Throughout my high school career I have been involved in several different activities, from track team, student government, office assistant at Alliance Academy middle School to an after-school program called BUILD (Business United Investenting Lending Development) and it is a program that has had the most influence on my high school self that has helped me grow as a student and as a leader. It is a college access program aimed at under-resourced high school students that offers an opportunity to develop a product, raise funding, manufacture anf sell a product in order to learn the skills of an entrepeneur. As a member of BUILD I was able to attend college tours, receive academic support throughout my four years of high school. BUILD provides …show more content…
me with a lot of academic support while also providing us with a space to do school work before we got down to business. I attend BUILD at least once a week and sometimes more depending on my need for a quiet place to work and get help. BUILD didn’t only offer a chance to create my own business and get academic support but they also provided us with mentors and gave us a chance to explore colleges to get a head start on college decisions. Build gave me the opportunity to manage my time wisely knowing that If I paced myself and stayed organized I would have the chance to finish my work and get it revised leaving me with plenty of time to absorb the material I learned. My assigned mentor at BUILD is a great source of inspiration who keeps me motivated to work to my potential. Not only would my mentors help us understand how to develop a product they also could give us experiences outside of our normal life. In my sophomore year I really got excited about giving back to my middle school. So that when I decided that whenever time allowed I would go to my middle school and help out and give back to the place that had set me up to be successful in high school. I began to help out in the office answering phone calls, making phone calls home and be a translator for the office staff when they needed help to speak with parents, as well as cleaning the office whenever necessary, I basically made myself available to accomplish wherever help was needed. I volunteer to help out just because I loved the pleasure of knowing I love to give back especially after receiving so much from the community and the school. My junior year I joined a program called Decisiones where we my volunteer hours are spent working at an event and the money earned would go directly to the organization to help raise money to get youth out of difficult situations.
In this program we would go to the Levis Stadium or San Jose Stadium and work as a cashier or prep at soccer games and concerts. Once we arrived at the designated events we had to be very efficient and reliable and keep track of all the tasks that had to be accomplished, everything that needed to be counted and prepared before the start of the event. I enjoy being trusted with such great responsibilities and conscious that our work mattered and that the best we accomplished our jobs the better the experience for the customers who attended these events. I had to work at a steady pace so that the clients wouldnt complain and that way we could also keep our stand nice and clean. Once the event was done we all had to help each other out to clean so that way we could get out faster. Joining Decisiones made me realize that if volunteer experiences are as important as working for pay. I learned to be responsible because the way I accomplish my task has a direct impact on the experience of others and
myself.
Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities including: National Honor Society, student council, National Council on Youth Leadership, student ambassador, drama club, yearbook, and chamber choir. It is throughout these activities that I have felt myself grow as a person and have found many opportunities to shine as a leader. The Burger King scholarship is an amazing opportunity and an extremely generous foundation. It is with the help of this foundation that allows for people to make their dreams come true. I am grateful to of been chosen as a Burger King Scholar and will use the scholarship to make a difference.
In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
A big part of nursing is reflection. Now that my sophomore year is nearly over, I can see how much I have grown and how much knowledge I received. Throughout this semester I have been faced with many thrilling experiences and frightening experiences. I have learned a lot through my gerontology clinical, pharmacology and fundamentals courses. Now that I am in clinical it seems that everything is coming together. Practicing in fundamentals and then practice on a real person has been very beneficial. Once I have performed a skill and tested out I’ve notice I am likely to remember how to do the skill again in practice. In this paper I am going to review some of the main objectives I felt were beneficial to me and will always be an important part of nursing practice.
One thing that people often overlook when writing an essay is not what the college can do for you, but what you can do for the college. With that in mind the attributes that I possess would make a great addition to and benefit the college greatly. My ability to speak in front of large crowds, lead, and my thirst for knowledge have sshasfdafy
Growing is always hard. Things become more challenging and you are left with a bundle of responsibilities. High school made me change to be ready for encounters with other people and for when I go to college in the future.
Two words: public school. This brief statement was the response I gave when asked what the greatest social and psychological experience of modern time was. Public school is probably the most hair brained and barbaric concept ever put forth. In my experience, you take a group of around one hundred and twenty kids stemming from different backgrounds, social classes, races, political beliefs, and sexual orientations, lock them in a classroom with adults who grew up in completely different generations and then you ask them to learn together. That has to be the most unbelievable and wacked out concept man has ever created, and yet, it works beautifully.
Another semester has come and gone and I am a few steps closer to the goal I set for myself back in the spring of 2012. A degree! In a few scant months I will be at the halfway point earning my Associate of Arts degree and a couple years from now, hopefully, I will be stepping onto the stage up in Flagstaff and accepting my Bachelor’s degree.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
Going back to school at 30 is not the same as going back to school at 20, especially when you’re a single parent with an established career. Returning to school never left my mind throughout the years, I received my associates seven years ago and between then and now a lot had changed. So many questions I asked myself; do I have the time, who can help watch my daughter, can I juggle another load, etc. I answered every one of my questions; unfortunately I gave myself excuses instead. The decision going back to school was overwhelming because it was taking up another full time job; making it a priority and possibly putting in overtime to study and do homework.
IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. An IEP is a written document required for each child who is eligible to receive special education services. It is provided to a student who has been determined first to have a disability, and second, to need special education services because of that disability. An IEP is very important and should never be overlooked by anyone. The purpose of an IEP is to make sure that only students whose educational performance is affected by a disability receive special services. An individual program plan is designed to make sure that students get the kind of educational experience that they deserve; an experience that results in success. The end goals for students who are on an IEP are to be involved in
1. I encountered the most significant challenge when I moved to Canada in January, 2012. Before I came to Canada, my English grade was very good in China, thus, I thought living and studying in Canada would not be too difficult. However, I did not do well in the ESL evaluation at all, and I was placed in ESL 1 at my high school. Most of my classmates there spoke very little English, and they did not spend much time and effort on studying English. It was very difficult for me to study if I wanted to be their friends and at that time, they were the only friends I had in Canada. However, I expected much more effort from myself. I studied very hard and became the 2nd fastest ESL students ever to complete ESL 1 to 4 in my high school. Today, when I recall what I have accomplished, I think I learnt to trust myself and at the same, success in anything only comes from hard work.
As a first year student, college is an excellent opportunity to discover one’s own sense of identity and interact with a diverse range of people. Unfortunately, everyone will experience moments of confusion, loneliness, or even disengagement during their college years, which may cause a lack of interest for campus involvement. Through many studies, there are several theories that determine the parallelism between a student’s growth and their involvement interest, which also provides helpful methods for first year students to overcome challenges during this time. As Luckyday mentors this gives us insight to how to carefully approach different situations from mentees while forming a lasting impact on their transition from high school to college.
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
In America everyone has the right to a free public education. States set standards for schools in an attempt at ensuring all students get the same quality education. No matter how many standards are set, students will not have equal schooling. Schooling is larger then the lessons taught in the classroom. Each student’s school experience is different, not only because of the quality of their education but because of things like school location, demographic, teachers, participation, and other person experiences. My school experience has helped define me as a person and has helped guide me through life.
