For the final project Kat, Victoria and I went to the local humane society and volunteered. The Humane Society of Catawba County is a place for animals who have been abandoned or mistreated by their owners to go. Anyone can go and adopt the animals and bring them home to a good loving family. The humane society is a big building with a lot of animals for everyone to adopt. With all these animals there has to be people who work/volunteer behind the scenes. The humane society is a non-profit organization who is always looking for people to come in, help and volunteer for them. This is where we came in play, we contacted the humane society hoping they could use some help taking care of the animals. We contacted Emily the volunteer coordinator …show more content…
From all the money that is made 3% goes the the staff, 19% goes to fundraising, and 78% goes to animal protection services (You love helping animals. So do we.). From all of that, 75% of their income comes from contributions and grants, 13% from bequests, 10% investments and other assets, and then the last 2% is revenue from investments and miscellaneous income (You love helping animals. So do we.). Their target population is the animals in need, and their mission that they have set out to for is, “In the U.S. and around the world, The HSUS is leading the way to a better future for all animals. Get to know our work.”. (You love helping animals. So do we.) The humane society does a great job at what they do, when I was there I saw that they where taking care of all the animals that they have taken in. All that was done with high standards and everything was relatively clean for the number of animals that they have at any given point of …show more content…
On my first visit they just had us do laundry and clean the dog bowls when they were done with them. To was the bows in a sanitary way, first they had us fill up three sinks. The first one was warm soapy water, after we washed them in there, we move them to the sink with bleach water and let them soak. Next we put them in the sink with just fresh water and dried them. When we did laundry they had specific ways that they wanted the blankets and towels folded, when we were all done with that we were able to play with the dogs for a little and give them attention. On the second trip it was the same thing washing dishes, doing laundry, and also cleaning the cages. To clean the cages, we had to scoop up all of the poop then go over the cages with the mop. We did this for all the do cages and as always after we were done with all that we got to play with the dogs. Then on the third day same thing dishes, laundry, clean cages, and then play with the
Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. Although Faye thinks her job is stressful, she thinks it’s easy because she enjoys doing her job and helping animals find a home.
There are also amazing things that they are trying to accomplish. Some of the best things that have happened recently are that has been for the animals is they have banned the import and the abuse of dogs in puppy mills (Establishment that breeds puppies, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane), banned the import, sale and the testing of animals in cosmetics in Europe and India, began transferring of 100s of chimps in labs to sanctuaries, stopped the killing of horses for human consumption, and stopped wolf hunting in Wyoming and Michigan. Those are just a few things that they have done. The list of things they are working on is very long too. They are working on protecting sharks from finning (the process of which people kill sharks and take the fins leaving the other parts in the ocean), elephants from ivory poachers (people who illegally hunt, and kill, elephants just for their ivory tusks), and even are saving Rhinos’ from horn trade. They also get companies to help raise awareness like Nestle. Nestle now has adopted amazing reforms for farm animals. The Humane Society even has created a big cat habitat for the tigers that were involved in trades. They are trying to put a stop to all the animal fighting clubs too. The Humane Society has worked so hard to provide more care to animals than any other organization in the world. They have helped, even saved more animals than you could imagine.
Animal welfare is based on the humane care and use of the animals. Organizations that support animal welfare seek to improve the treatment of animals. The first rule on humane care was established by the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association in 1947. Seven years before the Humane Society was established. The a...
Founded in 1866, by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America, and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect by all humans, and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years dogs were used to pull carts and work treadmills simply because men couldn't afford horses, but thanks to Henry's diligent efforts, he helped get a law passed prohibiting dogs to work in such environments. The first animal hospital opened in 1912, starting the course for others to follow. Since the ASPCA is privately funded, and a not for profit organization, their supporters reach well over 2 million people. That is very impressive! There are three key factors that keep the ASPCA thriving. They are: the protection for pet parents and pets,
I finally got exposure to the low-income families with my grandfather. My grandfather is the person who got me involved in the Habitat work. He is a retired construction teacher and he has taught me many carpentry and handyman skills. I have done a Blitz Build before and I enjoyed it very much. I love doing that type of work and it is even more fun when I get to help out a family with my skills. At Clemson I got to practice these skills once again when my English class helped work on a Habitat house. Now we are assisting the actual Habitat organization by making a promotional brochure. I think that all students should get involved with an organization such as Habitat for Humanity. Doing this will bring them to a closer understanding of what it is like to live in a low income or even homeless family.
