As a business marketing major, by taking oral communications, I knew it would help boost my resume and increase my chances for success in the future. Although, coming into this class I was extremely hesitant about giving a speech in front of a college class. “What happens if I stumble? What do I do if I forget my speech? I had to inform my audience without persuading or convincing them that something is “good” or “bad.” It came time for my informative speech. This time my nerves were at a seven instead of an eight, feeling more relaxed and confident. Being educated about useful strategies like repetition, transitions, and signposts, helped make me feel more confident about the contexts of my speech. In addition, I felt my informative speech was more organized than my previous speeches. When it came down to presentation day, I knew I had written a well put together speech, but the question was, could I speak it as well as it was written? Afterwards, I felt a little uneasy because I relied upon my index cards too much. I was anxious to get my comments back to see if I had made at least one improvement. Again, I felt satisfied, but knew that wasn’t good enough, yet I was still enthusiastic to see that my hard work was paying off. “Take out a bit of content to help your time out a bit,” was something easy I improved on for my next speech. Over these last few months I never thought I would grow this much as a speaker, with my nerves, confidence, and content. Things like nonverbal communication like solid eye contact, appearance, and gestures are all important necessities that I had learned prior to this class, but I learned material like the seven parts of the communication process, for example encoding and decoding, are often thought about before a presentation. Taking this Oral Communications class will be professionally rewarding in my future as a Business Marketing, Management major. This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. During the next semester, my goal is to improve my skills as an oral communicator. In the past, when I give presentations, or even talk during a socratic seminar (surprising right? yes, one point in my school career, I did talk during a seminar), I am a bag of nervousness. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
Without practice, we lose confidence in ourselves, which prevents us from pushing forward. Therefore, this quote affirms that a speaker isn’t born, they are made. This course has helped me improve my confidence in public speaking, helped me create a proper outline in order to create a well written speech, and informed me about the different types of speeches such as the informative and persuasive speech. I enjoyed the vocabulary assignments and it really has improved the way I write and speak. I also feel that because we had multiple speeches throughout the term, I was able to practice writing different outlines for different kinds of speeches.
Basic Counseling Methods (taught by Regina Green and Aaron Welch) was one of my most memorable classes for helping me to develop communication skills. This class detailed the framework for creating open communication which involved open questions, reflection, summary, and the importance of reading body language. This in addition with Advanced Counseling Methods involved role playing with these communication techniques in different scenarios. While these were initially intimidating, practicing what was just learned help to cement these essential concepts into my learning. Oral Communication also helped me to overcome my fear of public speaking. Dr. Williams also made the experience lighthearted and helped me to not take myself so seriously. He also emphasized the importance of memorizing an outline rather than a manuscript. Professor Walton was also fond of breaking up his classes into small groups for discussion. While this was already a strong area for me in communication, it helped me to grow into the role of a leader in this position more by asking questions of others rather than knowing all the answers and telling others what to think.
The class helped me learn how to overcome fear of public speaking which was brought about by anxiety and fear which was mainly contributed by lack of exposure. Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve.

In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
Now the communication class is almost over I have realize how important is to have good communication skills, and how it is key to life.
