adopted amazing reforms for farm animals. The Humane Society even has created a big cat habitat for the tigers that were involved in trades. They are trying to put a stop to all the animal fighting clubs too. The Humane Society has worked so hard to provide more care to animals than any other organization in the world. They have helped, even saved more animals than you could imagine.

711 million people a year sponsor the act of kidnapping, torture, and starvation around the world. If you’ve ever been to a zoo, aquarium or a Seaworld park, you’re one of those 711 million people. Lately, controversy has struck the world over the treatment of animals in those types of facilities. There are many good rehabilitation centers in zoos worldwide that help injured, endangered or ill animals, which is why a lot of people do support them. However, there is a darker side to these parks and facilities. These animals cruel pasts and hidden lives will never be heard unless we help. Help them escape their tortured lives, and see their families they were ripped from when they were only babies. Be the voice of the voiceless and shut down
Animal welfare is based on the humane care and use of the animals. Organizations that support animal welfare seek to improve the treatment of animals. The first rule on humane care was established by the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association in 1947. Seven years before the Humane Society was established. The a...
Capital Area Humane Society helps people, so why can’t you help them? Every week they serve dogs, cats, bunnies, and sometimes more. Although dogs usually stay only 4 days, and cats only 11, CAHS does its best to help every one of them while they are there (www.cahs-pets.org). But CAHS needs your help. Come to the Capitol Area Humane Society and help out all the dogs, cats, and bunnies by donating or volunteering.

Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. The 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered, while 78 percent of dogs and 88 percent of cats are not spayed or neutered, in 2009 Statistics from animal shelters in 55 counties in WV (West Virginia) shows that nearly 54% of all animals entering shelters are euthanized, The euthanasia rates ranged from the lowest at 5% to the highe...
What is a Humane Society? A Humane Society is a group that aims to stop animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. It’s an organization that promotes the compassionate treatment of animals. We are doing a school project to stop animal cruelty for once and for all! We are getting our information from the Humane Society of Greater Miami. We are asking these five questions: the purpose of the Humane Society, there history, there funding sources, its challenges, and what children can do to help. So, help us so we can succeed and help stop animal cruelty.
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
Animals are constantly being neglected because people do not believe they could ever be equals and that they have to assert their dominance by physical or mentally abusing that animal. They are being poisoned, drugged, malnourished, burned, mutilated and all kinds of all abuse techniques that should send them to jail for the next ten years. ”Of 1,880 cruelty cases* reported in the media in 2007: 64.5% (1,212) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats and 25% (470) involved other animals” (Humane Society).
...stigation of inspectors’ findings regarding alleged violations of federal animal welfare laws and the initiation of follow-up enforcement actions and fees for licensing from animal dealers and handlers (Corwan, 2013). There are numerous non-for profit organizations both faiths based and non-sectarian that support animal welfare. For instance, The ASPCA is the nation’s second-largest animal welfare grant maker, providing support to U.S.-based nonprofit animal welfare organizations through cash grants, sponsorships, executive and technical assistance, and training (ASPCA, n.d.). They are largely funded by private organizations and also donations. Additional funding for APHIS in accordance with the AWA comes from fines issued for not meeting proper regulations standards. Whether an animal welfare law will be effective often counts on whether it gets adequately funded.
For the final project Kat, Victoria and I went to the local humane society and volunteered. The Humane Society of Catawba County is a place for animals who have been abandoned or mistreated by their owners to go. Anyone can go and adopt the animals and bring them home to a good loving family. The humane society is a big building with a lot of animals for everyone to adopt. With all these animals there has to be people who work/volunteer behind the scenes. The humane society is a non-profit organization who is always looking for people to come in, help and volunteer for them. This is where we came in play, we contacted the humane society hoping they could use some help taking care of the animals. We contacted Emily the volunteer coordinator
As you know, the Houston SPCA is one of largest animal cruelty and rescue organizations in the country with the ability to care for the broadest range of animal species, types of abuse and injury, and magnitude of large-scale, multiple-animal cases. We are also the only shelter in the area that is equipped and knowledgeable about the care of large animals (especially horses) and exotic animals. Just last week, we rescued 88 miniature horses and ponies, one donkey and two cows from a property near Baytown. Many were suffering from malnutrition,
In the past, the rights of humans have been through many up and downs, but the rights of animals have been ignored. Every year in the United States, about 1.5 million sheltered animals are euthanized. Just because an animal is left in the shelter waiting for families to adopt, it does not mean its rights can just be ignored. It is understandable that shelters euthanize animals, because space and resources are limited; but perhaps a better solution can be created due to the problems. Shelters will not and cannot be the only solution, which means more and alternative programs must be developed. Programs such as lost and found for pets, lower priced pet identification programs, and classes to help owners understand their pets better. Those programs are some examples that will reduce the number of animals that are taken into the shelters, and lower the price americans are wasting on killing innocent animals. The reason more and more animals have been taken into shelters, is because their owners, breeders, and sellers have been abandoning them. The awareness of abandonment of animals need be raised, and the voice of animals need to be heard. The cruelty of killing animals can be stopped, but effort must be made by
A restored awareness surrounding the psychology and welfare of animals has generated a significant amount of social change in the last few decades. Many view the animal-welfare movement as a separate entity from social change; however, the two are interconnected because the animal-welfare movement seeks to change society’s perception and treatment of animals. The movement has been a slow march toward broad awareness because various organizations and individuals view animal-welfare differently. For policymakers, it is often necessary to view animal-welfare through the lens of other social causes that involve human needs, which are usually of greater concern than animal needs, rather than as its own altruistic cause. This mentality is one of the many issues
"Animal rights - moral or legal entitlements attributed to nonhuman animals, usually because of the complexity of their cognitive, emotional, and social lives or their capacity to experience physical or emotional pain or pleasure." (Britannia encyclopedia online, n.d.). The definition of animal rights is so clear to us. Human rights need to be protected, so do animal rights. In 1976, in New York City, thousands of cat lovers were beaten when they heard a painful test to be taken for pets’ sexual behavior. Henry Spira, the leader of animal rights movement, helped to mobilize a protest and marked the beginning of the contemporary animal rights movement. The group took dramatic and public action to express their concerns and anger. They were eager in their language, tactics, and methods of appealing new recruits to the cause of animal rights approach (Jasper & Nelkin, 1992, p. 26). This essay will discuss how people deal with animals and what animal rights people should respect and protect.