For our project, Maddie, Payal, Shraddha, and I decided to volunteer with a group called Angel Arms located in Latrobe. Angel Arms is an organization that takes care and helps rehabilitate babies who were born addicted to drugs. At first, we assumed we would be working with their snuggler program which would have allowed us to hold and comfort these babies. However, with the opioid epidemic on the rise, a place was needed for their work to continue. Although a long way out, Angel Arms is restoring an old abandoned Victorian house to turn it a rehabilitation place for these babies. They just started the project a month back so our service project was doing a lot of moving of old furniture out of the house. We helped them organize what could
The humane society is a nonprofit organization, which is a corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. The humane society is also a 501c, a nonprofit American tax-exempt organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to decrease suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act passed in 1958, this would change the lives of millions of animals around America. The Humane Society began investigating animal experimentation around the 1950s to gather evidence on animal neglect or suffering. Myers said,” every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” In 1961 HSUS investigated dog dealers in the U.S. to gain support for a law to be passed that would prevent cruelty to animals in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966 life magazine published an essay about dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their congressional representatives and demanded action to protect animals and stop pet theft. Later that year the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humane law passed since world war II. Other goals they had during this time were: reduce homeless dogs and cats, reform inhumane euthanasia practices, redact abuses by pet stores and pet breeding trades, and help wildlife and marine life. The head of the humane society organization are the board of directors, which has about 15 members who are all volunteers. Then there is the executive board ...
I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. Hunger is probably the easiest social problem that can be solved in America due to the excessive amount of food wasted every year. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and watched things that were discussed in class come to
My process for writing this project was very trial and error. I began to write stories, would read them, and out of the stories that I liked the most, I tried to adjust them to make them
For my persuasive paper I will research the humane society. Humane Society is a charity that cares for abandoned and abused animals. The charity takes care of animals that local shelters are unable to care due lack of resources. This charity also tries to stop animal abuse by making petitions to stop puppy mills, bring attention to wild trade and report pit bull fighting. I have chosen this charity because I had previous experience with this organization. This charity help me save a puppy that I found on the streets last year. Due to the integrity and dedication that this organization had at that one time, it persuades me to pick this charity to be the focus in my paper.
What is a Humane Society? A Humane Society is a group that aims to stop animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. It’s an organization that promotes the compassionate treatment of animals. We are doing a school project to stop animal cruelty for once and for all! We are getting our information from the Humane Society of Greater Miami. We are asking these five questions: the purpose of the Humane Society, there history, there funding sources, its challenges, and what children can do to help. So, help us so we can succeed and help stop animal cruelty.
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
There is a Pedigree dog commercial I see on television which catches my eye and my heart. It tells us to not pity a shelter animal. When I decided to become a Veterinary Technician, I anticipated working in a vet office. Unpredictably, I changed my mind. Approximately a year ago, I began volunteering for the Denver Dumb Friends League at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. A shelter is not always the easiest place to work. Nevertheless, I feel it is where I feel most able to make a difference. There is plenty of heartache, but I seem to have a knack for calming and comforting the frightened animals, and that makes me feel good. My volunteer role involves helping with surgery, giving animals their medicine and processing incoming animals. In addition, I help with Humane Education, which includes speaking with groups about animal care. There are tremendous pros and cons to working in a shelter. In the following paragraphs, I will evaluate the shelter setting to decide if this is where I will be most fulfilled. One aspect I enjoy about a shelter is the changing atmosphere. Each visit brings a novel experience. On occasion, exotic breeds of animals arrive, such as the time animal control brought in a wolf/dog hybrid. These hybrids are illegal to own, but we processed him, so he could be taken to a sanctuary. Other times, I witness kittens born and experience the amazing scene of a mother and her babies. My favorite experience is when a lost animal has a microchip because we can reunite them with their family. A recent highlight is the story of a family who moved here from Idaho and lost their cat. It was brought to the Buddy Center, and we discovered a microchip. We contacted the family, and they were ecstatic. The cat had been missing f...
Many dirty dogs come into the shelters, washing them helps them get homes quicker. They also need baths to stay healthy. Many need their toenails trimmed, or their ears cleaned. If they do not have routine nail trimmings the quick will become very large and it is hard to trim nails. They will start to curl and cut the paw pads causing discomfort and sometimes results in the nail getting imbedded in the pads. Also, baths help check for fleas and ticks or any hot spots. Cleaning them will help with mats, and tangles. If, the mat gets too close to the skin it causes irritation. Brushing teeth is also a procedure they need when grooming. Many small dogs have teeth that are too close together and collect tartar.
Did you know zoos raised about 16 billion dollars to support animals(Zoo Statistics)?Zoos improved in many ways and are helping a lot of animals. Zoos help with endangered animals, zoos try their hardest to care for the animals, and zoos try to make animals feel like they are at home.Zoos do not keep animals captive but help them.
